Last evening, we were lulled off to sleep to the sound of heavy rain tapping on the roof of the RV. The rain turned to snow at some point, and we awoke to a cold, blustery day, with the ground covered in the white stuff. After a leisurely morning of checking our mail, having breakfast, and just hanging around, we put on multiple layers of clothing and met our tour guide, Laura Callaghan, owner of Yellowstone Scenic Tours. Sandy found this company on the web, and we booked them for our group of 10. I must say, there was a lot of nervousness that the snow would prove to be a hazard problem. Nevertheless, we departed at 9:00 sharp. We entered Yellowstone via the West Gate and went to the Firehole Canyon Drive. This road runs ... read more

Upon waking this morning, I realized why the furnace was cycling all night. The temperature was a frigid 25 degrees. The good news, however, was the sky was a brilliant blue, which was a real treat, as they were predicting rain and mixed precip for today. I hope the weather man continues to be wrong, as they are predicting snow for the next two days. After breakfast, we got underway at 8:00am. We headed north toward Canyon. Our plans required revision, as we learned that the road was closed, due to a water main break, just north of the Lower Falls. We took the side road over to Artist's Point, and after a short walk we were treated to the most incredible sight you can imagine. The area is know as the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, ... read more

After a good night at Crazy Woman’s Camp ground, took care of breakfast and the “Unhooking” of the RV’s and hit the road at 8:00 am. Leaving Gillette, WY we felt like the South Dakota winds had followed us. It was pretty strong for the better part of the morning, but calmed down later in the high country. By the way, a correction to yesterday’s blog is in order. The mountains we saw in the distance were not the Rockies, it was the Bighorn Mountain range. The weather today was a bonus, sunny, with not a cloud in the sky, and temperatures in the high 60’s. The forecast had been for rain, so we were most pleased. The scenery on this route to Yellowstone is very diverse. We went from rolling prairies with lots of cattle ... read more

After going to bed way too late last night, we slept like the dead. After breakfast, we unhooked from out utilities and were on the road by 8:10am. The Cedar Hammock group was leaving at the same time, and had a lot of ground to cover. We fueled up (40 gallons) and calculated we got just over 7 MPG yesterday. The drive thru South Dakota is quite boring. The scenery along the way consists of miles and miles of farm land and cattle. On this trip, we decided to check out Wall's Drug Store, just north of the badlands. They must have spent half a million dollars on billboards telling us the place was world famous. Well, how do you describe it? It was a small, western looking town full of gift shops and trinkets. Definitely ... read more

Our day started off with a bit of a problem. At 5:00 am, Ray woke up to a very chilly RV. After checking the furnace out extensively, he discovered we didn't have any hot water either. After then crawling around outside in his moose pajamas, he found that the set up crew failed to turn on the propane. All is well now, and we were toasty warm enjoying our coffee. After the Great Alaskan orientation, we hit the road at around 9:50, hoping to beat the masses at the nearest Wal Mart. Two grocery carts later, we packed up the RV and headed west. Our next stop would be Costco to pick up our wine supply. As you are limited on how much wine can be brought into Canada, we tried to figure out the correct ... read more

After an early wake up and final check of all needed items, we were on our way to Diane and John's for our Limo pickup to Boston's Logan Airport. Traffic was light so we arrived in plenty of time. After checking our bags in at curbside, and waiting for the others to do so, Ray happens to look at the boarding passes and noted that we had been upgraded to 1st class. Sounded great till he realized that the destination was now Orlando, Fl and his name was Mohammed something or other. As our bags had already disappeared down the conveyer belt, concern crept in rapidly. Luckily the bags were correctly sent to MSP and just the boarding passes were incorrect. I can only imagine not finding this out till we were ready to board. I ... read more

We are back in New Hampshire and are busy getting things settled before our departure for our RV trip two weeks from today. Lots to do here after being gone all winter, boat in the water, dock in, and the never ending yard work. We will need a vacation when we are through! Before leaving Florida we booked a private tour of Yellowstone along with the other three couples from Cedar Hammock. We were surprised and disappointed to find that the campground that we were hoping to stay at in Yellowstone was booked solid. Who would have guessed? We now have reservations right outside of the park in West Yellowstone and will be picked up there for our day long tour. We have worked on our menu and shopping list for our first stop at Wal ... read more

Well here we go again! Loved our last "Great Alaskan Spring Adventure-2015" so much that we decided to do it again this year. This trip we will be heading West across the states stopping at Crazy Horse monument in South Dakota, through Wyoming into Yellowstone, then up through Idaho and Washington state before going into Canada. Once in Canada we will be heading up the Stewart Cassiar highway, also known as "The Gold Rush Route" which goes through the Yukon and up to Alaska. We will be flying out of Boston, Ma. on May 12th, along with the Cunningham's, one of the couples from our last adventure and long time travel companions. Three couples who winter at our community in Florida, Cedar Hammock, have also decided to embark on this adventure taking pretty much the same ... read more

Man, did it pour our last night in Portage. In fact, when we awoke on Friday, it was still raining hard. Ray was disappointed, as there was a trout pond right near us he was hoping to try out, but it was too wet to go. We had a leisurely morning, getting up late, having breakfast, and doing most of our packing. We gave all our extra food to Kirk, the manager here at the RV park, and he seemed very appreciative. Cost of goods up here is quite expensive, so it was good to help him out. We finally got underway around 11:00 AM for the short drive back up to Anchorage. We decided that we were going to go into the downtown area, look at some shops and get some lunch before checking our ... read more

Well, last night it rained cats and dogs. Must have been cold as well, as the heater was on quite frequently. We set the alarm for 6:00 am, but shut it off and went back to sleep. Finally got up around 7:30, had breakfast and put in the day before's blog, having to restart this stupid wifi a couple of dozen times. This campground, Miller's landing, has no redeeming values. We finally pulled out and went to downtown Seward's visitor's center. After getting some info as to where to go, we went to their Aquarium, and then to the downtown shops. The Aquarium was just alright, and the downtown area was less than alright. If the weather had been sunny, this would have been a wonderful place to come, but with the rain and low clouds, ... read more
