This is the long haul flight. 12 hrs 20 mins. They decide to serve a full meal at midnight. Gotta go with that. Chris has worked the flat bed out again and is in no food mood so silence there. I go for the goods with bubbles to match the next leg of the trip. Finally decide that food isn't a good idea and pass on the dessert. Flat bed awaits. Now we compare. Hmm, bed hard, not as roomy and blah blah. Getting picky now. no matter, sleep comes easily after a long day. After 4 hours of bliss, up for a stretch and whatever stop. Back to bed and asleep in no time. Eventually wake up after about 8 hours sleep. Hmm, complaints aside, can't be that bad. Woken up for breakfast then we ... read more

Well actually day 1 minus a bit. We have been dropped off at the Parkroyal at Melbourne airport by Stephanie so we can meet our early flight time on Monday morning. All good with room, lovely views of the car park - no matter, here to sleep, not peep.... Now day 1 dawns. Up at 0500 to do the 2 hour bit for a 0745 flight. Wander into the international terminal at 0545. Up to the business class line - yeah baby, now it is real. Only 4 in the queue. Gotta love that. Bags checked all the way to Nice then the kicker, plane is 1 hour late due to late arrival. Bugger, could have slept a bit longer. Oh wel,, into the Cathay Pacific lounge. Hmm, tiny teensiest lounge but had the goods for ... read more

Home at long last. So much nicer to go through customs and immigration in your home town. Easy pass through customs with the automated gates. Declared some stuff we bought in Budapest which the immigration said was no problems, then bags come off as I walk up to the carousel so all is good. Messages from Stephanie saying she is just arriving as well. Out we go and Stephanie is waiting. Nice to see her and we also know that Jessica and the kids are safely down as well. Out to the car and off to home. Arrive home and drag the bags inside for the last time on this trip. Phew, a breath of relief that we have survived 7 weeks of travel, our bags followed us in flight (and the buses, trains and ships) ... read more

Arrive at Dubai airport around 0100. Straight to the Emirates lounge, no problems with this one and we have another shower which is much better this time. Change into long pants for the first time in along time. Getting ready for the cold....... Go and get a Moët for both of us to celebrate our holiday. Nice way to finish off. Have to board again, only a short break but that is much better then the long layovers for some. Now we are on our way to Kuala Lumpur then home to Melbourne. A much quieter passenger list this time, no dramatic passengers but still very full. Catch some sleep but still weary. Land at KL after about 8 hours. Find the Emirates lounge, but no go like Istanbul. Bugger. Anyway, some duty free shopping done ... read more

Last day in Turkey. Up and finalised bags then checked out. Booked a car to take us out to the airport then head off for some more touring. Go to the cisterns which are underground water storages. They are pretty amazing, over 200 stone pillars and some interesting carvings as well. There are fish in the water as well. Our timing here is perfect, straight in and not too many in there either. Finish the cisterns then we have decided to take the tram to the end of its route just to see what is around. As we walk up the road to the tram stop we pass 4 people from the cruise. Stop and say hello, they have a 2 week Turkey tour coming up. Can't go anywhere without bumping into people.... Get our tram ... read more

Wake up and I decide to do Troy this morning rather then the British landing at Gallipoli. Not really interested to see where they landed and failed but nothing was made of that one...... We drive down the side of the Dardanelles we stayed on to Troy and arrive after a huge history lesson of the world as it stands now. All this was meant to lead us into the story of the Trojan horse and Paris and his life. Much more educated now. Wandered around the site which is actually very interesting, especially the parts where the city has 6 levels, based on each level being destroyed by earthquake then rebuilt on top of the old city then another one appeared. Anyway, pics of the horse and off we go back to Istanbul. We cross ... read more

Slept well in much cooler room, and even had a nice hot shower. Down to check out and leave a case behind as we are going to Gallipoli this morning for a 2 day tour. Breakfast is happening, we are due to be picked up by our guide at 0830. A Mercedes mini bus pulls up at the hotel and the porter says this is our taxi. Hmm, no English speaking guide so not too sure what is going on. He moves bus out of the way as anothe bus wants to get past, not much space out the front. Try to communicate but the driver doesn't have any English. The driver is on the phone and next thing the bag is in the back. Still not sure what is going on when a guy comes ... read more

Well guess what. My predictions from last night came true. No air con and bloody HOT. Not a lot of sleep, and to make matters worse, no hot water either. Cold shower helped relieve the heat sweatiness a little, but then it got colder so NOT HAPPY JAN.......... Got down to breakfast and our smiley man on the counter had booked our day tour, but then we dropped the bombshell in his lap. Think he got the message and offered to get the hot water fixed in 15 mins so we could have a shower - no time before trip anyway. He did say the air con should also be fixed - here's hoping..... Little bus arrives at 0830 and we climb aboard. Quite a few others. We drive through the streets and then turn into ... read more

We wake up later than normal but still in time to catch up with others who are leaving at 0900. Catch them before they leave on their personal tour of Romania (including Transylvania). Quite a few still here today. We catch up with the birthday girl and wish her well. Lots of familiar faces having breakfast this morning. We sit outside in a courtyard surrounded by trees. Very pleasant. Eventually get out after more farewells, then to the bags. We have decided to take one bag that we will use from now on, and the other has dirty washing, stuff we don't need, etc. Hopefully we get under the 23 kg limits. Clothes shuffled, remembering we need jeans, etc. for the cold Melbourne welcome and packed. Weights come in under 23 kg - just. Finally out ... read more

Bags finalised then off to our last shipboard breakfast. Lots of goodbyes as we eat then onto the bus for the trip to Bucharest and a visit to the "Palace of the Parliament". This is the 2nd largest building behind the pentagon. It was built by the former dictator (Ceaușescu) about 30 years ago. This place is seriously big. We entered from the car park level, that is -3. Security, hand in passports and then we start our tour. A different tour guide from the parliament buildings. We walk up lots of steps, get told of all the different rooms, most of which are used for conferences or meetings. Half of the building is used as offices and it was never used by Ceaușescu as he was killed after being caught by the good guys. We ... read more
