As a native of the Philippines, I grew up in a district of Manila known as the poorest and the most densely populated area in the country. During that time, I didn’t get a chance to see the beauty of its 7,107 islands. In fact, I didn’t even realize such places even existed within the country and outside the confines of what I conceived was the “true” Philippines.
All that changed during a trip to the Philippines to attend my 25th year high school reunion. That was the first time I have been back to my birth place since I immigrated to the US after my high school graduation. It was during that return that I briefly visited Boracay, an island located in the Visayas region, and fell in love with the clear blue-green waters and white sugar sand of its beaches. So I made a promise to myself and borrowing the famous words of General Douglas McArthur that “I shall return” to explore more of Asia especially my nation of birth.
Five years later, I indeed returned for my 30th high school reunion. I explored El Nido – a place many refer to as the Philippines’ last frontier, Ilocos Sur – the Philippines’ best preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town, Singapore – many would argue has the best food in the world, and Seoul –the South Korean capital.
Fast forward to 2022, I am back for my 40th reunion (previously scheduled last year but cancelled due to the pandemic). This time I will be setting foot in Tokyo, Taipei, and of course new unexplored (by me anyhow) majestic Philippine islands. Please join me in my adventures and hope you enjoy seeing the sights. Mabuhay!

Mel's Adventures
I love to travel! I spent my early 20s wandering the world teaching scuba diving, and ended up settling on the beautiful island of Roatan, Honduras. That's now home base, and I have a hostel there, so I'm surrounded by travelers even when I'm not away. Now that my kids are grown, I have more opportunities to stretch my wings again, so I'm planning on taking trips during the slower times at my business.
