Geo: 41.6167, 1.85Within 30 minutes of waking we decided to just get up and go to Montserrat; A mountaintop monastery. It was a fair journey from the city centre, about 90 minutes from Barcelona. The day ticket cost us 26€, which was excellent value really, including daily metro ticket, 70 minute regional rail journey, 20 minute cogwheel train up the mountain, entry to the monastery and a steep cogwheel train to the mountaintop. The first cogwheel train takes you to the midlevel, where we explored the monastery, enjoyed a cafe lunch and decent views of the countryside. Next, we boarded the second steep cogwheel rail, taking you up on about a 45 degree angle to the top level. From here we embarked on a 30 or 40 minute walk to the actual summit. The views on ... read more

Geo: 41.3879, 2.16992An 11pm kick off. One of the worlds best football teams, in one of the worlds most famous football stadiums in front of around 80,000 fanatical fans. It was an amazing atmosphere and spectacle to behold. A shame about the lack of goals and an uncharacteristically 'Messy' penalty. You would have got long odds for a Barcelona game to finish 0-0 at the Nou Camp and Lionel Messi to miss a penalty. None the less, it was a great experience to see FC Barcelona play with the likes of Messi, Xavi, Fabregas, Iniesta, Neymar and Villa running around. Even Nat enjoyed herself and thats saying something. I might have finally got her into enjoying beer, but Ive still alot of work to do to make her a football fan. The day started at a ... read more

Geo: 41.3879, 2.16992We are just about to turn in for our second of four nights in Barcelona. Its been a bit of hit and miss thus far. Theres lots to think about atm, and plenty of things to plan and consider before our cruise departs on Friday. The bad so far, is we will be missing la Tomatina. Its largely booked out, aside from a few overpriced tours leaving at 3am tomorrow. The good, is instead, Iv booked tickets to see Barcelona FC play at the Camp Nou tomorrow night. Unfortunately, we've been unable to catch up with Matt and Jas also. With them now going overnight to Valencia, we may only see them for one day on the 29th.Our arrival in Barcelona yesterday, on Monday all went smoothly. Checking out in Geneva was no problem. ... read more

Geo: 45.9253, 6.86979What a great way to celebrate our four month travel anniversary! Todays expedition to the top of Mount Blanc, the highest point in Western Europe, would prove to be one of the most memorable of our trip. It didn't start perfectly. We were up at 7, to get up, get ready and find the departure spot for our tour. Nat obtained directions from Google. They werent remotely helpful. We wandered aimlessly, only finding the spot thanks to assistance from locals. On the bus, it didn't take long to discover our 'tour' was actually pretty crappy. The guide wouldn't accompany us anywhere really, and just take us to locations, with a bunch of erratic directions and guidelines in broken English. It was an English speaking tour. What was a fail in tour terms, we made ... read more

Geo: 46.2038, 6.13996We woke to a wet and cloudy Interlaken morning. The weather had certainly taken a turn for the worse. We checked out from Tent City around 10am, and made our way to the train station by bus. Again, our train ride was fairly comfortable and straight forward with one brief transfer in Bern. Scenery wise it was average, wet, raining, through fields and small towns. With little else on the agenda, todays mission was to watch Arsenal vs Fulham at an English pub on arrival in Geneva. I had researched a British pub, checked they were showing the match and made directions to get there by tram from the station. It all went so well, we arrived in Geneva on time, 30 minutes before kick off. We found the tram, and it dropped us right ... read more

Geo: 46.6855, 7.8559Todays title I saw on a map of the area of Interlaken. Its a fair description of this beautiful place. I figure you would struggle to design a more picturesque perfect scenic town. Nestled in a valley, between two still aqua blue lakes, surrounded by towering mountains, covered in thick green woodland, with the sights of whitecaps and glaciers, under a warming bright sun and blue skies.Turns out, theres no domestic intercity buses in Switzerland? The con of this, is train travel is painfully expensive. The trip from Zurich to Interlaken, via a stop in Lucern, costing us around $110AUD for the two of us for a few hour journey. The pro, is the trains are excellent. The route was also amazingly scenic, giving us great mountain views and lake views coming into Interlaken. ... read more

Geo: 47.0457, 8.30824A real candidate for the most spectacular scenic day of our trip, and that's saying something. It didn't come cheap, but it was well worth it. Today, we saw what Switzerland has to offer. 7 years ago, I ascended Mount Pilatus, on the worlds steepest railway. It was a pretty awesome experience, but paled in comparison to the magnificence of the awkwardly named Mount Titlis (and yes, that is how you pronounce it). For todays experience, we booked a full day tour with Viator. The tour also gave us the opportunity to explore the beautiful city of Lucerne. We boarded the bus from the Zurich Coach terminal. Half the passengers having chosen Pilatus as their destination, the other half going with the Titlis option. We arrived in Lucerne around 11, stopping to view the ... read more

Geo: 47.3667, 8.55After the general mediocrity of recent train experiences, today was a welcome and refreshing trip. Day travel is a million times better than overnight. The train was excellent, heaps of room, leather seats and tray tables. The journey itself was very scenic. The countryside between Vienna and Zurich was lush and green. We were treated to aqua blue lakes, rolling hills and towering mountains. It was better than a flight and 7 hours flew by really. The walk from the station to our accommodation didn't. 30 minutes, through a slumming neighborhood wearing our packs. Given the price of Zurich, we picked a guesthouse that fitted our budget. We were pleasantly surprised. With no reception, we obtained our key by entering a code in a security box. The room, for a 2 star was an ... read more

Geo: 48.3833, 15.5167Its been my longest trip ever. Today marks my hundredth blog entry of the trip; Over 20,000 words, over 1,000 photos uploaded, four months, eighteen counties, so far, by plane, train, car, ship and bus. Its not been easy at times, its time consuming especially via my Android tablet. Ultimately, worthwhile though, to document the detail of this worthy adventure. We've met new people, tasted new things, heard new languages, seen amazing places and experienced enough for a lifetime! Today was just another great experience. Cycling, beautiful scenery, swimming and wine tasting. Its a winning combination! We met up with the days tour group in the north of Vienna at 9am. It was a small, dual nationality group; 9 Americans and 7 Australians, which made communication pretty easy. One American couple was in their ... read more

Geo: 48.22, 16.37'The-Hungary-Special-Ultimate-Leave-Hotel-In-Budapest-Fun-Tax-for-Tourist' tax. Budapest wouldn't let us leave without one last subtle mugging. Once that unpleasantness was complete, we boarded a westbound train towards Budapest's Coach terminal. Here we would be boarding an 'Orangeways' bus bound for Vienna. Or so we thought we would depart from the coach station. Orangeways are too budget for that. Rather, their 'pickup spot' was across the road, denoted by a faded poster, blowing in the wind, before a construction site, as tumbleweeds blew by. The bus ride itself, was bearable enough. It was cosy, but air conditioned and 3 hours later we were to arrive in Vienna. On first glimpse, the city itself seemed somewhat underwhelming. We found the nearest U-Bahn station and made the short trip from the city centre to Langenfeldgasse in the so... read more
