We'd slept pretty badly on the plane so treated ourselves to another few layers of fancy moisturisers at the Duty Free cosmetics counters. I chose various Dior creams and by the time I'd finished, I had probably slathered on about $40 worth. Went through numerous security checks at Melbourne airport then called Steph who told us to board the Sky Train to the city centre bus station where she was waiting for us. As soon as I spotted her, I ran over for a big hug. Steph moved to Australia with her boyfriend Graeme last year and I've not seen her for 7 months. Introduced Ellie, although they have already spoken a few times on Facebook. Graeme was at their apartment when we arrived, nursing a hangover after a 3-day Bender with his lad mates. Steph ... read more

Got up at 5am to get our taxi to the Ho Chi Minh City airport. We weren't sorry to be leaving Vietnam, or the unfriendly people, but were sad it was the first part of our trip now complete and in the past. The lady on the Check-In desk forgot to give us a departure card, and we weren't aware we'd need one from her, so we were irritated when the staff at Passport Security made us go all the way back to the desk (through Baggage Control and everything) to collect one. They should have spares kept at Passport Security in case the Check-In staff forget to do their job properly. Had Tea and a Banana Muffin (served hot and soggy) at a Lily Coffee shop for breakfast, before boarding the short flight to Bangkok. ... read more

It was fortunate we weren't too hungover as we had a lot to pack in today. Went for breakfast at 11am at Bobby Brewers then got push-bike carts to the War Remnants Museum. The two old men who took us there conveniently forgot the museum shuts over lunch so when we arrived at 12, we were told we'd have to wait for an hour and a half to get in. Most taxi drivers would know this surely? Went for a fruit shake in a coffee shop not far away then went back at 1.30. They had planes, tanks, hellicopters and rocket launchers outside, and photos with captions on the walls inside the building. Some of the photos were particularly sad. One photo, of an old man crouched down looking frightened, brought tears to my eyes. The ... read more

Had fruit salads in Milwaukee Bar & Grill then headed off on Motorbike taxis to The Majestic for another lazy day by the pool. There was an evil woman staying there with her Husband that kept shooting us death stares like she wanted to slit our throats. She was horrific! She watched me doing lengths and I was overcome by the urge to do something childish like stick my tongue out at her, or give her the two finger salute. Silly old bat. Had lunch in the Restaurant opposite the hotel but it wasn't great. On the way home that afternoon we stopped at a Vietnamese market (which mainly sells fruit, veg and household goods to the locals) and picked up a couple of nail varnishes - the same super strength stuff our beauticians used for ... read more

Enjoyed fruit salad for breakfast at a Roadside Cafe and were approached by some old men who run tours on their push-bike carts (they pedal away and can fit one or two people in their carriage). They don't have Tuk Tuks in Vietnam; people mainly drive Motorbikes or Push Bikes and we've heard there are about 8million Motorbikes in Ho Chi Minh City alone! We try not to get involved with street sellers because there are so many of them and we can't help them all - no matter how cheap their items or tours are! However, it's really hard to say no to these old men with the bikes, as the look of disappointment on their faces is intense. Next minute we had a cart each and were being taken to a hotel with a ... read more

Checked out and the owner of 'Same, Same' Guesthouse walked us up the road to make sure we were picked up by our transfer on time. The staff have been brilliant there! A guy with a walky-talky arrived and we chatted to a girl from Croydon called Amy all the way to the bus station. Her and her boyfriend had accidentally worn exactly the same colour today, so we named them The Purple Couple. When we arrived at the bus station, lots of uniformed staff were on hand to help us with our luggage and to find out seats. Each person had a bottle of water stuffed in to their seat pocket already, to save them having to wobble down the coach handing them out when it set off. Simple things like this makes them appear ... read more

Had breakfast at our Guesthouse before setting off with a nice guy (who called himself Mr Bo) who was our Tuk Tuk driver for the day. He took us to the S21 Museum which was originally a high school but was turned in to a prision when the Khmer Rouge regime began in 1975. The Khmer Rouge, (a communist party led by Pol Pot), had won the civil war in 1975 and over the next 4 years they forced people living in the city to move to the countryside to work in horrific conditions. They wanted to eliminate suspected capatalists, so set up the prison to torture and execute people, especially if they were well educated or had links to foreign governments. We watched a film detailing what had happened during the 4 years and it ... read more

Our alarm went off at 5.45 and we were downstairs, ready for our taxi (to the bus station) a few minutes early. By 7.15 the taxi still hadn't arrived and since we were meant to be boarding a coach at 7.30, we asked our Guesthouse reception to chase it up. The Travel office we'd book the journey with had forgotten to book our taxi, and after a lot of faffing about, one eventually picked us up at 7.45. We'd decided we must have already missed our coach, so could only hope they'd had the sense to book us on the next available one, for free. When we arrived at the station, the staff waved us on the bus and we were surpirsed to find our original seats were still available. The ticket man accepted our tickets ... read more

Had breakfast in Soup Dragon then went on a mission to Angkor Holiday hotel which we'd heard lets you pay to use it's pool. When we eventually arrived the staff explained the pool area is in the shade until 2pm. Got a motorbike taxi back to the area where we're staying and spotted Terraces des Elephants hotel which had a sign for a Rooftop Pool. The hotel was amazing and had a wide staircase leading up to the other floors, which wouldn't have looked out of place on The Titanic. We raced each other up it to find the rooftop pool surrounded by tropical plants, hanging seats and comfy loungers. Their menu was fab too and I had beef skewers with salad for about $5. We loved the staff who were really freindly and spoke English ... read more

We did our research for Cambodia in an Internet cafe on the way to breakfast in The French Quarter in Siem Reap. The French Quarter is full of nice restaurants, trendy bars and souveneer shops (not the ones selling keyrings and fridge magnets like Blackpool, but lovely carved photo frames and beautiful pottery. We agreed a day tour price with our Tuk Tuk driver from last night ($15 between us) and he took us to buy our day pass for all the Temples ($20) where they took our photo and printed it on an ID card. In Cambodia you can pay for everything in US Dollars, or in their local currency Riel. Our first stop was Angkor Wat which is a temple complex built in the 12th century for the King.
