Geo: 51.3814, -2.35745We didn't actually make it to Bath until early afternoon. We kinda took things slow and easy that day, and at first I was worried we might not actually have enough time in Bath since we arrived so late. lol, we did ALL of Bath in only three hours... so much for worrying.Bath is a relatively small town.. everything shut down by 5pm. We spent a couple hours going through the Roman Baths, which were pretty neat. Bath is the site of a very large Roman Bath centered around a natural springs. There used to be huge buildings but now its all ruins. A couple of the large baths are still intact with big pools of water. It actually would have looked really neat in Roman times... not as much now. After that, we ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London May 19th 2011

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Yup, London is definitely another one of my favorite big cities. There's so much to DO in London... you could spend days and not do everything. We only had 3.5, alot in comparison to everywhere else we've been.. and I still didn't get to do nearly everything I would have liked to. Another trip.. another trip.It was definitely fun wandering around London with Harry Potter in mind. lol, I read the whole series during my hardest semester in nursing school. The books were like crack. I'd spend all day at clinical/work, hours studying or reading for school afterwards... and still... I'd squeeze in a few chapters even though I was only going to have a few hours left for precious sleep. I never thought I'd remotely like them (in fact, I was pretty sure ... read more

Geo: 51.2094, 3.22523"If I'd grown up on a farm and was retarded, Bruges might impress me, but I didn't, so it doesn't." - In Brugeslol, one of the more awesome quotes from the movie In Bruges. If you like dark comedy, I completely reccomend it. It's hilarious. We happened to watch it at our hostel in Bled, Slovenia. Obviously the character doesn't like Bruges very much, but it's funny all the same. I liked Bruges. I think I liked Ghent MORE, but I still liked Bruges. Unfortunately, I was in allergy hell at the time, so I definitely didn't enjoy it as much as I could have. My allergies got back when we were leaving Ghent, and I just got insanely bad in Bruges for some reason. Must have a lot of grasses or something. I ... read more

Europe » Belgium » East Flanders » Gent May 15th 2011

Geo: 51.054, 3.72169 Ghent... I never would have come across this place if not for Diana's daddy (Diana, our nursing school buddy). Her dad worked there awhile back, and one night when we were studying at Diana's house, he told us all about Ghent and insisted we go. I mean insisted. There was no NOT going. lol. I have to say... if someone is that passionate about a city... I can't see any reason not to go. At first we weren't too sure about it. Our first sight of the place was pretty ghetto-y. We were walking down a canal past run down buildings lookin for our hostel... Then Skeletor walks by us. I mean... this guy's skin was pulled back over his face and I could probably name the different bones. Just say no to ... read more

Europe » Luxembourg May 13th 2011

Geo: 50.056, 6.02851 Nothing at all. That's what we did. And we did it damned good. =) Sooo... our plans got a little screwy at this point in the trip. We had PLANNED to probably do Copenhagen for a few days before heading to Amsterdam for another few days. But then we bought cuckoo clocks instead... lol. So, two expensive cities in a row didn't seem like a sound plan. Amsterdam is almost as expensive as Paris, and Copenhagen was going to be even more than that. So we skipped Copenhagen. Now where to go... I busted out my guide book to look up what was between Amsterdam and Belgium. ...Luxembourg... hmmmm... So I scanned the very small section on this lil country and came across Clervaux... it has a monastery with chanting Gregorian monks. lol, ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam May 9th 2011

Geo: 52.3738, 4.89095 Amsterdam was another one of our favorite big cities- that and Munich. There's just soooo much to it. Yes, there's the drugs... the sex... ...and more drugs.... but there's a lot of neat history to it as well. We had our second to the last really long train ride getting into Amsterdam from Prague- 12.5 hours. And we had to be up stupid early... the most stupidest early yet this trip. I mean, there was a freakin FOUR as the first digit. Sigh. 4:45am we were gettin up to trek to the train station, before people were even stumbling home drunk from their night of partying. Needless to say, we passed the eff out on the train, lol. We got really lucky. Most trains have seats in pairs and rows... but some cars ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague » Old Town May 7th 2011

Geo: 50.0878, 14.4205 So, as mentioned before, Prague was not on our original route. We planned to probably go up to Berlin and then Copenhagen before heading over to Amsterdam. But we realized Copenhagen was going to be expensive- all the hostels were already out of our budget range. And we still had Amsterdam and London, equally expensive cities to visit. And Berlin... we just weren't too excited about. The Wall sounds cool, but other than that... its a party city. And since we're nearing the end of our trip, we're really watching our budget now. lol. Anyway, throughout our travels we have run into several people telling us, "Have you gone to Prague...?... Well... are you going to...? What do you mean, no! YOU HAVE TO! Its one of my favorite cities!" After hearing that ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria May 3rd 2011

Geo: 47.5714, 10.7017So, this was actually three different cities, not just Fussen. The Romantic Road is stretched along several cities and towns, and generally include small castles and medieval architecture. We just picked three cities we thought we would like, and explored them over 4 days. Our first stop was Fussen, to visit Neuschwanstein, the castle that Walt Disney designed his after. It was built by King Ludwig II, a young kid, just barely an adult. He was obsessed with swans and Wagnerian opera, and he built his castle in dedication to those themes. The kid was definitely a dreamer, and probably not someone who should be running a country, lol. I liked the way one guy we met put it, "He's like the misunderstood Michael Jackson of his time." His castle was just so over the ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich May 1st 2011

Geo: 48.1374, 11.5755So, we were worried Munich would just be another big lame city, like Madrid, and lacking in personality. Its actually on our favorites list now. =) Our main reason for going there was so we could check out the Dachau concentration camp. Someday, Chris wants to check out Auschwitz in Poland, but as our rail passes arent covered there and its way out of the way on our loop, that will just have to be another future trip.Unfortunately we had to get up at the crack of dawn to get to Munich that Sunday. We were planning on leaving later (because sleeping in is such a luxury, and it just doesnt happen as often as youd think on our trip), but Dachau wasnt open on Mondays. So, we were up at 6am making our ... read more

Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Freiburg April 30th 2011

Geo: 47.9972, 7.85377 So, we really only had one day to spend in the Black Forest, due to our first late train. I have to hand it to the Europeans for having a ridiculously efficient and timely train system. The one time our train was late, it was REALLY late. We had a three hour ride from Interlaken to Freiburg, and just 30min from our last stop, the train came to a halt in the middle of nowhere. Several announcements went off in German, of course none of which we understood. Per usual, we just knew something was wrong based on everyone else's reactions. We werent the only two confused travellers, though, so a German guy was translating for another guy. He said that there was an accident on the tracks up ahead, and our train ... read more
