I walked into the restaurant in the hotel tonight, on my own, Mike is busy with his Open University work so he is eating in is room. I hovered around the buffet, buffet food gets a bit boring after a while but I asked the young girl who smiled at me like a cheshire cat, Sumaya, what she recommended "Goat" she said, well of course she would I thought, they always recommend goat, ah well what have I got to lose? its buffet food, it i dont like it I will change it! so I took a scoop with a small bit of steamed rice and sat down as Sumaya told me how the English man earlier ran to get his camera to take photos because he had never seen goat before (cooked that is), I ... read more

Its 30 degrees in the UK and 23 degrees and raining in Uganda? what is going on? I am supposed to be the one boasting about the weather not you guys :) lots of noise from the bar outside the hotel so my room was moved on Monday night, I thought great I will finally get a decent nights sleep, I put the lock on the door and someone tried forcing the door open at 1am, the reception had not logged my room change and the room was given to someone else. At 2am I recieved a call, the call was to ask me why I was in the room!?! after grumpily explaining the situation, I fell back to sleep and awoke at 6am groggy and not at all ready for the day. But last night ... read more

Today Caroline (Mantrac HR Manager) picked me up at the hotel and took me to her house for lunch, I was really excited about meeting her family she told me that she wanted to show me how Ugandan people lived and wanted me to experience the Ugandan Sunday lunch. it was a pleasure. On the way to Carolines house we stopped at many traffic lights, in doing so you then attact the street sellers and the beggars to the car, on this occassion some of these happened to be small children, some of them small enough to be babies in the arms of other babies and this sight cant help but pull on the toughest of heart strings. Caroline was obviously disturbed by the sight of the children and told me how she dislikes it, she ... read more

hello, I made it safe to Kampala on our tiny prop plane that made even me eeek a few times, Mike laughed at me and said "I thought you was a flying hero" I explained that I liked flying, I just wasnt keen on prop planes... We arrived at Dar airport and my suitcase went through the scanner, not something that we do at Heathrow airport but through it went, the customs officer approached me rather brash "open your bag" I fiddled with the lock, "I said open it" she pushed, I thought blimey what is this all about? forgetting about Annie. She forced my bag up and open and rummaged through it and opened Annies bag and I smiled she then stopped, confused, and looked at it "What is this?" I explained that it was ... read more

it was exam day today, they were shaking with nerves and as evil as it sounds it was good to see - I know then that with all the fun that they have had that they are going to take it seriously... one gentleman came in shaking like a jelly in an earthquake, I sat him down and asked him how he was doing " I am good" he told me " I am prepared" so I continued "ok so you have come into the room and discovered Suitbert lying on the floor, what are you going to do?" he proceeded to ask me if he was breathing so I said "I dont know? why dont you assess him" which he did and he was doing great until .... he gave Suitbert two breaths - eeeek!!!! ... read more

Whilst on territory you have to go through a body search upon leaving for the day, generally the men get a far bigger grilling than the women. Over the last week Elizabeth has been the female security guard who has invited me into the security building or what I have started to call it – “the cuddle cabin” she calls me in there, she hugs me, slaps my bum, kisses me on the cheek and tells me she loves me ... so I respond with “I love you too sweetie and I will see you tomorrow for another cuddle” ahhhh how sweet, at least, thats what I thought each day (and I still do really) until I learnt about her tribe from Suitbert and Eustoe when we popped out to get ingredients to make fake blood. ... read more

Dar es Salaam - one of the richest and safest cities in the whole of East Africa, and to be honest parts of it looks like a run down area of Slough so you would think to live here would be great if you were an African in Tanzania and yes the people who live here love their city as do all of the people in each of their respective cities and I love this enthusiasm. A young lad, Fakim, on my course said I beleive that in 10 years Africa will be like Europe ... I will let you my reader decide Ask a Dar es Salaam resident "how do you get an ambulance?" and the answer you will get is "well it all depends on your insurance, if your insurance names your family member ... read more
