With the Winter season rolling around, it can only mean one thing: Cheap cruises! The $99 special for our inside room (plus port fees and gratuity of course) was too good to pass up. So that is how Chris and I found ourselves making the 10 1/2 hour drive to Miami after eating Turkey on Thanksgiving evening. The Itinerary Friday Evening - Depart Miami Saturday - 8AM - 5PM - Nassau Sunday - 8AM - 5PM - Great Stirrup Cay (Norwegian's Private Island) Monday - 7AM - Back at Miami. This was my 4th cruise, and Chris's 5th. I was new to Nowegian, so I was a bit curious about how they planned to set themselves apart from Carnival and Royal Caribbean with their freestyle concept. In a nutshell, my evaluation is that I still prefer ... read more

Our first stop on our 14 day repositioning cruise in the Caribbean was Nassau, Bahamas. Unfortunately, Steph, Nicole, and I had to finish our Basic Safety course, as it was too cold in the waters of Canada to complete the last element of the course - jumping off the ship, flipping a liferaft, and climbing into it. This is what we did in Nassau. Luckily, because we went first, we got the chance to get off the ship and explore a bit of Nassau. We only had about an hour, but we walked through town to a nearby beach, where we saw Jimy and Humberto. We hung out there for a little while before heading back to the ship. Nassau is actually one of the places that we’ll be visiting on a weekly basis, during our ... read more

Its been a while since the last blog and this will bring you up to date and will probably be the last for this journey !! The sea day we had after Ocho Rios was pleasant but very busy.Gretchen had heaps mapped out for us and we were on the go with trivia competitions, tour of the ships galley, tour of the theatre stage and green room, lunch, ballroom dancing, more trivia and finally a dinner with our new found friends from the trivia comps!!We finally got the suitcases packed and outside the cabin at midnight for a dawn arrival into Florida. It had been a great trip and we are now really confirmed cruisers. It just suits us and you meet so many interesting people. We were transferred to Miami airport with ease although we had a long wait at the ... read more

"Dedicated to the Living Memory of Moira Penzes, She will always allow the donkey to bathe the sparrow gently" I woke up today and took a big dookie. Whiskey here seems to be the brown bottom flu and can wreak hell upon the anus the next day. As I sat on the porcelain throne praying to all my relatives past, I looked through the keyhole of the bathroom door. Now I’m not an artist and I don’t really care for art. I’d rather be beaten by a bunch of Texans in an alleyway for cheating at poker than walk around a museum filled with paintings and statues of naked philosophers. My art itch strikes me rarely and at the most ridiculous times. This time, it was during poop. All the room keyholes in Irish homes are ... read more

Or: (sing it)" It's Better in the Bahamas". In preparation for my future around the world flight I thought; 'Start small Tom; a nice easy trip to the Bahamas'. Learn how to fly 'international'. Apparantly US Customs doesn't care if you leave America. Flying out of the US turned out to be very easy. Get in your plane and go. No flight plan. no clearance. Josian and I had our passports, money, full tanks and two safety yellow life jackets. Beautiful day. No problem getiing to and finding Marsh Habour(MYAM) airport. About an hour and twenty minutes. Huh? The runway (27) looks really nice but as we got to about 200 feet I noticed an X next to the runway numbers. You can't land on those. So I did a nifty little 'jog' to the ... read more

In August of 2008, we spent one week in Nassau. The hotel that we stayed at was the Wyndham Crystal Palace Hotel and Casino, which is right next door to the Sheraton in the Cable Beach area of Nassau. The resort was just fine, except for the very small and shallow water beach. The swimming pool was large and came equipped with an attended water-slide. There is a large casino on property with a couple of bars in the casino. They use the US dollar often in the Bahamas or the Bahamian dollar, it really doesn't matter at all because they are 1/1. There is no benefit on exchanging money from US to Bahamian dollars. We ate a couple of times at the buffett in the hotel which is kind of on the pricy side, but ... read more

Today we’re in Freeport, Bahamas. Freeport doesn’t get great reviews from any crew I’ve spoken to. And apparently ship comment card ratings drop after we go there. But it’s the only Caribbean port of Carnival’s that I hadn’t been to, so I figured I had to still get off the ship and just see for myself. The port itself is mainly industrial. Shipping crates everywhere. It’s also one of the main ports we use on the East Coast for dry dock (when our ships go under renovations for a couple weeks). Currently, the Destiny is in dry dock. I stood out on the Glory’s deck and looked across to her, that old ship of mine . . . I was only there a few months, but so much happened there. Port Lucaya is the main town ... read more

I will preface this entry in saying that this was one of my favorite vacations ever. It's possible I very likely learned the art of cruising and relaxing on this trip - or maybe I just needed a vacation THAT badly. Either way, it was my first bit of time off during a year that has brought many changes, including the purchase of my first home and the beginnings of my master degree. Intinerary on Carnival Sensation's 4 day cruise: Sunday (8/31) - 4PM - Depart Port Canaveral. Monday (9/1) - 8-5PM - Freeport, Bahamas Tuesday (9/2) - 8-5pm - Nassau, Bahamas (would have been 8am-6AM, if not for TS Hannah) Wednesday (9/3) - At sea Thursday (9/4) - Arrive 7AM to Port Canaveral. Myself and Chris left Atlanta about 2:30am early Sunday morning (8/31/08) after ... read more

As some of you may know, I went to the Bahamas for about a week. It was not a vacation though. I was working. We took a research boat, the Coral Reef II to the Bahamas to search for something called submarine hardgrounds. These are cemented areas of sediment that are important to facilitate coral and Stromatolite growth.
