Geo: 36.7899, 10.21The Tunisia National Museum and city centre bazaar and marketplace. These were todays activities on our last day in North Africa. Again, we had little option but to take the dreaded taxi. It was a similar arrangement to yesterday, a driver arranged with the hotel who would pick us up and drop us off at each location, and return us back in due course. It was a little more expensive than yesterday, caused mainly by a longer drive to reach the museum. Overall, the day was not as enjoyable as yesterday. Less history and impressive things to look at, alot of haggling and a driver that spoke even less English. Todays driver Othman, still did a good job, but there was little room for small talk or charades. We discovered we had better chance ... read more

Geo: 36.8565, 10.3306What a fantastic day in Tunisia. Carthage was the centre of the Carthaginian Empire in antiquity. The city has existed for nearly 3,000 years, developing from a Phoenician colony of the 1st millennium BC into the capital of an ancient empire. This city was a major draw card in my decision to visit Tunisia. We had hoped the ruins might be walking or public transport distance from our hotel, but alas it didn't really seem to be the case. The hotel recommended we do a tour with a cab. Oh boy, here comes rip off city. Fortunately this wasn't the case. We had a great day out thanks to the guidance of our Tunisian cab driver come guide, Nourah. The hotel recommended him as their best English speaking guide. His English vocabulary and understanding ... read more

Geo: 36.819, 10.1658Why not? Only a couple weeks until we start heading home, so an opportunity to see something different. Its not like its hard, far or expensive from Europe. Ive seen Dubai, and Southern Africa but never anything in Northern Africa. I expected Tunisia to be somewhere between the two. I also thought it would be cool to see the ruins of Carthage. It was a hastily planned expedition, booking flights and accommodation within 36 hours of departure. Information on Visas vague. Not required for Dutch passport holders. Great. Required for Australians, but you probably can get it on arrival. Reports of the cost of this varied from $1AUD to $300AUD. OK then. Vaccinations recommended, yep both covered. Booking our flight with Tunisair was awkward, thanks to the pathetic quality of the well known flight search ... read more

Geo: 51.054, 3.72169Belgian beer tasting at Europes longest bar. When Nele told me she had obtained free tickets I was drooling with anticipation. With Bert and Nele having to work, and the Jaarbeurs Exhibition finishing up this week, we decided to find our way there alone. After all, it sounded too good to miss! We walked to the nearest bus stop, caught the bus to Aalst, a return train to Gent and tram from Gent to Flanders Exhibition. We handed over tickets, ready for beer to be greeted by Nepalese dancers and a seemingly endless furniture exhibition. Ah, is this the right place? The hunt for beer begins! A room to our left, a chance perhaps! Ham, cheese, wine tasting, candy, pies. This is not beer! Care to try some wine? Well sure, if we must, ... read more

Geo: 51.054, 3.72169Wow, it has been an extremely intense and stressful couple of days for us. Whilst Bert and Nele have been at work, we have spent every second trying to look for short term work, house sitting options, or a decent plan how and when to return home. We were keen to work until November, to get a cruise back to Australia from Italy November 5. We are exhausted and need rest. We've looked at a million jobs, the most appealing being short term hospitality jobs that offer accommodation and meals. The pay for these would be next to nothing, and not really enjoyable, career building or valuable experience. They wouldn't allow us to repay debts or save anything. Many require commitment of 6 months, or at least 3, and I feel returning to better ... read more

Geo: 50.9375, 4.04108Eventually, we found our friends Bert and Nele at Brussels Midi Bus Terminal. Our Eurolines bus driver didn't make it easy. Even when boarding in Paris, he didn't appear particularly helpful, yelling at a English speaking passenger in French who had asked a question. Our bus arrived somewhere in Brussels around 5. There was no announcement whatsoever as to where we were, nor signs to indicate. Most of the passengers climbed off, so we followed suit, assuming we were at Brussels Midi, the main station and where we were to meet our friends. After looking around we determined we were actually at Brussels Nord station. When we returned to the bus, and explained this to the driver, showing our tickets he was completely disinterested. He even ignored us, tending to others mid query. He ... read more

Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097Montmarte. Just dont go there. Ever. Legend has it, it was once a place of beauty, a scenic village where artists lived, inspired by a picturesque view of Paris. No longer. Today, Montemarte serves as a classic example of the ravages of tourism. Its not the first time on our travels that Nat and I have been disgusted at what hoardes of naive tourists can do to a place, trampling people with iphones, tablets and flashes, tactless and tastelessly squandering money and creating a nuisance of themselves. Yes, Nat and I are tourists. We take photos. We are always careful, respectful and mindful of our surroundings, people and other cultures. We obey the rules, experience and appreciate where we are, and leave with fond memories and a few carefully taken photos. If I have to ... read more

Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097Today a visit to one of the largest and arguably the most famous museum in the world, the Louvre. They say that if you looked at every piece of art in the Louvre for 30 seconds without any breaks, it would take you 100 days to see it all. Well, we walked pretty much the whole thing in around 6 hours. Needless to say, we didn't look at every piece of art. We browsed, and stopped at famous pieces, or whenever anything would catch our eye or take our fancy. If there was an exam at the end, we would have scored probably between 1 and 5%. The museum is huge, divided into three sectors, across four levels, beneath the famous glass pyramid above the centre. It was a good day to be indoors, ... read more

Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097Pantheoneonome Paris fundamentals. The Arc de Triomphe, the Opera Garnier, Notre Dame, and the Panthéon making for a full afternoon. We started a bit later today, exhausted from yesterdays Disney experience. By noon we were up and about, a baguette brunch again on the menu. Our first train ride took us west to the Arc de Triomphe. It stands in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle at the western end of the Champs-Élysées. Completed in 1836, this monument honours those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and the Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Beneath its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I. Its also just impressive to look at, and ... read more

Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097Two neighboring theme parks in one day. First into Walt Disney Studios at 10am, out by 2pm, next door to Disneyland Paris, there until closing at 9pm. 11 hours of fun that really flew by. It was a great day, far superior to Disneyland Hong Kong and comparable to the one in America. Overall with good planning, a bit of luck and a small crowd, we squeezed in 15 rides (3 we got to ride twice), 3 shows (Armageddon Special effects, Car Stunt Show and Disney Dreams), 2 parades, lunch, dinner, Alice in Wonderlands hedge maze and Adventure Island. We started off in Walt Disney Studios, the smaller of the two parks, and headed straight for the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, the tallest building in the park, taking you up an elevator shaft ... read more
