Geo: -26.3891, 153.105Tim's dad Facetimed us at 4.30am, then an hour later and shortly after that again! Needless to say we were asleep and didn't pick up, although the ring tone woke us up! When Tim called him back he reminded his dad that we are ten hours ahead so although it was late afternoon in the UK was actually early morning the next day here! Later, much later, we went to Noosa Heads national park to walk a coastal route which skirted the bays and beaches for a few miles. It was very hot so we stopped for a couple of drink breaks, one in the park itself and one in the town of Noosa which is a tourist hotspot. Tim and I had a Monte Carlo biscuit with our pot of tea (yummy - ... read more

Geo: -26.4761, 153.09710am breakfast at the Colley's favourite beach cafe (a French patisserie) at Coolum on the coast, about half an hour from their house. Then drove five minutes down the coast to Peregian for a walk along the beach. Peregian extends for miles with fine golden sand and good surf -we walked for a couple of miles and then collected our towels and swim costumes from the car to spend the day at the beach. The boys were straight in the sea with their body boards like big kids! The water temperature on the board was displayed at 22. I braved the water for all of five minutes because the waves were quite strong. We were in safe hands with lifeguards on hand as always between the red and yellow flags. Lynya and I then ... read more

Geo: -26.6925, 152.895Got up to see Maddie and her two friends who had slept over in their swags (very substantial sleeping bags) go off to a Supernova convention in Brisbane, all dressed up as Homestuck characters. It was another early start as they were picked up at 8.30am! Brekkie, then our tour guide (Lynya) started her activity programme which took us inland to the Hinterland/Glass mountain region. Our personal chauffeur (Glen) took us first uphill via windy roads to a quaint little town, Montville where we had a coffee looking out on a spectacular view towards the Sunshine Coast. Visited lots of gift shops, including a dedicated Christmas shop (hardly surprising when we are staying with the biggest lover of everything Christmas!) On the way we saw a bush fire in progress creeping its way up ... read more

Geo: -26.6385, 152.96Woke to the sound of the apartment telephone. Thought maybe we'd overslept and that reception were giving us a wake up call, but no it was our friend Lynya making sure we were on track to arrive at her house later today! I think she's excited at the prospect of their first UK guests since their arrival in Oz a year ago! Grabbed brekkie at a nearby cafe and walked to Central train station for the 11.30am service to the Gold Coast for our two hour journey north to Nambour. Glen met us at the station; we went back to the house for a quick cuppa before picking Lynya up from work (Maroochydore shopping centre). Sat with a glass of wine watching the fruit bats flock into the trees and listening to the wildlife ... read more

Geo: -27.4676, 153.028Checked out of hotel and caught Skybus to the airport (driver thankfully more amicable than the one who dropped us off!) One hour flight to Brisbane; no transfer booked so caught the train to the centre and walked from there to our apartment in Albert Street (10mins) Some trivia about Brisbane centre is that street names are either boys or girls names with the male streets going up/down, the female streets running across. Perfect location and a beautiful apartment with huge balcony and every facility you'd need for a long stay (sadly only staying one night) A much needed washing machine and dryer to freshen up the contents of our suitcases, so against the grain (we are on holiday after all) we put a load in to wash before exploring the city. Walked through ... read more

Geo: -33.7971, 151.288Our final day in Sydney. We couldn't decide on whether we should risk disappointment by going to the Blue Mountains, the only other place remaining on our list of 'things to do', but due to the recent bush fires and a two hour train journey, we plumped instead for a return to Manly beach via the harbour ferry. It was by far our favourite place in Sydney, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The ferry goes past the bridge, opera house, gardens and zoo, plus lots of bays and inlets. There is always lots of activity with water taxis, cruise ships, other ferries, 'fun rides' and yachts, so lots to see. Manly streets have a great cafe culture with three picturesque beaches a short distance apart, one accessible by a coastal ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Bondi Beach November 5th 2013

Geo: -33.8903, 151.277Ditto yesterday morning, but paid for bus to Bondi (15 min journey) Quite windy but sunny with brilliant surf - too wild to swim, but a few surfers out. Very fine, white sandy beach that can accommodate 35,000 according to the local signage - more like 35 on it today! Walked the coastal path to a big sculpture event/modern art event taking place on the cliff top. Bought the requisite Bondi sweatshirt and currently sitting in a free wifi cafe with a coffee writing this, not sure what we'll do tonight.... read more

Geo: -33.8645, 151.216We slept in, had a cuppa, then went to our favourite breakfast haunt (almost regulars) before making our way down George Street on foot. Visited the Queen Victoria Building which has been restored and filled with upmarket shops. It retains its tiled mosaic floors, stained glassed windows and old clocks, lighting etc (never been in such posh loos). The central feature of the complex was a three storey high Christmas tree laden with 2,400 Swarowski decorations, thousands of lights and it took 72 people three days to complete the look - seems strange seeing a Christmas tree when it's so warm. Always thinking of what cake to cook next, I bought myself an Aussie women's association cookbook so I can bake Yo Yo's and Lamington's when I get home. We walked around the Opera ... read more

Geo: -33.844, 151.242Goodbye noisy room, hello tranquil room! Again, a good breakfast followed by the free bus. Another ferry ride, this time to Taronga zoo on a steep hill across the bay. The cable car ride to the main entrance looked appealing but the queue didn't, so we walked to the lower entrance instead. 33 degrees C and quite humid so we were quite hot by the time we reached the red Panda enclosure, the first exhibit. Spent 5 hours at the zoo, and still didn't see everything! Made sure we saw the koalas, wombats, Tasmanian devils, sun bears, kangaroos & wallabies, fennec foxes, fishing cats, binturongs (bear cats) and all the usual stuff like the big cats and monkeys. Unfortunately missed the emus and the platypus remained hidden. Boat back to C Quay and spent ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Manly November 2nd 2013

Geo: -33.7971, 151.288Promised ourselves a relaxing day so had a cooked breakfast at a nearby cafe, caught the free tourist bus to Circular Quay and a ferry from there to Manly, a beach resort 25 mins across the bay from Sydney. Spent the day on the beach reading, in the pub or window shopping. Had Thai for dinner on Manly Pier before catching the ferry back for the fireworks in Darling Harbour, the newest and most trendy part of Sydney. It was buzzing with people in fancy dress (belated Halloween) getting on party boats. Lots of bars and restaurants, great boardwalk with plenty of seating places to people watch. Fireworks superb (made a mental note to try and get to the IMAX and watch a movie before we leave this vibrant city)... read more
