A day of sightseeing in Piran. Breakfast in Tartini square followed by a trip up the steep cobblestone alleys to St George's church built in 1592 and finished in 1614. The inside was stunning ( see photo) I'm amazed by the little alleyways as you can tell from the number of photos taken of them. Then we wandered around the southern most tip. Gus has been suffering badly from hay fever for a couple of days. Today he realised that he has got some hay fever tablets in his medical kit (nuffy). No other stories of note today.... read more

Today's route basically followed the coast road from Trieste (Italy) to Piran (Slovenia). Stunning coastal scenery of which the majority of it was flat but with some reasonably steep hills squeezed in between tiny coastal hamlets. Muggia was our first experience of tiny off road streets which were too narrow to fit vehicles down but good enough for us to avoid town traffic. As usual we never really knew where these lane ways would pop out but the beauty of them made up for the extra kilometres. We stopped for a coffee in Muggia and Sabrina, the proprietor of the shop was busting to help Gus with his navigation. (Photo attached) From there we continued to cycle the coastal route to Piran. It was substantially longer but our chance of getting lost was reduced as a ... read more

Our evening in Basovizza was punctuated by the sound of church bells which rang every quater of an hour 24/7. Lol there was no need to check your watch during the night. We left Basovizza with the intent of finding accommodation in Trieste before returning to Basovizza on route to Lipica to see the famous Lipizzaner horses. Easy ride in to Trieste with a 10 km down hill stretch. Found the hotel which had the smallest lift in the world. What is it with people in this part of the world. The shower cubicles are so tiny that if you drop the soap you have to perform a dead lift manoeuvre to retrieve it from the tray or open the door in order to fit your rear end out whilst you bend down. Now they've started ... read more

Up at 0530 hrs to read the comments that have come in overnight. Thanks guys. We decided to head towards Triest and take in the UNESCO Stocjanske cave system. We'd googled the route and set off full of confidence. After a short time we were cycling down quiet roads flanked by poppies and a selection of other wild flowers. We knew that we had a short stretch on what looked like a fairly major road on the map. After a left turn we were on it!! It was the flattest road we had come across unfortunately it was a freeway or to be more correct a toll road. Lots of drivers were tooting and giving us advice and I thought what nice people there were to be cheering us on with such enthusiasm. About 4 kms ... read more

Up early 0530 hrs as usual to update the blog. How's that for dedication to my readers. After a healthy breakfast of salami and boiled eggs we cycled off to Postojnska caves. Only a short ride from town... Great! We decided to buy the blockbuster ticket which gives you access to 4 attractions. The first one was the caves. You board a train like the wild mouse for a 2 km trip in to the cave system (which is 27 Kms long). You then walk 1.2 kms through the cave system. Absolutely breath taking! Gus and I were then involved in a photography contest as neither of us are competitive. I used special techniques known only to a few and the results were as expected.... Crap! Just kidding. Gus used a different method called shoot and ... read more

Up at 5.30 hrs. Breakie and pack our kit. We'd previously wrote the directions out of the city down so there should be no problems. Lol. Beautiful weather , flat roads. We made our way out of the city with relative ease. Only missed one turning and soon discovered that error so we backtracked. Our intended route was Ljubljana, Horjul, Vrhnike, Logatec, Postojna. Our actual route was Ljubljana, Horjul, Sentjost, Horjul, Vrhnike, Logatec, Laze, Rakek, Zelse, Postojna. Doesn't sound like a large mishap when it's written but we found that the side trip when we were geographically challenge to Sentjost was up and over the highest feature in the state. We cycled up for more than an hour. My poor chicken legs burned so much I thought I was going to have roast chicken. On the ... read more
