Europe » Romania August 14th 2015

Today we arrive at our 2nd last port, Nikopol. This port is on the Bulgarian side of the river, and Romania is on the other side. Another breakfast, another bus. Today we have a full day trip to the country. We head off for Veliko Tarnova and Abranassi. It says 2 hours on the bus to get there. Found out why it takes so long once we got going. Roads are very very dodgy here. Our tour guide greets us in a very pommy accent. Turns out he has been living in Bulgaria for over 10 or 11 years and is married to a Bulgarian. Another tour guide who loves the microphone. Can't shut him up. Between him dribbling away, and the driver wandering all over the road to avoid potholes the size of the bus ... read more

Europe » Bulgaria » Vidin Province August 13th 2015

Wake up, breakfast, pick up shore passes, onto bus. Hmm, here we go again. Today we have a half day tour visiting the town of Vidin and Belogradchik. We head into the countryside to Belograchik first. This place looks very run down. Lots of deserted factories, etc. in the towns and countryside. Very poor looking country. We get closer to the town and we get a great view from the road in. Huge rock outcrops in some weird looking shapes, the rabbit eating some cabbage, the kissing girls, etc. finally get to the fortress which is built on these rocks. Off we go, we had been told it will be a tough walk. Not wrong. Cobblestones, rock paths then steps. Some of the steps are well formed, others are stones that have worn in lots of ... read more

Today we enter the Iron Gates (a gorge on the river Danube that has a fortress guarding this gorge). Problem is that they pass the fort at around 0600, so early start. Quite a few people on deck for this view. The fort comes into view and it is built on top of the rocks at the entrance to the Iron Gates gorge. Impressive sight and the Captain spins the ship on it's axis so both sides can see it. Chris is watching from the bedroom and gets a good view as well. The wind is blowing quite hard due to the gorge effect. It is also quite cool in comparison from the past few days. Then we enter the gorge. The cliffs are very steep and there are caves in the limestone everywhere. Go back ... read more

Europe » Serbia » West » Belgrade August 11th 2015

The capital of Serbia, Belgrade today. Off on another city tour. Mostly by bus but we also got off and did a few walks. First was to the St Sava Cathedral. This is still being built following the Nazi occupation and NATO bombings. The place is huge and the guide told us that the cupola alone weighed over 400 tonnes and a special crane had to be built to lift it into place. There is no money coming from the government so they are relying on donations to try and complete it........ Back to the bus, then into the main central pedestrian plaza for free time. We wander down to the markets and walk amongst the fruit, vegies and bric a brac. Nearly every stall had cartons of cigarettes on display, and a lot had all ... read more

Europe » Serbia » North » Novi Sad August 10th 2015

Another day, another country. Border control is on board this morning but we don't have to front then this time, however, we have been told that we need to carry our passports while on shore. As we walk off, the Hotel Manager reads my t shirt (the perfect man one - has a giggle) and then says he is happy that I didn't have my Croatia t shirt on today - might not be politically correct - or good for my safety either.......... Our tour this morning takes in the local town of Novi Sad. Our local guide is a cracker (Jelena). She is about 40, has a 2 and a half year old, is a single mother and we nearly also found out lots of other info as well. She certainly didn't conform to the ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Slavonia » Vukovar August 9th 2015

Today we head off for a tour of 2 cities in Croatia (and yes, I do have my Croatia t shirt on today). Firstly we visit Osijek, a little town about 20 minutes for our docking place at Vukovar. We get to see lots of interesting countryside and then a local farm visit to sample some locally made fruit brandy (Slivovic). The guy who runs the place was quite the comedian. Lots of stories about how to fish with a net, then he ran through a powerpoint of the local area with running commentary. Afterwards, we got to sample some of his local wines (red and white - very young indeed). Then we went to a local church where we had a private recital. One young lady on the piano and a singer. Beautiful piano work, ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Southern Transdanubia » Mohacs August 8th 2015

Another smooth sailing and we get to eat breakfast while sailing today, a little sleep in and a later breakfast as well. We finally dock at our destination in Hungary - Mohacs (pronounced Mohaxe). This morning we have time to do nothing as we watch the ship do it's thing when docking - very smooth process, once we get the right dock - skipper is obviously told one thing, but the man on the shore tells him to use the next dock. No problems, just slide along a bit. Another ship comes in behind us and docks not long after. We have lunch on board then get ready for our shore tour of the Mohacs memorial park and city tour. There was also a choice of a winery tour but decided against that as some of ... read more

A day of rest and pampering. Wake up slowly, as we aren't doing any of the optionals today. We decided that a massage might be on the cards to try and relieve the aching muscles. We cross the Elizabeth bridge to the Gelert Spa facility. This place is huge. An indoor and outdoor swimming pool, 2 thermal bath houses, massage facilities and other spa type functions. We book our massage for 1545, and Chris a pedicure for 1710. That done, we decide to do some more walking and shopping in town. We end up in the plaza around St Stephen's basilica. Drinks and then we wander off to Chris's other beautician appointment (waxing). Arrive early, but beautician also there and starts early. I might have dozed off a little when Chris comes and says all done ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest » Pest August 6th 2015

Wake up early and the sun is shining. We have just passed a little town with as usual, a church spire and other buildings close to the river. Up to the top deck and the river is as flat as a tack, great water skiing territory.... Breakfast is very nice, again, too hard to knock back. We are approaching Budapest and now there are quite a few on the deck. Prime positions have been grabbed already, but still lots of room. We get a broadcast of the sights on the way in. Different viewpoint of the town from the river. We glide past the Parliament building and then down past all the city bridges and do a U turn, made to look easy even though this ship is over 178 m long. Back to our docking ... read more

Europe » Slovakia » Bratislava Region » Bratislava August 5th 2015

Wake up very refreshed and Chris heads off to the beauty parlor to see if she can get some grooming happening before the cruise. No luck, so we decide to just head for the Hilton via train (we know this one quite well now), pick up our bag and then to the Intercontinental to check in for the cruise. All goes well and bag in hand we walk through the park to our meeting point. Get greeted at the front steps by the porters who carry our bags up the stairs for us. The Avalon desk is in front of us and we check in - on the list and we are told that we have a meeting at 1300 to fill us in on the itinerary. Hmmm. We have about 2 hours to kill so ... read more
