Just as we were finally getting to sleep (after the loud music had stopped & the noisy cleaning staff had finished) the alarm went off at 9am. We grabbed a Kiwi shake and walked through the Thai market to the Temples. We passed a man begging, he had black swollen legs covered in white dry skin. I think it could have been Gangreen and looked really painful. The entrance fee for the Grand Palace (59 acres with more than 100 mansions, halls and temples) was more than we'd expected and as we're on a shoestring budget, we decided only to walk around the grounds. Their souveneer shop was fantastic, more like a museum selling hand crafted items made by people in the Hill-Tribes. Next we walked to Wat Po to see the longest reclining Buddha which ... read more

Woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of horses galloping across the roof of our Bungalow. Ellie recons it was a lizzard, but I don't think they can get so big, so I'm sticking with the horse theory. Ellie felt much better after being ill for a few days, so had a pampersing session in the morning while I read my book on the Terrace again sitting on my swing seat. We got a Rickshaw (Motorbike with seats on the side, like a big basket) to the Death Railway in Kanchanaburi that crosses the River Kwai. Kwai is pronounced to rhyme with Sway not Cry. If pronounced incorrectly, it has a sexual meaning (but we're not sure what! Haven't found anyone we can ask yet). There was a guy with a Leopard ... read more

I had slept really well on the overnight coach, but Ellie hadn't at all as she's still really ill. We swapped seats so she could lean her head against the window while I (feeling guiltily refreshed) kept night watch on the coach. I was sat next to Wierd-Coughing Lady who sounded more like a dying Wolf, making peculiar wheezing noises, and the odd sneeze splattering germs everywhere. The coach company kindly handed out hot drinks and a cold flannel to all the passengers. Unfortunatly the tea was more of that powedered stuff with condensed milk that's too sweet to drink. Strangely, it also tasted of coffee and Ellie suspected they may have slung it all in together trying to please everyone. Arrived at Bangkok Bus station at 6am, navigated our way to the ticket stall for ... read more

Ellie hadn't slept well as she'd been ill with fever most of the night. We got ready and checked out by 11am, then walked up to Mr Keans tourist information centre to book our coach trip to Bangkok this evening. Along the way, we both said how many people had warned us we'd get homesick, and yet surprisingly neither of us have... not once! We may have needed the odd hug from our Mam's, and I've really missed not having Ant around, but I haven't missed England at all. Mr Kean turned in to Mr Mean and wouldn't sell us a coach ticket. He said he "didn't like us" because he'd seen us use another tour company for our James Bond Island trip yesterday. At first I thought he was joking and laughed along with him, ... read more

We were meant to check-out by 7am to make it to our bus station in time for our transfer to Ao Phang Nga. As usual, we hit the snooze button a few too many times and were running late. With our backpacks weighing us down, and morning traffick to dodge, we ran and got to the bus station just as our mini-bus arrived. We collected loads more passngers along the way. They kept cramming luggage in the back and at one point Ellie's luggage fell off the pile and on to the road. I sat next to a Hungarian guy (who I'd guess was in his mid Fifties) who insisted he ask me 20-questions despite knowing little English. I was impressed that he'd decided to learn the language at such a late age, and admired his ... read more

I'm writing these two days (11th & 12th Jan) as one entry, as they were fairly uneventful, but very enjoyable! On both days we were up early to grab a Pineapple shake before hitting the beach. We read & slept in the sun, in between intervals of eating at lunch and dinner times. Then with a full tummy, we'd head home for an early night to read before bedtime. Ellie and I are so in tune with each other, we find we're agreeing on everything, and if there are things on each of our to-do lists, we choose to do them together. We've pretty much been inseperable since we left England at the end of December, and so it's no suprise that on the evening of the 11th, we both commented on how much we liked ... read more

Was by the pier for 8.30, pleased to be leaving the superficial Ibiza atmosphere of Ko Phi Phi. Don't get me wrong, I love Ibiza, and it's likely I'll be making it over there for a third time in the summer, but we'd just got settled into traveller mode and had ditched the straighteners and make-up, so it was crap when we needed to get dressed up & make and effort to "keep up with the Jones". Boarded the ferry to Phuket and slept in the sunshine on the top deck. We saw the usual taxi touts waiting eagerly on the shore, so after asking how much they wanted (500THB), we walked up the road and flagged one for 400. You may read this and wonder why we're going to such lengths to save 100THB (the ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don January 9th 2010

Woke at 9.30 very hot and very bothered, and in dire need of some H2O. Couldn't sleep so we went for breakfast, I opted for an American breakfast in the hope that it would soak up some alcohol. We watched Thai adverts in the cafe. One was promoting Skin Whitener and showed a lad looking more and more horrified each day that passed when his girlfriend became more tanned. They made his face look cartoonish so it was very entertaining, but it was basically implying that if you have a normal dark Thai skintone, then you're hideous. Adverts must be more controlled back home, as I've never seen one so insulting. Slept off the remaining hangover. Me and Ellie have an ongoing joke about her OCD, so I laughed when she woke and said "right I'm ... read more

We had to be up; showered and packed early to catch the ferry to Ko Phi Phi. We got a banana shake then boarded the open bus for our transfer to the port. Settled on the outside deck of the ferry and basked in the morning sunshine. We stopped in the middle of the sea, and there was an announcement (which we didn't hear) then people seemed to be packing their things away and looking a bit bewildered. Was it just me or was the boat tipping??! The Captain popped his head out of the Control room and said "Excuse me, Excuse me, you must board the other boat, this boat can't balance". All the passengers formed a queue and started clambering accross to a nearby yaught. Amazing how we all remained calm and no one ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Krabi January 7th 2010

Our alarm went off at 9am, had to press snooze a couple of times before getting up, which is crazy since we had 10 hours sleep last night. Went for fruit salad and yoghurt in the cafe attached to our holiday apartment. It was raining outside so we spent the morning reading and blogging in the internet cafe nearby. Went out for lunch - the restaurant was filled with tables and benches joined together with a roof on top to look like mini Bamboo huts. Had Thai Seafood Soup, which wasn't for the squeamish as it had plenty of tenticals and tails in there, but I made my way through it... slowly. We passed a building site which had a sign saying "No Photos" - evidentaly due to Health and Safety, as the builders were balancing ... read more
