Todays title I saw on a map of the area of Interlaken. Its a fair description of this beautiful place. I figure you would struggle to design a more picturesque perfect scenic town. Nestled in a valley, between two still aqua blue lakes, surrounded by towering mountains, covered in thick green woodland, with the sights of whitecaps and glaciers, under a warming bright sun and blue skies.
Turns out, theres no domestic intercity buses in Switzerland? The con of this, is train travel is painfully expensive. The trip from Zurich to Interlaken, via a stop in Lucern, costing us around $110AUD for the two of us for a few hour journey. The pro, is the trains are excellent. The route was also amazingly scenic, giving us great mountain views and lake views coming into Interlaken. The colour of the water here is quite unbelievable, such a bright aqua blue, so clean and fresh.
We should have learned by now, but NEVER rely on the directions of others. Our accommodation for two nights here was at tent city, a cheap place in an extremely expensive city. The directions they gave us sucked, and it took a good 40 minutes before we arrived.
All in all it was a pretty good place to stay. Its a backpackers, about 20 permanent tents set up, each with comfy matresses and bedding. Theres a swimming pool, jacuzzi, fussball table, showers, toilets, fridges, table tennis and bar. A silence rule after 10pm, means easy sleep. We spent the rest of our first afternoon in the pool and jacuzzi, giving fussball a spin also. We decided to go out for one dinner here in Interlaken at Landgashof Hirschen. Here we sampled traditional Swiss food, in a three course meal. Grilled cheese, cheese fondue, and meranque for desert.
The next day, we again woke to clear blue skies. We jumped on a public bus to explore the city of Interlaken. From there, another public bus to Nuehaus, right by one of Interlakens great lakes. We wandered here for a time, and I jumped into the aqua blue lake for a (freezing but) refreshing swim in a beautiful spot. I hadn't brought a towel, but drying off didn't take long. We strolled off on a nice walk through the woods, along the river, stopping off at a bird hyde on the way. Eventually, we came out on the road, and followed
it back to the bus stop to take us back.
As we arrived back at Tent City we found it had become a party event for Friday night, there was a mountain bike event happening and DJ van playing music. We grabbed a couple half price beers for happy hour and headed over the road to buy dinner at the supermarket. Tonights feast was microwavable cheese and chicken burgers, hot peppers filled with cheese, olives and fetta, with the cheapest bottle of Swiss wine available. By the time the sun set, the weather had started to change and cloud over, and as we climbed into our tent it started to rain.
Tomorrow, we board a train to Geneva, via Bern. Another expensive trip for a couple hours at $150AUD for two, but what can you do? Booking last second transport is a bad idea. Hopefully its as scenic as the trip to Interlaken!
