Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097Finally, Natalie has been delivered safely to Paris, our last planned solo destination. The safe part is a relief, given our choice of airline; Transavia. Yeah, who? They are a Dutch based airline operating independently under the Air France-KLM Group. Getting to Marco Polo airport was no problem. We hiked from our room to checkout, grabbed our packs and boarded a pre booked coach to the airport. The flight went smoothly, again after an expected frisking heading through security.Upon arrival in Paris Orly, we finally got to use some wifi. We found our planned cruise hopes dashed, as the tour agent had now sold out the tickets. Great, more rescheduling.Getting to Paris from Orly took a while, but was relatively straight forward, apart from a stupid lack of ticketing for metro trains? Our hotel ... read more

Geo: 45.4345, 12.3384We find ourselves in beautiful Venice, trying to focus on today, and not the stressful decisions of the next few days. More on that in a minute. Having left our cruise behind, we were on our own here for a night before our flight to Paris. Our accommodation here turned out to be pretty special and unique. It was a further 20 minute walk from the check in reception. We left our packs, and took just day/night bags on a hike through Venice in search of our room. Over several bridges, canals and winding streets we eventually came to a multistory dwelling down a side street. Three keys got us through the entry, up stairs and a gate to our small Venetian room, with a beautiful window view of the canals below. We spend the ... read more

Geo: 45.4345, 12.3384Tonight will be our last aboard the Carnival Sunshine. 9 nights have flown by. Arrival at our cruises final destination in Venice was spectacular in itself, sailing by islands and enjoying a beautiful view of the city. For me, Venice was clearly my favourite of Italian cities visited, pretty and unique in its setting. A noon arrival today allowed for a sleep in and slow start, including a breakfast in bed from Natalie. Lucky me! Once the gangway was finally organised, we set out to explore Venice by foot on our own. It proved to be a long hot day of walking. Tragically, we were one of six large cruise ships here, and as a result the city streets were befouled by excessive hoardes of tourists. The walk from the ship took us through Roma ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik September 6th 2013

Geo: 42.6537, 18.0948Before our day in Dubrovnik, we had a full day at sea to finally get a bit of rest. Today consisted of a late breakfast, swim and games. We met an appointment for a challenge for a game of Scrabble with American couple Pete and Audrey. As expected, we lost. At dinner, a formal night we met a lovely couple from Manchester, Rick and Paula. Ricks father used to be director of Manchester United. No big deal.As it turned out, Dubrovnik turned out to be our favourite city on the cruise, and Eastern Europe in general. We toured it ourselves, getting a shuttle bus from the pier to Old Town. It wasn't a particularly monument heavy city, just a pretty one. We walked through the city, to the waterfront where we elected to go ... read more

Europe » Italy » Sicily » Messina September 4th 2013

Geo: 38.1922, 15.5566This morning we docked by Messina, on the island of Sicily. Today was to be our last organized tour with Carnival cruises. It was to be the cheapest and simplest of tours, but a worthwhile and enjoyable one to Mount Edna, the tallest active volcano in Europe. We set off at around 8.30am, on a good two hour drive. We first were pointed out some sights of Messina before getting out on the freeway. After the disappointment of yesterday, I enjoyed todays pretty drive, touring the scenic Sicilian countryside. It was at least as pretty as Tuscany, if not more so. The drive took us along the coastline, through tunnels and small villages to the base of Mount Edna. Our experience here was far superior to yesterdays Mount Vesuvius. There was plenty of volcanic ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Naples September 3rd 2013

Geo: 40.84, 14.2529People say Napoli is one of the worlds prettiest cities. It not. In fact, its probably not in the prettiest 723,576. By third world standards, it might come in as average. Its dirty, really dirty. Buildings are in disrepair, stained, and delapitated really. It lacks class, real culture and credibility in my opinion. Parts of it are poor, and that's one thing, but others just seem lazy or careless, like they couldn't be bothered using bins, and just chucked the remainder of their half eaten pizza slice at the wall. Theres more garbage strewn about than grass here. Our objective and ultimate destination for the day was the ruins of the Roman City Pompeii, laid waste by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, some thousands of years ago. We got there, but not before a couple ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome September 2nd 2013

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823Is it impossible to see Rome and Vatican City in just one day? Yes. Having said that, todays tour had a fair whack at it. Our 10 hour expedition felt like enough by the time we were done. We started off at 7am at the port of Civitavecchia around 90 minutes drive from the Eternal City. The drive through a dusty desolate countryside was hardly breathtaking. We stopped off for a thrilling bathroom stop including an intense public affection display outside the toilets, and forced adventure into the mens room for Natalie. From there, time to marvel at the history of Rome. What symbolizes Rome better than the Colosseum? This was our first stop passing the Circus Maximus and Constatines Arch along the way. It was actually a great guided tour here, taking us ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Livorno September 1st 2013

Geo: 43.5519, 10.308Today, our first of four tours booked for our Mediterranean cruise. Our first stop in Italy was Livorno. After disembarking, and boarding our tour bus, we set off to the nearby city of Pisa. Its not hard to guess why. The leaning tower of Pisa draws thousands of people every day. The tower doesn't stand alone, but rather as one of four buildings within the 'Miracle Square' along with a dome chapel, cathedral and crypt. The Dome of the chapel was impressive, along with an audio demonstration of the effect of echo within. The cathedral was largely off limits due to Sunday mass, but we still managed a quick look inside.Next on to the main event, the leaning tower, which certainly justifies its title. Standing at around 55 metres, the tower titles 4 metres ... read more

Geo: 43.2983, 5.38322First stop, Marseille. We woke around 8, enjoyed a buffet breakfast, and headed out to explore the city. It was a beautiful sunny day, not a cloud in the sky. What wasn't beautiful was 14€ each (return) for the shuttle from the ship to the city. With no option, we had to take it. We spent a few hours exploring on foot. The city is really pretty, with a Mediterranean feel, white stone buildings by the seaside with plenty of yachts docked. We were pleased to find entry to the cathedrals here was free, as we visited three. The first, and my favorite was the Les Cathedrales de la Major. It was grand, huge and ornate, with a large dome. The interior and stained glass windows took on a more pastel, soft colour than ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona August 30th 2013

Geo: 41.3879, 2.16992Our third cruise ship of this trip. Not one we had initially planned. It turned out to be convenient, getting us around Italy, departing Barcelona on the right date for a lastminute half price deal. We have 9 nights ahead of us on the Carnival Sunshine cruise ship, with stops in Marseille, France, 5 stops in Italy; Livorno, Naples, Rome, Sicily and Venice, as well as one stop in Croatia at Dubrovnik. All in all its arguably the best ship of the three. Just refurbished in April 2013, everything is pretty modern and quality. Its not quite as big as Adventure of the Seas, but just about as grand. Its a nice design too, with plenty to keep us entertained; two outdoor swimming pools, three outdoor spas, an over 21 sundeck, plenty of bars ... read more
