Last night Glenn (British ex pat) offered to take Gideon and I out to dinner, Gideon refused but after some encouragement he agreed and we went for an indian curry, something new for Gideon. He tells me that he is not at all adventurous however his wife is always telling him off because he should try new things, I agreed so I said come on lets play pool, "oh no" he said "I dont know the rules" "Neither do I" I replied "but its fun" he still insisted on no until I made him step out of his comfort zone and play, after almost taking the cloth off of the table he actually became quite good and bless him he was dead pleased with himself. I am now sitting in the hotel reception waiting for him ... read more

Africa » Ghana » Ashanti » Kumasi April 7th 2011

This morning Gideon and I set off on a 4 hour turned 6 hour road trip to Kumasi, it is so called Kumasi because the Ashanti king planted two trees called Kuma trees, one died and the other lived, the one that lived was called Kumasi. Another bit of history, a bit of girl power, 50 years ago a young brave ghanain woman led the battle of independence against the British and won! go girlie! So we set off, on good roads and really bumpy dirt tracks because the government cant make up their minds if they want to spend their money on the roads or their nice new offices (picture coming up soon) we passed many villages and a radio station discussed the desperate need for medical staff, I asked Gideon, what happens if you ... read more

It had not occurred to me that women may not have the same equality here in Ghana as they have progressed to have in other countries in Africa, now I realise this I understand certain things more. As Jane pointed out in Nigeria, you don’t see a man carrying a child. The family is woman’s work, she may have a full time job but she then must come home and look after her home and family even if she is ill, heavily pregnant or has just had a baby there is no time for rest, there is a family to feed. I did like what I heard on the radio this morning “a child strapped to his mothers back cannot see the long and tedious journey ahead of him” I was delighted when I was visited ... read more

Before leaving I said to Jane "this is probably stereotyping but I imagine Ghana to be full of colour and women with pineapples on their heads" Well I have today seem some really bright colours everywhere mainly the flag and some groovy outfits and I saw one woman carrying pineapples on her head.... Yesterday I arrived at Heathrow T5 Earlier than I expected so after I had exhausted all the usual shops and had eaten sushi for lunch I decided to head to the lounge – but I couldn’t find it, so I asked at the Info point where the Priority Pass lounge was and she said “there is no lounge here I am afraid, you can only use the lounge if you are business class or higher” Well I must stay British Airways is out ... read more

last night the airport was hot, the queues were long and the air conditioning machines were pointless, I was molested (body search) by 2 immigration ladies - well at least I hope thats who they are, had my bag searched with high amusement due to the resus doll and was told off by another for having water in my bag... When Jane offered me a glass of wine in the British Airways Business Class Lounge (which was a treat because I am in economy) I was very happy in fact I could have drunk the whole bottle... we both relaxed with newspapers and listened to the Japanese events on the bbc news, it is really sad what these people are going through at the moment and I wish all the people in Japan my very best. ... read more

it is lunchtime here in Lagos and it is incredibly humid, there are so many power cuts on a daily basis no one even notices them anymore, they just carry on regardless. Horns are beeping and people are walking up and down the street with their shopping on their heads. this morning I came in and listened to the Health and Safety briefing, it was short so I came away to set up for the first aid assessments, I later discovered that they were short for a reason, it was so that Jane and I could be introduced along with all of the Safety committee.... ooops. I have since given my apologies. when I arrived to set up two of the first aiders were already here, they were in full practice, I was really proud to ... read more

From 8am to 9am every day this week there has been a speaker discussing different aspects of health and safety to 250 people from the whole company - todays speaker discussed respiritory systems, as part of his discussion he talked about smoking, he advised that smoking was neither good for you or bad for you ... infact its up to you to decide for yourself, I thought hmmm I am not sure about this one I will talk to the first aiders about this in the class. we talked about the dangers of smoking, some agreed that smoking is bad for you but if you smoke it is your choice and you still get cancer anyway if you dont smoke. A gentleman asked me about breast cancer, he said that in Nigeria they can predict it ... read more

“What coffee you like?” Victor asked me yesterday “I always get Mike his favourite coffee when he comes” I smiled and said “don’t worry about me I don’t drink coffee, I am a PG tips girl and Mike says you cant get that in Africa” surprised Victor replied “WHAT? Who told him that? We will see” and then he left with a cheeky grin. This morning Victor came in the office with a box of PG tips, how lush! all the guys had a taste of them too and agreed that PG tips are good ... the attached PG tip pictures are taken for Mike I had my 250 person manual handling course – seemed to be popular – the first aiders helped me – they did the practical demonstrations and then Sheygan (not sure how ... read more

or so they tell me... its a herbal remedy with magic spells... hmmm I dont think so and most of them dont beleive it either... On driving into work Jane has been pointing out these incredible slums, Nigeria is very overcrowded and is filled with much poverty such as the rest of Africa therefore they build where they can. These slums are built on the water on a lagoon, they are huts built on stilts and this area is called Makako. Many fishermen and families from the country areas come to Lagos in the hope of finding their riches and a better life in Nigerias Oil Rich capital of Lagos; however this does not always happen for them, two out of three Lagos residents live in slums with no access to clean readily available water, electricity ... read more
