It was still dark at 5.30am when we got dropped off at Pakse in Laos. We had been quite settled on the Sleeper Coach and hadn't expected to be hauled off half-asleep :-( While we were waiting at the bus station, a hippy girl was handing out slices of Dragon Fruit, which is a really unusual fruit with a white middle with black seeds, and it's texture I think is a lot like Watermelon. We had done loads of research for Thailand but had fallen a little behind with the other countries so we made it our mission to research Cambodia as soon as we arrived at our hotel late-afternoon. To be fair we'd always planned for Laos to be a chilled out boozy trip, but I think if we'd done some research before we arrived, ... read more

Was up early to get showered, pack our things and do some shopping in Laos before our Coach left for Cambodia. Stocked up on flipflops, sunglasses etc then found another Friends bar for a quick breakfast before our departure. We were gutted we hadn't dscovered this one earlier, as the menu and service was sooo much better than the Friends bar on the corner... they even do deserts (which we've not come accross since arriving here). Collected our backpacks from the Guesthouse and walked to the Travel office nearby. I accidentally walked barefoot through cement outside the Tubing office - ha! What a way to leave my mark! Had to quickly run back to the Guesthouse to wash my feet before the cement set. Got crammed on to a hot minibus, then dropped at the bus ... read more

The day following the Mushroom episode was fairly short. Tried to sleep as much as much as possible so the effects would wear off, but felt a little spaced out all day. El and I went for a fruit salad in a quiet restaurant mid afternoon (was craving vitamins), then read our books in our room not wanting to face the sun or the public. The day after, we were up early and out doing errands by 10am. We booked our VIP coach to Cambodia - cost us 40quid... just when we'd got used to paying 10 for long journeys! At least we're confident it will be a nice coach! We also handed over our passports (so he could arrange our Cambodian VISA's) and he told us we'd need to collect them from Vientiane (along the ... read more

Well where do I start..? Erm, with Whiskey buckets for breakfast I think. We headed to Friends Bar for a warm up drink and some toast. The Laos Whiskey is really nice over here mixed with Red Bull and Coke or Lemonade - I usually hate Whiskey back home. Went to the Tubing office and paid for the Tube rental and a deposit, and they packed us off in a Pick-up Taxi to the start of the River. The idea of Tubing is that you float down a river in a Rubber Inner Tube to get to various bars along the way. They also have zip wires and swings for people to fly off into the sky and into the water. Got chatting to some people in the taxi who'd been Tubing the other day - ... read more

We were woken up by the driver at 3am who said we'd arrived at our destination and must leave the coach. We were sleepy and confused, as we weren't meant to arrive until 4.30am. This meant there were no coach connections to the boarder, so we had to team up with a softly spoken German girl called Leah to get a taxi. She was lovely and sat with us when we arrived at the boarder and had to wait 2 hours for it to open. It wasn't half as bad as it sounds, we were all quite happy sharing travelling stories and writing up our journals. Eventually the boarder opened at 6am so we walked to the passport office, signed our Thai deparure cards and boarded a coach across the Thai-Laos friendship bridge to the Laos ... read more

There's really not a lot to say about the 22nd except that I woke up with a killer hangover and rotted in bed all afternoon. I vom'd numerous times, couldn't face drinking water, had a walk in the fresh air, and attempted to eat some pasta (in Art cafe with El at about 8pm), but hit a whitey and vom'd again. It was horrific and I'd convinced myself I would never touch a drop of Alcohol ever again in my entire life. We had meant to leave Chiang Mai yesterday, but had to put plans on hold until I could stomach the thought of another coach journey. Fast forward 12hours to the 23rd, and I was bright as a button after sleeping from 9pm the previous evening. Had breakfast in a trendy place not far from ... read more

Woke up at 8.30 to the sounds of the lads next door getting in from their night out. Yesterday one of El's bikini's had gone missing, so I marched out (still a bit tipsy from the night before) and stuck a grumpy face out to speak to them. They promissed they hadn't taken it, then one of them kept knocking until we agreed to go for a drink with them... so at 8.30 we slung on some clothes and went out in last nights make up. The Scouser was called Mark, the Welsh lad called Tom and Alex was French Canadian. No bars were open so we picked up some take outs from a shop nearby. El has wanted another tattoo ever since we arrived in Thailand, and since it was our last day (or supposed ... read more

Wandered to find somewhere for breakfast and came across Art Cafe, an International place specialising in French, Mexican and Italian. We both said how gutted we were that it was our last full day and night in Thailand, but we planned to make it a good one by having a few drinks to my Dad who passed away 2 years ago today. Ellie treated me to a lovely breakfast - we had fresh strawberry juice, a croissant with homemade jam and somethng called Big Bowl Florentine (scrambled egg, spinach, shredded bacon, chopped tomatoes and mozzerella cheese slung in to a bowl on top of cottage potatoes). Yum! Nipped in a book shop, (El's flying through books like you wouldn't believe, think she's on her 7th now), then found a hotel called Lai Thai where you can ... read more

Our minibus collected us for our daytrip at 8.30am. There were 6 other people in our group: an Italian couple Massimo & Savanna; a French Canadian called Lisa; Susanna from Slovakia; and a Chinese couple Lu-Lu and Luó jié... aka Roger. Everyone spoke English and told us about their home towns and their jobs. Lu-Lu & Roger (both Art tachers in China) told us about an Explosion that was due to happen in Shanghai and London in 2010. He looked at our confused, panicked faces, then laughed and corrected his mistake. He'd meant Exhibition. First stop was a Butterfly & Orchid farm. The Butterflies must be so used to people taking photos as they didn't fly away or hide. Next we went to a Hill-Tribe village to meet the Long-Necked women, with heavy coils around their ... read more

We'd slept badly again, but eventually we arrived in Chiang Mai at 7am and were dropped off at a great Guest House called Namkhong. We paid 250THB between us and it was one of the best rooms we've had... yes we've had some shockers thinking back to the Jungle Shack (aka Spider Sanctuary), but still... The lady on Reception called Noo was brilliant and it was nice to be fussed over, she was like a Mother Hen. She sold us a daytrip for tomorrow (1,200THB - about 24quid) that includes White-Water rafting; Elephant trekking; and meeting the Long-Necked Women in the Hill-tribes. She was so knowledgable and was able to rattle off coach times and prices (for our travel to Laos) off the top of her head. We had a fruit salad & yogurt for breakfast ... read more
