A week in Inverness. Sounds like I've won fifth prize in the local primary school raffle! But no, Inverness is quite a delightful place despite the very Scottish weather. It has rained every day for the last week but it only lasts a few minutes (but then again so does the sunshine!) which means it really hasn't stopped us doing anything or we have been a little wet but never soaked. I've walked the streets following the Inverness Town Walk which was really informative and really quite interesting. The Sanderson 'free walking' tours had finished the previous week and that probably would have been my preferred option but me as a 'tour guide' is only scary to others! Things appear to be closing down quite quickly now that Summer (?) is officially over. It hasn't impacted ... read more

Route 500. Wow! Five hundred miles of magnificent scener. But probably 400 miles of single lane roads! That's not a grumble but it does mean numerous pulling overs and a few reverses in order to traverse the distance safely. We drove the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland a couple of years back and this route is as good if not better. The scenery is spectacular and it is everywhere. Along the way our BnB places have been great and we have enjoyed the food and beers as much as we have anywhere. We drove to John O'Groats today, much to Lee's disappointment! I'm not sure what she expected but more than a signpost and a couple of icecream stores I'd reckon. Well 10 minutes later were off and heading south. We stopped at Dunrobin Castle which ... read more

That's the old teacher at the 'old schoolhouse'. You're looking at a tender, succulent and really quite unctuous beef cheek. Very nice dish and despite the fact we were both tired the meal went down very well. Can't afford to go back but it was good. In fact we've just eaten at the local pub and although you could have fired a cann in the restaurant the food there was pretty good as well. I had a lovely oven baked haddock. It's fish you find everywhere here, it is the fall back option for fish and chips, so it's a good firm, flaky fish that is easy to fillet. But today was walking in the wet day. The wind blew, the heavens opened and it was wild. I walked to a local landmark know as 'the ... read more

Stopped at 'Cairns' today. Don't you love 'em. Usually as I walk I'm happy enough to see a cairn as it indicates I'm going the correct way. They are comfortiNg and reassuring and at times even vital. I have been fogged in to the extent I've had to take compass bearings and literally go from cairn to cairn on bearings as visability has been so poor. But today I just love 'em because they are so cute! Not marked on any map and not mentioned in any guide book or tourist brochure but simply there on the side of the road and there in their hundreds. Little cuties. Several cars had stopped and everyone was equally intrigued and equally surprised. Not so cute are the 'Well of the seven heads' shots. The second one although pretty ... read more

Ah, Ben Nevis! The magic of conquering the highest peak in the UK has lasted one day! Now that feeling has been utterly eliminated! I was happy taking just over 7 hours for the up and down, some runner did it in 70 minutes today! It was the annual Ben Nevis race and this guy has won the events for 8 consecutive years. We picked up a hitch hiker today who had competed in the event and he had the time of just over 90 minutes so my day's hike was sounding very, very average. He did look a bit stiff and weary and he was thankful for the lift but he had just run up and down Ben Nevis! It's compulsory to take gloves, a hat and a coat (last year the temp at the ... read more

Lots of photos (42 I think) today. Some will be embedded into the text as that's the way this app works. The rest will be accessible via a button below the text. Today its worth looking at the photos. They will either convince you to go walk/climb Ben Nevis or convince you not to walk/climb Ben Nevis. It's almost 8 hours of walking, surprisingly almost as long descending as ascending for me. I know I walk fastear uphill and slower downhill relative to others but it become pretty apparent today. My knee gave me a little concern on the downhill section (that's everything after reaching the summit!) so that didn't help but generally the walk is really good. It is busy. The uncommonly good weather and the fact that there is a race up and down ... read more

Missed my ale pie last night. I know sad but true. My fault though as I noted that the pie came from a larger pie and I really wanted an individual one as I maintain that slices reheated go a little hard and dry around the edges. So the search goes on. Long ago have I given up on finding rabbit in any form so my holy grail is now a good ale pie (well not really. I haven't completely given up but I'm talking myself into it!). But the own brewed ales are very good and the pub itself is very good. As well as canine brews it is dog friendly and dogs are everywhere. There were 6 in just one of the areas here! We travelled to the north of the Lakes District near ... read more

Up early for a walk. From our barn conversion BnB (that's code for 'watch your head as you walk around) my walk was about 20 minutes away, so that's fine. Without breakfast, quite unusual for a B'nB but.. I booted up and headed off. The walk takes me around 2 of the lakes in the Lake District, although I know that technically there's only a single lake in the Lake District, the others being waters, seas and the like. I walked around Rydal and Grasmere whatevers. with a couple of deviations to gain some elevation for the views the total distance was pretty close to 10 miles. That distance is good and it meant I could walk it and return and still find Lee in bed. So it's breakfast time really but obviously not at our ... read more

Just increased my blog readership by 2, so that increases my audience by 50%. Sorry Vlad the maths is correct (and that's counting my mum who doesn't even have a computer, lap top or tablet)! Sad story but true. The 2 are two delightful ex Moscovites (are you ever an ex Moscovites or do you always remain a Moscovites?) who now live in London. We met them in Great Hucklow which did turn out to be pretty great. They stayed at the same pub and made the mistake of laughing at my jokes and listening to my stories and then the almost fatal error of offering to share a pint or two! There were terrific (anyone who laughs at my jokes has a well developed sense of humour!) and were indeed excellent company over evening meal ... read more

Not exactly in the Hope Valley but we are pretty close. Actually we're in Great Hucklow but only those in Little Hucklow know where Great Hucklow is. Why it's great is still a bit of a secret but as I sit in the beer garden of the Queen Anne and have a couple of ciders and chat with the locals it is getting better and better. The fact that everything just goes on the tab is a little deceptive and makes it appear that drinks and meals are free here. We haven't paid for anything for 2 days here! The shock will come as I sober up tomorrow! The locals are delightful here and even better I can still understand them! We are actually staying in an old pub. It's been an inn since the 1600‘s ... read more
