So I havent written in a bit because not much has happened. Let's see... Saturday I went to the market with my mentor Jeffrey. He introduced me to Poffertijes: the most heavenly doughy sugary things ever. I'll definitely go back and take pictures of them. We hung around the market, didn't buy anything. It was raining pretty heavily on and off while we were strolling through the vegetable stands and then all of a sudden, WHOOSH SPLASH!!!! Yep, a liter of dirty tarp water splashed all over my head. I'm not a girly girl, so I'm not exaggerating when I say a LITER (maybe even more). My head was so wet that water poured all down my face and my neck. Lovely. The rest of the time with Jeffrey went downhill after that as he started ... read more

So this morning I woke up and got ready to go to Hengelo to fix this passport problem with 2006 and 2007. Once again, no problemo on the train, and I found the politie station, the same woman was there and she fixed it in 10 minutes. Since it was later than when I was first in Hengelo, more stores were open so I poked around in some neat shops. I went into Xenos, one of my favorite stores, and bought a really cheap umbrella. I figure, if I spend 2.99E on an umbrella versus 7.99E on an umbrella, the wind is going to kill both of them either way. So I opted for a cheap blue umbrella with white polka dots. I didn't have time for breakfast, so I stopped at Bakkerij Bart (the bakery ... read more

Yesterday I got an email from a professor who heard that there was a complaint from an international student who wished his/her class was taught in Dutch...this sounded like me but I wonder who told him. I emailed him back and we set up an appointment for 10am today to chat. He was really nice, offered me some coffee and then I clarified: I was never complaining about my class not being in Dutch because I already knew the circumstances before I attended the first class. He understood and after 15 minutes it was all clear. I rode to the centrum to poke around and realized that it was Tuesday, meaning there was the tuesday market, my favorite! Tuesdays and Saturdays have the same market with the same vendors, but there are less people on Tuesdays ... read more

I was on my bike for most of the day yesterday. I normally don't have to wake up early on Thursdays since my class starts at 1:45, but yesterday I had a meeting at 10am with a man named Huub who helped me set up my online student account and assign me the classes I'm taking. It was a little painful waking up at 8:30- I think I'm a bit spoiled here with my late classes. =) After the meeting, I rode into town (about 20 min) and went to the bank so they could open my online account since I got all the dandy paperwork. I also got some information about the discount train card. It's 55euros and for a whole year you get 40% every train ticket you buy. So that got me thinking...if ... read more

So I started my Dutch course today. It's really great. My teacher is named Janny "Yanni" and she's in her 60s and told us that the only way for us to learn Dutch is if she speaks only Dutch to us. She is definitely right - I just didn't understand a lot of what she said today, haha. My class is 11 people: me, a chinese girl, 3 french guys, 2 spanish girls, 1 portugese girl, 2 german girls and 1 polish girl. It's a good mix and everybody is just as clueless as I am. We have a workbook and a cd, so I'll hopefully be much better at Dutch. yay! I haven't blogged in one or two days just because the excitement is dying down. I mean, I'm still enjoying every moment, but I'm ... read more

Last night after talking to a good friend of mine on Skype until 2am (my time), I crawled into bed really ready for some sleep. But then my eyes fell on my David Sedaris book that has taken me forever to finish. Sedaris is my favorite author and so I think I have been milking this book for so long because I don't want it to end. There are few books that I've read where I actually laugh outloud as I'm reading. All of Sedaris' books have made me do so. Anyway, I was about 50 pages from the end, so I stayed up until 3:15am or so reading. It's been a while since I've finished a book cover to cover since boring school readings usually rob my eyes and brain of any pleasure reading. My ... read more

I've realized the reality. As this is the first time I'm in a different country by myself, without my family, without anybody I know, and without the ability to speak the national language, I was initially gung-ho and didn't know what to expect. I'm still "gung-ho" (thats such a weird word...) but last night really put it all into perspective: I'm not a native, I will never be a native, and not everything here will be as easy as it is in Seattle. It's not something I mind, but now I'm prepared. Last night there was this welcome party for the International students at some building in the centrum called Asterion. Nobody in my house had ever heard of it, but no worries, we looked it up. Should be easy to find. Janne, Anouk and Chiel ... read more

This morning I woke up naturally at 6:30am, a horrible horrible hour. I couldn't sleep for no reason at all, so I just poked around on the internet and spoke to my friend who just returned from India and had jet lag. I finally crawled back in bed and slept for another 4 hours. I guess it takes more than 3 weeks for me to get used to everything - especially not sleeping on a futon. =) After waking up, I checked my email and received the weirdest and funniest email ever. Yesterday, I sent my landlord, Arie, an email because he had some mail. I also wanted to let him know that I finally set up a bank account and I'll pay him for rent. I still haven't paid him for rent at all...and he ... read more

As I was reading some scholarly articles on the couch, Chiel turned on the tv and I couldn't help but watch what was happening. I guess today is a special day in The Netherlands when the Queen Beatrix reads to the public the results of the government's decisions on where the country's money will be divided and what portions will go to which departments (i.e., roads, healthcare, schools, etc). It happens every year and it's always the third Tuesday in September. This whole thing happense in The Hague, Netherlands, and is called "Prinsjesdag" or Prince day. She was seated on this gigantic golden throne, wearing a gold and black silky looking dress. Her hat was the best - gigantic, stiff and golden with the rim bent upwards so that you could pour water in her hat ... read more

So this is my third week of school, and I've been here now for 21 days. I'm starting to get used to a lot and also getting to know my housemates better. The conversations get longer and more in depth. Today Chiel, Arjan and I discussed driver's licenses. Man, we're so lucky in the states to get ours so early! Here in the Netherlands, you can't drive until your 18 and even so, most young people don't have their license (including my cousin Agatha) because it costs $2000.00 to go through driving school! There's so many strict rules and of course it is taught with a manual car. Here there are also different types of driver's licenses. You can't just drive any vehicle - you have to be certified for each kind: car with 8 or ... read more
