6 October 2015, Tuesday Triacastela to Sarria, Stage 31, GPS: No data as watch died and operator error after recharging. Fitbit: Steps: 29149, Stairs:101, Miles: 12.73 We have a buffet breakfast associated with the albergue, several doors down street. It is a full breakfast and delicious. Complexo Xacobeo is a place to remember. Xacobeo is the Galician word for Jacobeo which translates into James. So the Way of St James and the Camino de Santiago are terms used interchangeable through out. We don our rain gear and are out the door a little after nine. We walk to the end of the Main Street and turn right toward the San Xil route. I would have so enjoyed the other, longer route to the Samos Monastery but the weather is iffy and it adds six kilometers to ... read more

Today is lots of down hill slogging. With a lot more up hill than expected! Because of the darkness and fog we walk along the road to Linares. There are many pilgrims including some bus groups walking the rocky path and the road. The two meet here and we stop for an OJ, ... read more

4 October 2015, Stage 29, Sunday Valcarce to O'Cebreiero. GPS: 13.17 miles From Hotel Valcarce to Meson Anton Fitbit: Miles: 10.9, Steps: 25.058, Stairs: 290 As forecast we awake to rain. Bags down by 0800 was a bit of a challenge since decisions on what to wear for warmth and dryness delayed packing. But we managed and had breakfast in restaurant. For a truck stop all was very good. Karen thought eggs, ham, tomatoes, and tortilla was way too much food. So we gave half our tomatoes to a couple from Eugene, Oregon. She is/was a Doctor and they lived in SE Portland. Karen has on rain pants and we are both wearing rain coats then our backpacks with ponchos over everything. We are along the highway, climbing gradually, until Herrerias. The rain reduces visibility of ... read more

On the weekend the breakfast in the Parador is 30 minutes later. And with the group of 39 Australians touring by bus from Paris to Santiago, breakfast is slow like dinner last night had been. But it is a good spread with buffet style self service. We had booked this Parador after they had sent an email indicating that they had had cancellations and now had a room. We ... read more

Fitbit: 20.3 miles, 46,476 steps, 117 floors. Today and yesterday were two very tough days. The ups and downs from Rabanal to Molinaseca on rocky mule path and the very long day with several up hill climbs to Villafranca have taken a toll and we are welcoming our rest day; especially our feet and toes. From our cozy room at La Posada de Muriel on the edge of town in Molinaseca we are soon off and on the Camino. Looking back at the last plaza in town we see a ... read more

Fitbit: 18.07 miles, 41,366 steps and 145 stairs. We left our lovely Nuestra Senior del Pilar Albergue, with a few private rooms, at 0806 this morning. We had a great salad last night for dinner after stuffing ourselves with the traditional Cocida Maragato dish with five or more meats, cabbage and garbanzo beans with soup and tapioca type pudding plus the obligatory bread. This we had hoped to eat in Astorga but found it only served for lunch because it is soooo much food. One order for two of us was ... read more

We go down near San Francisco Square for coffee con leche, orange juice and a croissant. Karen’s Barcelona La Merce - 2015. Barcelona Due to Mike and Marta Hurwitz's enthusiasm we have taken a week off the camino and flown to Barcelona to participate in La Merce-a giant, city-wide festival in the fall. It is everything they have said and we had a wonderful time with a nice blend of festival activities and the normal sight seeing venues. Background - exciting times, for the first time there is an official referendum to determine if Catalonia will separate from Spain. The election will occur two days after we return to Leon and we will thankfully be on the trail again. Everyone has strong opinions from our landlady who thinks the world will come to an end if the separatists win, to the young couple in one of the main squares, who as we ... read more
