Slow start to the day as our cycle was only short. Panniers packed and we set off towards Matka. The road signs don't make any sense to me and Gus so we were totally reliant on Gus' Garmin. A large portion of the route was on a bike track which ran at the side of the road and when that ran out we chose the pavement. Lol. Along the way we stopped at a fruit shop and then at Lake Treste. The facilities at the lake were sadly abandoned but it would have been a great place when it was first built. Now it looked like a scene out of a movie. The road ran out and we cycled along a path under the steep sides of the canyon. The hotel appeared at the end of ... read more

Up early due to heat and to some extent the jet lag. Breakfast at the hostel and then a walk around town. Gus and I stumbled on a group of men betting on which cup a pea was under. Looked pretty simple at first glance and we guessed correctly each go until it came to placing some dollars on the game. Due to the fact that I didn't have correct money to bet and Gus did he quickly placed a bet. There's a saying that a fool and his money are soon parted. It's correct but should read two fools. Lol. We got scammed! Gus reckons we could have eaten for a week on what he gave away. Lesson learnt. I did take a photo of him googling how much he'd lost but didn't have the ... read more

With any long trip there's the potential for a cluster and the flight over was one such example. I held concerns initially when I boarded the aircraft and found the nuffy behind me getting on with his head mounted GoPro filming. His holiday videos will obviously be a "must see". Flight with Emirates to Dubai was good as I was again bitten by the tsetse fly and slept for 12 out of the next 17 hrs. I also felt safe as I was sat next to a man of the cloth and not next to the budding film maker so I figured the big guy upstairs would keep an eye on him and therefore on me by proxy. I met Gus in Dubai without too much of a drama. Then the cluster started. We had to ... read more

It poured down all night and the initial plan was to cycle in to the Kamniska Bistrica valley and catch the cable car to the Velika Planina region to see traditional herdsman's huts. As we were having breakfast we could see Noah and his ark going past. However, conditions had eased by the time we set off. It was an easy 10 km uphill cycle and we arrived at the cable car after only a short time. The views from the top were made better by the gathering white clouds. The traditional houses here looked ok but some needed some work and if you thought that previous places were void of people you should see this place. Following a look around we caught the cable car back down and then cycled back to the hotel in ... read more

I woke this morning and eagerly logged on to read the overnight comments. However, I was gutted to find that there were none. Not even one :-(. It was only later in the day that I I discovered that this was because I hadn't published the blog! (nuphy) An easy flat cycle today from Skofja Loka - Godešič - Reteče - Zbilje - Vodice - Moste to Kamnik. The names won't mean much to anybody but should I or any other touring cyclist decide to travel these roads again they'll be aware of what the roads are like. On arriving in Kamnik we called in to the local tourist information centre and got directions to the hostel. Whilst in the centre of town we decided to have a brew. Throughout the entire journey we have had ... read more

Nice breakfast followed by a day of sight seeing. 31c here so a bit hot. The town was founded in about 973 when a German emperor gave the territory of Loka as a present to a Bishop in Bavaria. It is interesting to note that the majority of older houses here are only three windows wide. This is because taxes depended on the number of windows and if you had a house that was four windows wide you paid a far higher price. Consequently families built two houses next to each other and lived in them as one house because it was cheaper to pay 2 x three windows than 1 x four window tax. Go figure!! Rather than write an essay here each of the photos has a description of its relevance to the area. ... read more

With breakfast finished we set off for a trip over another pass with an intended destination of Zelezniki via Bohinjska Bistrica, Nemski Rovt, Planina Simne, Spodnja Sorica, Zali Log. The 3000' climb took the edge of both Gus and I and we were both glad when we eventually reached the summit after too many hours of grinding away up hill. We're too old for this. Lol Consequently photos are a bit light on as there was no photography contest on the way up. The ride down was great and we passed through Sorica which is apparently famous for Ivan Grohar. He was an orphan who later travelled to Germany to develop his talent as an impressionist artist. I later googled his life and found it to be quite interesting. After 5-6 hrs we arrived at Zelezniki ... read more

As no breakfast was included at our current hotel we wandered into town and found a local establishment that would feed us. Following this we went to the Tourist information to book a local sightseeing tour. The tour started with a cruise across Lake Bohinj, a trip up to Mt Vogel in the cable car and a look around St. Peter baptist church. Due to the environmental significance of the area the ferry was powered by electric batteries to reduce / minimise pollution. They were charged up overnight and had enough power to do seven return trips to the western end of the lake. The lake is 4.5 kms long, 1 km wide and 45 m deep and has a z12 km circumference. We jumped on the Vogel cable car which took us from 500m AMSL ... read more

In true form Gus updated his camera satellites before we set off from Bled to Lake Bohinj via the road less travelled. Local people had all stated that the mtn pass was much more interesting although it involved a "bit of climbing" um!!! The route we took was Bled, Spodnje Gorje, Viselnica, Krnica, Trnik, Gorjuse, Koprivnik, Jeremiah, Bohinjska Cesnjica to the lake. On the way up Gus had stopped to take some "David Attenborough" shots of some bees. This brought out the competitive side of me and hence a shoot off. Gus was later declared the winner. Unfortunately, Gus used techniques known only to him and usually called "sheer arse" and I believe he got the best shot. He reflected on his SAS days and also called it shoot n scoot. The 18% hill went on ... read more

First up was a short cycle to Bled castle. We arrived at about 0900 am and were the only ones there. The views from the ramparts were amazing as was the view of the small island with the Church of the Mother of God of the Lake. (See photo) and the Parish Church of St Martin. The latter church was built in 1905 on the site of the previous Gothic church which was built in the 15th century but retained some of the original walls from 1100. Bled castle was originally built in 1011 but took on its final appearance in 1511 (quite old then). The most interesting of all the preserved buildings was most certainly the Gothic chapel which was built in the 16th century, and was renovated in a different (Baroque) style around 1700. ... read more
