Big day's walk today. Thirty km and the major section again walked in the rain. Some parts were particularly scenic but again spoilt by the rain and/ or inclement weather but we made it so things aren't too bad.
The Gasthof zur Post last night had excellent meals. Julie has a Weiner schnitzel which was good, I had venison goulash which was very good. Thick, unctuous sauce that was rich and tasty with really good pieces of venison and a surprisingly good dumpling went down very well. The dessert was pretty good too. Mascopone cheese on a chocolate laced sponge and topped with a berry jelly covering it looked good, tasted good and didn't last long. Breakfast didn't measure up so well! No fruit at all, the only choice for cereal was take it or leave it and even the meat and cheese selection was as restrictive as we have seen anywhere and because it was preplated and served to us it made it very difficult to get our traditional 'take-away lunch' that we have become quite accustomed too and quite fond of.
Again we set off in the rain. When you have 30 km to walk you can't
really afford to wait for the weather to clear. Our gear does what it can but 3 hours of heavy rain takes it toll. The only time the rain eased was when we went into a church for 5 minutes. Just shows that He has a sense of humour! There are shots of my feet - before, during and after but really they are holding up very well.
But it did stop and really we arrived basically dry although we have an array of wet clothes and socks to hang out (again).
The terrain is changing. Lakes have become a major landmark here and the alps are visible whenever the clouds lift or clear. We have glimpsed our first castle and posters and ads and images of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are springing up all over the place. It means more tourists but... The track in places has been underwater and there's a photo that shows just that. You can not walk around puddles like that as the edges are often swampy and even wetter. Have a look at the walker who did stray off the track. There was a section that consisted of probably 300 m or so
of planks laid just above a boggy swamp. It worked really well. The strangest part was that there were a series of seats along the way. As if someone would want to sit in the middle of a swamp! The 30 km took us just over 7 hours which was good going. As it rains we tend to just walk. We don't take breaks at all in the rain so our km per hour rate actually goes up! Lunch was quick. Change socks eat quickly and off again as rain threatened. Along the way we're a couple of cake shops so we did take the opportunity for a good cake and a hot chocolate importantly without cream. Here cream is ubiquitous and always that fake, mock, airy stuff so we are always quick to add the caveat of 'no schlag'.
Couple of jobs and dinner time so must go.
