Well, it started raining early this morning, and was still drizzling when we got up, although there are signs that the sun is wanting to break through. We slept in late this morning, and may have to start setting our alarm at night again in order to be on our way at 8:00. After breakfast and packing up the RV, we were on our way to Seward. The trip north on the Sterling highway was pretty uneventful, with the low clouds and light rain spoiling the scenery. We retraced our tracks from two days before until we got to Rte 9, near Cooper Landing, and we headed south. Just north of Seward, there was a turn off to "Exit Glacier National Park", so we decided to take the 8 mile road up, and see what that ... read more

This morning began with all of us deciding to sleep in, as we are not leaving the Homer area today. It was wonderful to sleep late for a change. While looking out the window toward Cook Inlet, Ray and I thought we saw a few whales. After they hadn't moved in 5 minutes however, we deduced that they were rocks, and it was low tide. So much for that animal sighting. The day started out overcast, with the forecast showing a 30% chance of rain, but by the time we all had breakfast, straightened up and got going, the sun was shining through, and the temperature warmed up nicely. Our first stop today was the Homer Spit, a long narrow bar of gravel with is home to dock facilities and boating services, along with shops and ... read more

Once again, a great nights sleep and great breakfast. We got off a little later than planned, as Jan's clock was set an hour earlier than it should have. While waiting, we watched some guy prancing around the RV park in his bikini speedo and pink crocs. First wildlife sighting of the day. We headed out a short time later, gassed up the RV's, and headed for Rte 1 to the Kenai Peninsula. Traffic in Anchorage appeared very busy and hectic after spending the prior 16 days in the quiet of the wilderness. Almost immediately after leaving the Anchorage area, we were treated to some more spectacular scenery. We entered the Seward Highway's scenic byway, with Cook Inlet's Turnagain Arm off our right, and the Chigmet Mountains in the distance. Wisps of clouds hung over the ... read more

We awoke this morning to a much cooler temperature than previous mornings. After breakfast, we unhooked, cleaned the windshield and left Denali. The campsite we stayed at, Golden Nugget, while very convenient to everything here, was certainly not the greatest. Very dusty and no scenery at the site. We hit Rte 3 southbound, and the weather was gorgeous; a slight chill, brilliant clear skies and no clouds. The scenery southbound was once again spectacular. With the Talkeetna Mountains on our left, and the Susitna River on our right, there was a vista at every turn, requiring a quick Kodak moment stop. Just South of Cantell, about 20 miles out of Denali National Park, while crossing Broad Pass, we came around a turn and there off our right was Mt. McKinley, clear as a bell, and majestic ... read more

We once again awoke to another beautiful day, in fact clearer than the day before. We all slept like the dead last night, and didn't get up until 7:00 am. As Bud and Jan had never been here before, they decided to take the bus excursion with John and Diane, up the Denali Park road. This is a 6 1/2 hour trip. Sandy and I had decided that we were going to unhook the RV, drive up the Denali Road as far as Savage River (12 miles) and see if Mt. McKinley was visible today. After that we were going to do some fishing. After a nice breakfast, and getting our fishing gear all sorted, we headed off for the Denali Road. The climb up the mountain is quite spectacular, with drop offs, and snow banks ... read more

After a good nights sleep once again, we awoke to another beautiful day. We have been blessed with the weather thus far on this trip. We've had rain twice, once in the Dakota's and a short rain in Skagway, neither of which has affected our trip. They're calling for rain later in the week, when we're supposed to be down on the Kenai Peninsula, so we are hoping they are wrong. After breakfast, we gassed up and filled the propane tank, as it was getting a little low, and headed out for Fairbanks. I have to say, the drive to Fairbanks was the most boring route we've been on this whole trip. It was miles upon miles of forests, with very little animal activity. There was a mountain range on our south side most of the ... read more

After a great nights sleep at Kathleen Lake, we headed back up the Haines Highway to Haines Junction. We spotted the RV park that we had originally planned to stop at, and were happy with the decision we had made to stop at Kathleen Lake. The RV park, Fast Gas RV park, was located at a gas station with not one tree to be seen. The drive north brought us by Kluane Lake, the largest lake in the Yukon territory. It is approx. 154 sq miles. Seemed as though the lake went on forever, and made our large lakes back home seem like small ponds. Then came the ice-field ranges of the St. Elias Mountains, that included Canada's highest mountain, Mount Logan at 19,545ft. There are also 6 other peaks over 16,000 ft. Well, last night and this morning we got our first rain since the Dakota's, and it was kind of nice hearing it on the RV. Luckily, it let up by the time we got up, although it remained overcast. We've got our fingers crossed that it will clear this afternoon for our Ferry ride across Taiya Inlet to Haines, AK, then up the Haines highway back to the AlCan highway. As we did not have to be at the Ferry until 1:30 pm, we had very relaxed morning, catching up on our laundry and straightening up the RV. Ray found a scrub brush on a pole and bucket and washed the front end of the RV. It was caked with bugs, and was rather gross. We moved the RV's to the Ferry staging area around 10:30, ... read more

Although we hated to leave our "favorite campground" in Watson Lake, we headed out at 8:00am with plans to make Skagway by early afternoon. Just 60 miles out of Watson Lake, the scenery again became spectacular. Those reading this blog are probably saying "You've said that before." We'll be saying to each other, as we drive, OMG look at that. Then we come around another bend and say Oh my God, look at that! You could be taking pictures constantly here. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of turnoffs on this highway, so it's difficult to stop and take pictures. We did decide to stop and have lunch in Tagish, as we were going to be turning off the Alaska highway for our side trip down to Skagway, Alaska. We headed southwest, on Route 8 toward ... read more

Awoke early this morning, 5:30 am, to bright sunlight. Days are long here. After showering and dressing, Ray opened the door to find his new friend, Bebe, waiting for him. After a slice of cheese (and I'm running low for grilled cheese sandwiches), the sauntered off together to button up the RV's systems. We all went to the main lodge and had a homemade "lumberjack" breakfast. Bought some souveniers, couple of the cinnamon buns and we departed northbound. Our route today was through some of the most scenic country since leaving Lake Louise/Jasper. Our first stop was Summit Lake. This was a gorgeous, turquoise lake that's the highest summit on the Alaskan Highway. Next we encountered a winding section of highway with steep cliffs on either side of the road. He we saw our first Rock ... read more
