We left the campground at 8 am once again, and drove into town to gas up and get some pictures of the Mile 0 sign for the Alcan highway. Met a nice couple from Edmonton that was traveling in their RV for the next month. They showed us some pictures they had taken of a Grizzly and her cub walking along the shoulder of the highway. Incredible shots. After the obligatory Kodak moment, we headed out on the Alcan. The scenery for the first 200 miles was pretty non-eventful. More flat, agriculture land, with nothing much to see. We passed through towns named Fort St. John, Wonowon, Pink Mountain, and Sikanni Chief. When I say town, I'm exaggerating quite abit. You slow down from 100 Kilometers per hour to 50 KM, and are through town in ... read more

Woke up to another cold morning, but it did not take very long for the temperature to rise. During the day were are all in much lighter clothing, as it has been up into the 70's. We were up and out again by 8 am this morning after a very enjoyable stay at beautiful Whistler's campground. We instantly encountered a small herd of caribou at the highway. The animals are generally on the move at dawn and dusk, and today we saw quite a few on our way to Hinton. They included another black bear, elk and a half dozen Big horn sheep. The scenery along the Jasper/Hinton route was also quite lovely and mountainous. Our stop in Hinton included a visit to Walmart (God bless Sam Walmart), and then the grocery store. Diane needed to ... read more

It is the end of another great day. We left Banff at 8:00 am, gassed the RV's up downtown, and hit the road on Rt. 1, heading for the Iceland Parkway. The views on this road could never be accurately described. Each turn brought a vista more spectacular than the one before. Although four of us had traveled this area before a few years back, we were still not tired of it's beauty. The Iceland Parkway is a 144 mile stretch of highway between Lake Louise and Jasper that meanders through multiple passes in the high mountains. It was originally an Indian path, and was shared with the early European explorers. During the depression, a work project was begun to make it a one lane road. Today it is an incredible highway. We stopped on the ... read more

What a day! We decided last evening to sleep in a little later and catch the bus to downtown Banff at 9:00. The regional bus stops at the campground every 40 minutes and is only $1.00 for seniors. Diane and I spent the morning checking out the downtown while Ray and John went to a coffee shop so that Ray could input yesterday's blog, as there is no internet at the campground. This may be an issue as we go along as some sites do not have internet. Jan and Bud took the Banff gondola ride and thoroughly enjoyed it. The rest of us had already ridden it on a previous visit here. We then met atthe Fairmont Hotel and soaked in all of the spectacular views from their terrace. We bused back to the campsite, ... read more

Okay, so we lied. Yesterday was not the last of the long days on the road. We spent the night at Dick's RV Park in Great Falls, MT. It was absolutely wonderful, with all the hook ups, plus TV and Internet, and half the price that KOA was charging. First thing in the morning, we went to the local grocery store and picked up needed supplies, topped off the gas, then hit the road. Problem was, we headed off in the wrong direction on the interstate. Upon realizing our error, we exited and discovered we would not be able to re-enter the highway until they finished the paving in front of the ramp. 15 minutes later, after the fastest paving job we've ever seen, we were allowed up the ramp on 15 north. The trip to ... read more

Day 3 turned into a very nice day with the winds gone, and the sun shinning. We all were awake early with the time change, and were on the road by 8 AM. Very chilly last night, with the furnace coming on frequently. We're also getting to be "old hands" when it comes to disconnecting all the RV's imbilical cords each morning. When planning the trip we had decided to take a more direct route to Great Falls which took us off of the interstate, and it turned out to be a wonderful decision. Diane took her first stab at driving their RV, and she did a marvelous job. I'll be getting my shot soon. The scenery on Rt.212 was spectacular. There were miles and miles of praires full of steer, deer and sheep. While driving ... read more

I know, you're saying "where the hell is Alzada, Montana?" I'll get to that later. Today was a very interesting day, scenery wise. After a nice night, we unhooked the RV's in the drizzle, and got on our way. Not much to see on this stretch of the highway, the huge crop fields gave way to gigantic cattle ranchs, stretching for miles in all directions. Still no windmills. The drive to the badlands was a white knuckle one. The drizzle turned into monsoon rain, and the wind was 30 mph, gusting to 45. The RV's were like a giant sail, buffeting back and forth. Then we get a construction area about 15 miles long, down to one lane, rain coming down in sheets, wind swaying us around, and tractor trailer trucks coming at us in the ... read more

Well we are here! Left Boston yesterday at 11:33 AM, and arrived in St Paul, Minnesota at 1:30 local time. Unfortunately, the bus that was bringing us to the Winnebago factory was not scheduled to leave until 5:00 so there was a long wait. After retrieving our bags, we realized that there was nowhere to eat except for a small food stand, and with all of our luggage in tow, taking a cab or even a bus to a restaurant was impossible. The drive to Forest City took about 2 hours, 15 mins, and when we arrived we were greeted by a very friendly and efficient team, and we were in our RV's in a matter of minutes. Needless to say our main focus was getting something to eat. We then proceeded to unpack, and fell ... read more

Well, the packing is done, the mail put on hold, and everything is in order. We are ready to travel! Clothing selection was difficult, as the temperatures where we are traveling seem to be all over the place, as a typical Spring usually is. That meant packing heavier clothing all the way down to shorts and tee shirts. We all decided it was better not to over pack as we plan on doing laundry every few days when it is available at the campground. We women have also been busy preparing menues, and the shopping list for all the necessary items we will need to purchase at our first stop, a super Walmart. As we're working on getting together our "required" equipment, Jan presented us with a "Bear Bell". Apparently you're supposed to wear it, and ... read more

Well here we are back in New Hampshire, and less than two weeks away from our departure. Before leaving Florida, the group got together for a final meeting and review of the route we will be taking. Unfortunately, today we learned that one of the couples will be unable to make the trip due to illness. We will miss them, as they have been on all of our other adventures. The excitement is certainly building with the other remaining couples, . We have been checking the temperatures along our travel route and have been pleasently surprised to see that they are not as cold as we anticipated. Very excited to learn today that the gondola at Lake Louise will be open when we get there, as well as the Maligne Lake boat trip to Spirit Island. ... read more
