3 September 2016, Ansiao to Condeixa-A-Nova. 34.95 kilometers. Another 20 + mile day in the heat. Departing early to beat the heat, Carlos fixed us sandwiches for breakfast. An early morning photo of Adega Tipica and we catch the sunrise on our way up the hill out of town. The road takes us past a new sports ground. As we approached Bate Aqua/Alem da Ponte we are greeted by a little white dog who we named the “Town Crier” as his barks leads us around the town. He stops and turns, right where we need to turn. The path now proceeds steeply through a forest of pine and eucalyptus trees before coming to an asphalt road leading us into Netos. After making a right hand turn at the end of the village, we find ourselves back ... read more

2 September, Friday, Alvaiazere to Ansiao. 14.4 kilometers. This is our shortest day of the trip so far. This is only about eight and a half miles walking. We are able to have breakfast at 7 therefore start our journey at 8. In Residencia O Bras there are two women from San Francisco area who are also walking the Camino and we all leave about the same time. We go to the town square and then follow the Camino route up a slight incline into the countryside. On this road we see a gentleman washing his clothes in an open tank. He and his friend from England live down the road. We also see a lady stacking firewood in a shed while her husband loads a tractor trailer with more wood just up the road. We ... read more

Day 7, Tomar to Alvaiazere After two rest days in Tomar, which we used to visit Fatima and see the Knights Templar Castle, we are back on the Camino Portugal headed towards Santiago. Today is another very long day, according to Brierley, it is almost thirty kilometers if you make no wrong turns. So we're up at 5:45, have bags packed, and pick up our breakfast/lunch sacks to be out the door at 6:45. The way out of town is over the Old Bridge and immediately left along the riverbank to an old abandoned canal. As it turned out we turn too soon and had to backtrack to find a street which then took us along the abandoned canal. This went well until the road ended in a very narrow path along the river and in the ... read more

31 August 2016, Wednesday A wonderful day to sleep in. August 31 Wednesday. Exploring Tomar--synagogue and Knights Templar If one is a romantic and grows up, as a child, in a little ranching town in eastern Oregon, you are prone to dreams of far-away, exotic places. Tomar is the answer with its knights and castle. However, hopefully the first picture up will be that of 'Our Lady of Fatima.' I reread the last blog and realized we had not even put in a picture of her! But first we have breakfast and meet a gentleman from Washington state who is traveling with his wife and 91 year old mother-in-law. Pretty soon the mother-in-law comes in, all ready to walk. They had planned to have a walking vacation but, since the Camino is not well marked and ... read more

August 30 Tuesday. Fatima Rest Day After a lovely breakfast in the glassed in dining room, we wend our way to the train and bus stations. We purchase tickets to Fatima and get on the bus. Somehow we have irritated the bus driver. A group of drivers were standing around, talking, when we arrived. We find the correct line and the side doors are open so we go in, thinking we will move forward and have our ticket stamped when the driver alights his coach. He is most agitated when he approaches us in the bus and we can only guess that we were to wait outside until he first went in and then beckoned us to enter his realm. The funny thing is that, just like my train conductor, when you don't speak their language ... read more

Day 6. We leave the beautiful equestrian town of Golega and proceed along the road toward Tomar. In spite of Brierley's directions to head east into the sun we missed one turn which did not take us to the correct intersection so had to travel up the road about the 300 or 400 metres to find the correct intersection. Here we saw our first Rota do Calvo e do Ribatejo sign marking the Camino route through this region of Portugal. We now follow an asphalt road to the village of São Caetano, on the Rio Tejo. In the 12th Century this area was given to the care of the Templar, by H. Alfonso Henriques, as a reward for their part in the defensive system against the Spanish and Arab Invaders. For a time it became the ... read more

28 August 2016, Sunday Santarem to Golega. - Portugal horse country. Day 5. Leaving our hotel Umu, in Santarem, we have to walk back up into the town and then down to the train station. As we had learned the night before from Miguel's staff the ticket office would be open to purchase a train ticket for Karen to go to the small train station closest to Golega. As Jo and I leave the train station the agent directs us to the end of the platform then on the road across the tracks. We walk a short way when I realized from Brierley that we need to go back the other way, past the train station, to find the Camino. Sure enough about 100 meters beyond the station is the route going to our left. Now ... read more

August 27 Saturday. Azambuja to Santarem Karen here----this is one of those 'poor me' days that just seems to bring out the worst in one!!! Unless you want to read about surly train comductors and hotel receptionists that can bring one to tears, skip on down to Harlan's section!!? Yes, I am having a different Camino experience! We are off to the train station to buy me a ticket. The station is open but there is not a ticket agent. Harlan keeps trying to purchase a ticket via a machine that will not cooperate. We eventually think this machine is for travel going south only. We are still stymied when we use a machine on the train overpass. However, Harlan buys a ticket for 6 Euros. we validate the ticket on a machine and I get ... read more

August 26 Friday - Karen's Alternative Blog From the Leziria Parque Hotel we follow the busy road and GPS to the train station - not the way Harlan and Jo had come the night before. At the train station, we buy a train ticket for me to Azambuja. They wave good-by and start off for their day of adventures. My big feat is getting off at the right station. It should be a no-brainer as it is the end of the line for this particular train run. We will be lodged in Hotel Ouro, right on the Camino according to both Brierley and Follow the Camino. A short train ride and I have arrived at my destination. The room is ready although my arrival time is very early. It has taken barely an hour and 80 ... read more

25 August, Thursday. About 16 miles. We leave our nice hotel after discussing options for travel that day. It is decided that I will take the train to the area nearest our next lodging. My wheeze and cough are still my constant companions and I want to be fit by the time we reach Oporto. Jo and Harlan will flit along the Camino. No one is attending train station in Santa Iria de Azoia. So we walk the road N-10 to the station at Povoa. We find the nearby train station, Povoa Santa Iria. It is very confusing and the hotel desk clerk has warned me there are suburban trains, regional trains and local. Not all stop at a station. A station attendant tells me I have just missed one and then just disappears. Since I ... read more
