Hi all, Today we took a trip to Adalboden, an area we have not been to before. Another Mountain ski area dotted with Swiss Chalets, farms and the velvety look of freshly cut pastures. Those families who rake it together with the long rakes are especially fun to see. The town itself is loaded with rental houses and apartments along a narrow strip of quaint shops Selling a the trinkets and souvenirs one expects. The weather is lovely, still sunny and staying around 68-72 F. Expected to stay the same the last few days of this trip. Ready to come home now. L & G.... read more

Hi, It's me your friendly blog-man. Today Jenna and Jeff left us for the rest of their vacation. We got them on their way and rode the train for an hour or so and then took a different train to Kandersteg for a gondola lift and hike to the Oeschinensee. A colorful mountain lake high up in the Alps.We spent about 3 hours on that adventure. The day was beautiful. Chilly in the morning but by 11 it warmed up and not a cloud in the sky. We are now back in the chalet. Seems pretty quite here with just the two of us. We are already missing them. We had a great time and were able to do a lot in just 4 days. Hope you like the pictures. Hello all, been a few days but I'm back. Jeff and Jenna Hinkely arrived on Thursday in Geneva. We took the train over and came back with them so not any pics that day. Friday we went to Berne but no images. Sat. We went up to the middle of Switzerland to the Lauterbrunnen Valley. And today Sunday we went to Zermatt. Weather has been OK. Some sun some clouds and a little rain. But it's not stopping us. Tomorrow we hope to do a boat ride on one of the large mountain lakes. Hope you like the pics Lowell... read more

Europe September 17th 2014

Hello everybody, We left in cloudy skies and took the train through the long tunnel that comes out in the center, sort of by the two large mountain lakes near Interlaken. The boat trip from Thun to Interlaken West took just over 2 hours stopping quite a bit to pick up and drop off passengers (tourists). The day stayed partly cloudy and about 70 degrees. So over all it was a nice trip. Gloria thought it was amazing and I guess that's good enough for me. Got back to our mt. chalet about 6. Pretty tired. We have been day-tripping 48 out of our 50 days on this trip. But I'd rather wear down than wear out. Jeff and Jenna are coming tomorrow so that will give us a jolt of enthusiasm ! We do hear ... read more

Yes, two buses and six trains. We did a circular route up into the center of Switz. To the capitol, Bern. Train ride to the Emmatal area between Bern and Luzern to Langanau. Back to Bern south to Lausanne and along beautiful lake Geneva to our valley city, Sion and bus up to our home stay in the Val d Herrens, it must have been a special day for the high schoolers as there were hundreds, glued to their devises - sounds like a lot but the trains run on time and if you can read their schedule you can go everywhere. Today a boat trip on the Thunnersee (Lake Thun) Here's a few pics from yesterday. Too tired to get the blog out last night. Lowell... read more

Yes, I know I missed yesterday, Maybe most of you did not notice? These were two really fine days. Yesterday we used the car to go to the next side valley to a nice village "Grimentz". It is a popular ski area in the winter. We took a gondola (which the French call a bandola?). It was really pleasent at the restaurant sun deck way up over tree line. This village was one of my favorites. Wish I could show you more images as I did take a few. Today was our first adventure taking the mountain bus way down the valley to Sion. There we took two trains (one at a time) to Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland (sort of the center of Switzerland) we have been here 20 years ago. Not any changes. Hope ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Arolla September 13th 2014

Hello from sunny Valais Switzerland, As the Kiwis say "It was a cracker of a day". Got oriented by driving through villages in The Val d Herren. (The valley of Men) I won't go Ito the names of villages as they won't mean anything to you, I just will mention the buildings we saw today were Swiss- Old Swiss and Antique Swiss. The roads are narrow and high and you better hope you don't meat a full size postal bus. Today I went hp a street where I had am inch on either side of my mirrors. I have the video to prove it. And I know I have a sliiiiight hearing issue but now I'm deaf on the right ear. Ahh that is the passengers side. Ii won't elaborate. Right now the church in the ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-East » Lugano » Gandria September 10th 2014

This is our last day trip in this area. We used the car today to drive north about 45 min. And then south about 1 1/2 hrs. into the Italian part of Switzerland. Went on a boat to a small village on Lake Lugano named Gandria. We were here umty-ump years ago. Very interesting but difficult walking (you wouldn't have enjoyed that part Annie) we had lunch there to celebrate our 52nd wedding anniversary. Made it back by 7:45 before dark. Tomorrow is packing and cleaning day. We leave for the SW of Switzerland on Friday early as we are doing a little detour into Austria to stock up on some food goods and diesel for the car. (Much cheaper) Here are some images from the Italian part. Lowell... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-East » Klosters September 9th 2014

Blog Sept 9' Today we took the Bus and a couple of trains to Klosters, a renown ski area where Prince Charles and the Royals go. Also this area is known because it's near Davos. For our money though Klosters is much more quaint and old Swiss. The great tunnel we went through is very long, Some info on the tunnel: On November 19th, 1999 the network of the Rhaetian Railway has been extended approx. 22 kilometers for the first time since 1914. On this day the 19.1 km long Vereina tunnel was opened officially. It connects the Prättigau with the lower Engadine. The line, which runs from (Landquart-) Klosters to Sagliains (-Scoul) is called the Vereina line. In the following text only the section Klosters- Sagliains is described. You can find information about the other ... read more
