24 August 2016, Wednesday. Lisbon to Santa Iria Day 1 23.73 km In a prior blog entry I believe I mentioned that we arranged the Camino Portugal through Follow the Camino. Our lodging in Lisbon was arranged separately through Airbnb. But follow the Camino had contracted our luggage transfer. We were ready for them at 8 a.m. but no one arrived. At 9 o'clock I called the contact number in Ireland and asked who was to pick up our luggage? After a time I receive the driver's name and phone number. Our great landlady, Felicidade, called and asked him to contact her at the time he would come for the luggage. So at 10:30, two hours later than expected we were out the door and down Rua Vigario to Santa Apollonia station where we caught the ... read more

Alfama duplex Airbnb is our perch for the 3 days prior to the start of our walk on Wednesday. Jo and i spent Saturday walking in Lisbon. We found the cathedral Se, the starting point for Camino Portugal, a bank ATM and took the castle of saint George, Sao Jorge, walking tour in Rick Steves' Portugal guide book. A few photos from our day. I am learning that posting private is hard to then send public. So may need to cut and paste. ... read more

The idea for this update came today as I revisited some of the comments we received from fellow travelblog writers who have followed our trip on the Camino Frances August to October 2015. When we returned to our home town we provided the interim pastor at our church with a scallop shell as a token of our appreciation for his blessing for our journey. He then took the opportunity to say, "You know, I have been thinking! The period of lent is really like a pilgrimage. How would you like to spend 10 or 15 minutes each of five Wednesday evenings recounting your spiritual journey on El Camino de Santiago de Compostela?" So we put together five different segments: (1) Preparation and Beginning, (2) Tired but Undaunted we continue, (3) This is not what we thought ... read more
