Off I went on my Jinja tour today which apparently included the source of the Nile however I had to pay my entrance fee seperately when I got there hmmmmm. not to worry I got refunded when I got back - I was sure of it! Jinja, the second largest town and industrial heart of Uganda is 80km from Kampala, here is found the source of the Nile! so Levi (my very friendly tour guide) and Silent Bob (my driver) took me on my trip to Jinja, first we headed over the Owen falls Dam which was my first ever glimpse of the Nile and it looked beautiful, I was really excited about visiting the source now. We drove through Jinja which looked like a mix of the wildwest and the Australian outback - it was ... read more

So here I am in Uganda, the final leg of my East Africa tour. Arrival at the airport was the usual African mayhem, everyone was queuing at the something to declare aisle and no one was going through the nothing to declare aisle, I said to Mike well come on lets just go through. he said NO there is something not right here - lets just join the queue. Of course no one in the world queues as good as us brits do they? so everyone was pushing in and bumping each other - it was a nightmare. It turned out that they were making everyone get scanned before entry to the country due to the somali bombs in July 2010. Well that had been the biggest waste of 30 minutes that I would never get ... read more

Jambo I am going to talk about Esther today, a wonderful kind, generous, intelligent lady who works for the same company as me. Esther has lived in Nairobi all of her life and can only speak highly of it, she loves it and could not think of anywhere else she would rather live and I love her attitude about her own country. Esther works hard, she is a marketing assistant who works Monday - friday 9-5 like most of us and then she goes to college straight from work every single day until 8pm and then comes home and cooks for herself. At weekends she travels to Mombassa where he Husband lives as this is where he has a job, she leaves after college at 8pm and returns very early on a Monday morning. I said ... read more

I met a new team today, these guys are to be the Nairobi Fire Wardens. - here is a picture of them Mike and I trained the team in what fire is, how it starts and how to put it out etc, they were a great bunch, very friendly and asked me alot about the UK economy. They were interested in wages and what the minimum wage was, when I explained this to them they thought WOW that is alot of money, but then I explained the cost of living, mortgages, Council tax, bills etc - they nearly fell off of their chairs. They said I would be rich if I lived in their country as many people can live on 1-2 US dollars a day. For the price of my Maisonette in Langley I could ... read more

Jambo (Hi) Have been to the Nairobi Office today, We have been organising the fire training for the staff and preparing the manual handling course for Uganda next week. I spied some construction workers today climbing all over scaffolding today without any harnesses, If they fell they would be gone... very dangerous. There are many street sellers here, they walk up and down the road with anything that they have to sell, in the middle of the road, it could be anything, newspapers, dresses, knickers, water, cd's, boomerangs - literally anything, - can you imagine people walking barefoot up the M4 selling all this stuff :) there would be even more mayhem than there currently is! Dad - Spoke to the hotel staff today and Hurlingham Estate still exists infact it is a very upmarket part ... read more

We had a stop off in the Dar Es Salaam office this morning to discuss their HSE requirements and then we headed to the airport... after being scanned at least 3 times and taken our shoes off god knows how many times we were finally through and ready to start our journey to Nairobi, Kenya. I have been looking forward to this bit, My dad lived here when he was a young boy and it is exciting to see where he lived albeit that it has more than likely changed alot in 50 odd years - yes dad you are an old man now. On the plane I sat next to a nice Indian/Tanzanian guy who decided to discuss with me his thoughts on the aircraft.... hmmmm he said.... that noise coming from the engine doesnt ... read more

Finally arrived at Dar Today started out like any other day except Suitbert was up in time for breakfast - maybe that is what upset the ying yang of the day hmmmmm. We went to the Mwanza office and discussed the Fire Escape and alarm needs and we went off for our 2pm flight, when we arrived at the airport we discovered there was no 2pm flight but that we should have gone at 12.40, we were put on the 5pm. we kept ourselves busy watching others getting their flights and having drinks then Mike realised he had lost his best glasses, After almost 2 hours of looking for them phoning people and ripping bags apart I almost begged the gods for something else to go wrong before we got on the plane so that our ... read more

I took my Sunday relaxing by the lake and then moved by the rather disgusting swimming pool (it had been filled with water from the lake) - I moved here to purchase a refreshment and I got speaking to a gent about the pool, he then asked if I knew of any boat rides, I said sorry no I am not on holiday. He said no neither are we - we have the weekend off - they were a group of Volunteer dentists showing tanzanians ow to extract teeth (in clinics of course) the gent (Barry as he turned out to be) went to reception and asked, and sure enough there was a boat ride around Victoria lake and he asked if I would like to join them and of course I said yes, it wouldnt ... read more
