Geo: -33.0206, -71.5548After a nice breakfast we left the hotel for two hour coach trip to Valparaiso. Not before we had half an hour of chaotic organisation on behalf of the rep. The coach trip was through the wine region...there also seemed to be a lot of corn growing there too. We didn't see much of Valparaiso as we booked into the terminal and embarked straight away. We had champagne as we boarded and then went to a terrace at the back of the ship for some lunch. After a short wander around the deck we found our room and As luck may have it, the bags arrived at our room soon after. It didn't take long to unpack. We then went to the outside pool for a quick swim, a dunk in the jacuzzi and ... read more

Geo: -33.4691, -70.642We landed at 10:00 and were met at the airport by a Celebrity rep and transferred by coach to the Kennedy Hotel. We passed shanty towns running along the banks of the river. Although tired, we freshened up, then walked to the Parque Arauco shopping mall, just 3 blocks away. It is Chiles leading Mall with designer shops and outside restaurants - it had a cosmopolitan, almost European feel to it. Here we caught the Touristik hop on hop off tour bus around the city. We thought that if we used our time and sleep later, it'd be a better way of getting over the tiring journey...it turned out to be the right decision. The city wasn't architecturally beautiful but had loads of history associated with the colonies and Spanish rule. It felt really ... read more

Geo: 51.5001, -0.126236We left Heathrow at 20:10 for Paris. Good old Air France, the flight was on time and it was a short walk between gates. It took an hour to get to Paris. It was then 13 hours flying time to Santiago. It was a good job it was overnight as the entertainment system was terrible.... read more

Geo: 64.1355, -21.8954Late breakfast and a city trip to Reykjavik. A bright, clear but cold day. Arrived in Reykjavik at midday, wandered through the flea market and headed for the 76m high Hallgrims Cathedral, a famous city landmark - a really unusual design of vertical columns. The city is full of colourful houses including different coloured roofs; it's a clean and quiet city (no car horns or revving engines). Coffee and apple pie break at a small cafe and then walked a couple of kilometres to the city park and botanic gardens, probably lovely in the summer but not at their best in the snow. We sat on a bench and watched children feeding the ducks and then walked down the main shopping street to the iced over pond next to City Hall in the centre ... read more

Geo: 64.0674, -16.1691Set the alarm for 7am as we have a long drive ahead of us. First in for breakfast and on the road to Jokulsarlon by 8am. Jokulsarlon is a lake where ice fractures off the Breioamerkurjokull glacier, and floats through a causeway to the sea. It was only 315 kilometres (4 hours 30mins in the car each way)! What an amazing sight... Well worth the drive. Apart from fantastic scenery on the way; snow-capped mountains, waterfalls, miles of flat volcanic and rocky plains etc, the lake was amazing - huge blocks of blue/white ice bobbing around. We wandered down to the beach on the other side of the causeway) it was surreal... littered with huge chunks of ice that had washed ashore onto the black volcanic sandy beach. It didn't look natural, no matter ... read more

Geo: 63.8385, -22.4393We had a lazy start.... And a great breakfast. The food in the hotel is really good. We intended to spend a couple of hours in the Blue Lagoon followed by a few hours in Reykjavik. After spending 90mins in the car we got to the Blue Lagoon only to find they are fully booked. Luckily we just had to wait about an hour before they let us in to wallow in the geothermal springs and rub silica and minerals into our faces. It was pretty odd being in the warm water whilst it's freezing and snowing. The spring also gave off a sulphurous smell of egg. After a complementary drink and ensuring we'd been everywhere in the pool (to get our money's worth) we left and made our way back to Reykjavik. Although ... read more

Geo: 64.9631, -19.0208It's very quiet here! Started day with a healthy breakfast before heading for Thingvellir National Park. Thingvellir is where everything 'Iceland' began such as the laws, religion and social structure. Lovely views, frozen lake, cute church, rugged landscape and really windy. Met some scuba divers in the car park (are they crazy? Do they know how cold the water is likely to be?) Area is now a UNESCO world heritage site. We then went to Geysir where we saw steam venting out of the earth, the geysers (one sent hot water in to the air every 10 minutes) and we visited the gift shop selling traditional Icelandic produce (lots of Woolley Pulleys and Tim bought his first Icelandic pin badge) We had Icelandic (lamb) soup for lunch and then drove 10k to Gullfoss on ... read more

Geo: 63.9331, -20.9971Headed off early for the airport as the traffic to Heathrow can be a nightmare. Good decision me thinks. Got to T1 in good time.... It's empty and really quiet due to the terminal being refurbished so most of the outlets were boarded up (less places to spend money which can only be a good thing) Enough time for a latte and a full English. Julie's happy as she has her bottle of water for the plane and a shiny new magazine. Perfect start to the holiday. After a 3 hour flight landed in Keflavik, got through baggage and customs in about 15 mins only to wait in the Avis queue for about 45 mins because there was only one member of staff on the desk. We picked up a Nissan Qashqai and drove ... read more

Geo: 40.556, 14.2212Caught train from Meta to Sorrento and then the Hydrofoil to Capri (30 mins). The island has various attractions spread all over so we hired a moped to see as much as possible. The only vehicles on the roads were tourist taxis, the local buses and others who had hired a moped so pretty quiet. The roads were few but all twisty and undulating. We visited Ana Capri, a picturesque inland town with lots of small shops and places to eat. We bought a pin badge for Tim's collection, a Pandora moped bead for my charm bracelet to remind me of our Amalfi experience and most importantly a sandwich to eat en-route. We stopped at Faro lighthouse overlooking an inlet where a few small boats had anchored and local children were diving into the ... read more

Geo: 40.6423, 14.4101After several days of sightseeing, we decided on a quiet day at the beach in Meta, which is a ten minute walk from our B. On the way down to the beach we booked ourselves a table at Tico Tico for the evening (recommended by our hostess and other B guests) We hired ourselves a sun bed and umbrella and stayed there all day reading with the exception of lunch which was a mozzarella, ham and lettuce roll which we ate on the beach terrace. As with all hot Mediterranean places the Amalfi coast has it's fair share of stray cats so most of our ham was donated to a little black cat with green eyes who also loved mozzarella! Poppie, take note and stop being so fussy! We came back from the beach ... read more
