The Cotswolds deserve their reputation. Everything you've heard about them is probably true, even the cliche's! Yes they are quintessentially English, they are post card picturesque, they are the playground for the well to do and the 'Champagne Charlies' from the cities, the are quaint, charming and really quite beguiling and yes every village does serve cream teas, pork pies, fish and chips, pasties (which they pronounce nothing like we don't!) and ice-creams but not all at once! From Chipping Campden via Stow on the Wold, Long Compton and Little Compton, Upper Slaughter and Lower Slaughter to Bourton on the Water Even the place names are enchanting! Apart from not being able to see over the hedgerows for half the journey the drive is delightful. We keep off the main arterial roads which means frequent 'disorientations' ... read more
Chipping Campden. Probably my favourite Cotswold village.
Bourbon on the Water. Second favourite?
Chipping Campden Main Street.

It's early blog time having just gone midday. Just completed a little cheese and biscuit snack whilst sitting in the garden of our BnB in the SUNSHINE. It is almost warm here and really quite pleasant. The morning was spent in delightful Moreton on Marsh doing our laundry. But really that's just putting it in the machine, working out how to get laundry powder and how to turn the machine on. But really really that's just giving it to Lee then going for a walk around the town. We did though go to Broadmoor Tower, the highest tower in the Cotwalds (bit like saying I was the best long jumper in kindergarten). I walked there when I walked the Cotswald Way and it is a bit of a destination spot. Now it's walk time for me ... read more
Chipping Campden, the tradition breakfast shot (you can't call a breakfast like this brekkie!).
Guess what's on today's?
But there is also the obligatory tower.

Delightful brekkie in Abergavenny. Often convincing our host that a cooked breakfast is a bit much for us is difficult but this one caught on quickly and substituted fresh fruit salad and yoghurt much to our pleasure. I'll try to get a photo of the breakfast table as it was quite attractive and quite well done. We asked for an instant replay tomorrow so that should be possible. Then it's drive time. Off to the Welsh Museum of Natural History (wake up, it is in fact pretty good). The museum spans several acres around and near a splendid castle and has exhibits that have been bought in and reconstructed from all over Wales and from various periods in history. Houses, barns, mills, a school, shops and the like span a period of more than 500 years ... read more

Does it get any better than 'Lamb & Mint' potato chips?
Yes it does! Crispy Bacon made from potatoes born and raised in Wales

Farewell to old England, but not forever. Sandy and Francis have been such good hosts that we're planning our return visit already (don't tell them, let them get over this visit first!). Although we both eagerly look forward to the next 5 weeks as we wheel around the place we were a bit sad to say 'see ya later' to Rose Cottage and its resident. Both Lee and I had a great time doing just what we wanted. Sometimes nothing, sometimes walking, sometimes nothing, sometimes cooking, sometimes nothing, sometimes 'strimming' or whatever we did enjoy our time there. The place is great, the company is terrific, the cider delightful and the weather terrible (well 3 out of 4 ain't bad!). Last night was spent dining at Kentsbury Grange, the Michelin starred restaurant of Michael Caines. Bit ... read more

Back to England. Somerset near Taunton in a little spot named Simonsbath. It's rained all day and the skies are a dull, thick grey but it doesn't matter as the KLW is now ancient history. From Fussen on the train to Munich, from Munich to the Flughaften (the airport) on the S8, to England, Manchester thanks to Luftansa and then train to Birmingham and to Taunton where Lee and Francis were there to collect me and take me to my new home. Historically we have flown to Manchester (close to my original walk, the Coast to Coast) and despite the fact it's a 4 hour train trip I booked to Manchester again much to the protest of everyone here who thinks any 4 hour journey by train is impossibly long and incredibly silly. Well I like ... read more

Our hotel even encouraged us to take a couple of rolls and even provided some lunch bags. So it was out the door and down to the bus station with half our breakfast tucked under our arms. And that was 7:15 in the morning! Some of you probably didn't realize there is a 7:15 am as well as a 7:15 pm. So we arrive at the castles, do the quick sprint in order to queue along with 50 or so others that somehow managed to get there before us. But we managed tickets at reasonable times. Neuschwanstein at 9:50 and Hohenschwangau at 12:50. Doesn't sound reasonable but with the distance between castles and lunch that isn't too bad and I wasn't paying for a horse to pull me up in a wagon (not at €4.50 up ... read more

Julie and I have 3 nights here in the Hotel Sonne. Very comfortable with a fantastic breakfast buffet that is comprehensive and indeed as complete as we have encountered anywhere. The service is terrific from desk to wait staff in the hotel (pretty good outside in the beer garden) but the place is quirky. A couple of the photos show period costume mannequins and to put it bluntly they are a little spooky. They lurk around corners in the passage and really all over the place. There's one that guards our door! The hotel is known for its art and its idiosyncratic decorating styles and well it probably should be. There's a paper wedding dress in the 'romantic' dining room, there's grass carpet on the walls of the lift, there are very non German paintings all ... read more

If you're an avid photo follower don't get too excited as most of the photos are of a big Bavarian parade that passed through the town. Seemed like a mixture of Moomba and the Sydney Mardi Gras, with all the leather and feathers and braces and ... But really the lederhosen come up pretty well and some of guys you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley. There were bands and horses and bands and wagons and bands and the mayor and bands and did I mention bands, well there were lots of them. There was even a cow bells group, sounded just like the real thing. Random yelled sort of yodels accompanied the music and the marchers were having fun which was a bit of a surprise as you usually see lederhosen guys with ... read more

We're here. But really nobody wants to know that because around here it's all about Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle. We walked to the castles, through the car park and ticket centre and past the castles. We left about 1000 people behind and will rejoin the throng on Monday where we will have to be up early to get in front of at least the majority of them. Booking is so heavy that we could not book on the internet despite trying a week or so ago. Tours operate from 8 till 5 seven days a week so it will give you some idea of how many people go through these castles. walking to and from them is a good introduction to them as they seem to magically appear, disappear and reappear as our walking track ... read more
What a difference some good weather makes. The colours are better, there's the alps in the background, it's just good.
An early glimpse.
No idea. We just walk in a state of blissful ignorance.

Big day's walk today. Thirty km and the major section again walked in the rain. Some parts were particularly scenic but again spoilt by the rain and/ or inclement weather but we made it so things aren't too bad. The Gasthof zur Post last night had excellent meals. Julie has a Weiner schnitzel which was good, I had venison goulash which was very good. Thick, unctuous sauce that was rich and tasty with really good pieces of venison and a surprisingly good dumpling went down very well. The dessert was pretty good too. Mascopone cheese on a chocolate laced sponge and topped with a berry jelly covering it looked good, tasted good and didn't last long. Breakfast didn't measure up so well! No fruit at all, the only choice for cereal was take it or leave ... read more
