Geo: 52.2163, 5.96462Het Loo Palace is imbued with the lives and history of the Dutch Royal family. It was the favorite place of William III and Mary II, and later Queen Wilhelmina. On a beautiful warm day like today, its not hard to see why. Natalie and I have visited many castles, royal residences and palaces since our arrival in Europe. We were both in agreement, that todays visit to Het Loo may have just about been our favorite of the lot so far. Whether it was the perfect weather, excellent audio tour, intriguing history, relatively low crowds or beautiful green gardens that made it so enjoyable, were heading home happy. We arrived around 1pm after lunch, and three or four happy hours just rolled by. On arrival, we noted the majority of text and information ... read more

Geo: 52.9244, 6.79119Our first day out with the Vonks, and a casual 380 kilometers covered. From Heteren, northbound, first to the town of Orvelte. This was a historic Dutch community, largely untouched from the 1800s onwards. We enjoyed a packed lunch then set off to explore the village, complete with cobblestone roads and homes with thatched rooves. We took a tour of an open residence, with a friendly and informative guide in a small group. We learned of the life of a wealthy Boer/farming family. From furniture, firewood and sleeping arrangements to chamber pots, witches balls and preserving food, it was all interesting stuff. The tour was nicely supplemented by a film in a stable coverted to theatre. Whilst in Dutch, we could follow much of the plot, of an American lady travelling to Orvelte to ... read more

Geo: 51.8112, 4.66814To Jan and Joke, please find enclosed one Australian couple, from Jan, Lina and Marielle. Sadly, its that time again. Saying goodbye to a place, storing experience to memory, saying goodbye to people, and of course, packing our packs. Its sad to move from a place we have enjoyed so, but all there is to do is look forward to new experiences and fun times ahead. We have another full week in Holland. Ive just booked a train trip from Amsterdam to Berlin, next Friday the 26th at 3pm. We will spend three nights there, then on to Munich. We enjoyed a casual start to our final day today, and tasty breakfast. Scrambled eggs, cheese, mouses, eggcakes and roggebrod. I didn't much fancy the latter. After breakfast it was time to do something about ... read more

Geo: 50.8498, 5.6872618/7 Its been a huge week. Today was a fitting Grand Finale to our visit with the Struik family, I mean we're driving through Belgium right now. From Hendrik Ido Ambacht to Valkenberg, Maastrict, Antwerp and back, even touching briefly on German territory. We started early, around 8, and were getting back late, some 13-14 hours later. Not only has it been a long day, but also a scorcher by Dutch standards. Blue skies and 33C. Whew!It started in Valkenberg, about two hours from home, arriving around 10.30. By 11, we had joined a tour of the coal mine at Steenkolenmijn. It was a interesting and lengthy tour, taking you deep underground on an 80 minute circuit. Tragically, it was all in Dutch. Jan and Marielle helped translate bits and pieces, and an English ... read more

Geo: 51.5014, 3.6149Our departure this morning was delayed. After breakfast, Jan spent most of the morning calling government authorities and archivists to help reveal my family history. Many things were revealed and confirmed. My research was correct. We confirmed Opas mother, her spouse, and the siblings of Opa. We also learned more of the Mallegroms. The identity of my great grandfather is still in dispute, as he is listed as unknown on Opas birth certificate. Only the author of the archive data I have, or Opas brother/half brother may know the full story. With a head racing with speculation and information we set off to Zeeland around lunch. By 1pm, we arrived at Oostershelde Dyke Bridge/ Water control gate which separates the sea from the lakes of South East Holland. The lakes are currently above sea level, ... read more

Geo: 52.4949, 5.07119We are on the way back from Voldendam now, stuck in a traffic jam. Ive just woke from a snooze. Its been another busy and beautiful sunny day, and we've all got a bit of sunburn. We started a bit earlier today, on the road by half past eight. It took around 90 minutes to make the drive from Hendrik Ido Ambacht. Marielle had helped Jan plan some things for todays adventure. After parking the car, a short walk had us in Volendam, an old and pretty town on the waterfront. Once the South Sea separated Volendam and Marken, but now with new dykes being built, the salt water has become fresh and these are fishing villages no longer. We took a ship from Volendam to cross over to Marken. The trip took around ... read more

Geo: 51.8664, 4.66181Beautiful warm sunshine, pretty scenery, good exercise and a nice tour of my Dutch roots and family history. It was also a return visit to some places I visited 7 years ago. Were home now, my rump thankful for the comforting soft of the couch after a full day, some 30 kilometres on the saddle of a bicycle. Our departure was a bit delayed after getting up late, mousses for breakfast and contacting home. I spoke to mum for the first time since leaving Australia, and likewise Natalie her parents on Skype. We climbed aboard the bikes around noon, mine equipped with a beautiful pink luggage basket. The good thing about Holland, is its flat, making bike riding much easier! First stop off was Hooftwijk. Here on this street is where Opa and my dad ... read more

Geo: 51.9226, 4.47075Another full day today exploring the city of Rotterdam. Rather than drive into the city, we parked near home in Hendrik Ido Ambacht and boarded a waterbus. The waterbus isn't perhaps as true to its name as todays evening activity, but more on that later. Rather, its a ferry, and a different hassle free method of transport into Rotterdam. Like so many times before, we picked up a city discount pass; The Rotterdam Card. This was similar to Stockholm or Copenhagen in that it offered free public transport. It was cheaper than other cards, but rather than offer free accommodation to tourist attractions it gave discounts.A short metro ride from the Tourist Information Stand to Blaak station and we were at the Kubus Woningen homes. Designed by Dutch Architect Piet Blom, these are homes ... read more

Geo: 52.0783, 4.31365Our first full day in Holland was a busy one! With Lina busy today, Jan, Marielle, Nat and I climbed into the car around 10am, bound for Delft. What a pretty town it was. We spent some time exploring. Alongside little cafes, shops, canals and little bridges. We passed an impressive music machine in the street; a real one man band, powered by a motor. It wasn't long before we arrived at the base of the Delft Cathedral, the Nieuwe Kerk, completed in 1496. It was a really impressive church, relatively narrow given the height of its huge tower, standing nearly 110 metres tall and dominating the Delft skyline. The cathedral had a beautiful interior, with plenty of light, ornate chandeliers and nice stained glass windows. The Nieuwe Kerk (new church) also serves as ... read more

Geo: 51.8442, 4.63889Up at 5.15am. Out of the Clarion hotel by 5.30. At the train station by 5.45. On an express rocket train to Oslo airport at 6. At the airport by 6.25. Checked in, and aboard an SAS 737 bound for Amsterdam by 7.50am. Everything went according to plan. Being too early for breakfast, our hotel even presented us with a packed breakfast bag at our checkout. A lovely gesture. If only the food had been edible. The bread was so dry, I feel dehydrated just thinking about it.We touched down in Schiphol around 9.30am. We collected our bags, eventually, and came through customs to a warm welcome from Jan and Marielle who were kind enough to collect us.
