Well our days are winding down here in SE Switzerland. 3 more days and we head for the SW of Switzerland (The Valais). Today we did a return trip to Ardez. why? Because we could. We liked that small village where the farmers are working the hay before the autumn ends there endeavors.they work hard with a lot of hand work, like raking the hay down hill with there long rakes. (See pic of farmer and wife carrying there rakes) Small narrow cobblestone streets, painted buildings and one small grocery store. Tomorrow we will journey north to some big winter ski areas. Davos and Klosters. Where Prince Charles likes to hang out. Hope you like the pics. Click on them they will get larger Lowell... read more

Today Sept 7, We actually slept in - til 8 a.m. Even though the bells ???at the church (about 50 feet) away ring loudly ? at 6 a.m. We didn't hear them. I guess yesterday's 2 1/2 hour hike ?? got to us. Today we got a late start and took the bus to St. Moritz to ride the train to Poschiavo, this track is part of the Bernina Express. Oh, for beauty, and startling views of the steep climb!! From 1775 to 2223 Meters. It doesn't sound like a lot but is very challenging for the train to make this assent On a track without a cog-wheel mechanism. This train goes through 55 tunnels, and 196 bridges and climbs over the Bernina Pass. Usually visitors put out mega bucks to take the "Bernina Express" With ... read more

Here's a little on our hike yesterday to the Fex Valley. We took our morning bus over the Julier Pass down to Silvaplana and another bus up the Engadin Valley to Sils-Maria. A two+ hour hike up and down not difficult. Weather could have been nicer. Cool but didn't rain. Here are some pics from yesterday . Lowell... read more

Hello everybody, These last few days we have toured through two very quaint villages. Soglio and Ardez. Both in the Engadine Valley. This architectural form is not found any where else in Switzerland or in Europe for that matter. Most of these buildings sre from the late 1500's to the 1600's. My favorite maybe the Adam and Eve House in Ardez. All the villages are not as nice as these. You need to do some research to know where to go. When we went to visit the village Guarda. We exited the train only to find that the village was a 40 minute hike almost straight up. Thankfully a small postal van came to our rescue. Our hiking legs are not what they used to be when we visited this region 20 years ago. Hope you ... read more

Hello everyone, Today, a few words from my traveling partner. This is Gloria: It's difficult to explain, perhaps a picture is worth a thousand words. When you travel from your birth country and visit another, the mindset, history and culture can be quite an influence on you, somehow every time I come to Switzerland, pieces seem to come together for me a bit more than the last visit. I wish I could speak even two of the four or five languages most young people speak when they live here (out of necessity). Because of the diverse surrounding countries and influence of German, Italian, French, and Romansh it is now days a must......Add English as the worlds choice a n d .....you have it. I am enamored with the beauty God has graced us with wherever we ... read more

Our last day in Austria and what do we do. Go over the border into Switzerland. We just drive the small roads and if it strikes us we turn up a really small road and head up hill. That was the case today. We ended up in a large restaurant complex called Egg Wald. 100's of people eating and drinking and enjoying the day. There were lots of people from buses which we do not know how they could have gotten there. Later we drove down to the Bodensee AKA The Lake Constance. To look at the ferry crossing from Switzerland to Germany. This evening we went out and had a Cordon Bleu. We split it. It was SO large we could hardly finish it. Tomorrow we leave Austria for the SE of Switzerland (The Engadin) ... read more

Finally a really nice day. Sunny and warm. We did a nice driving tour through the mountains of western Austria. Near the village of AU. No I didn't type that wrong it is the name of the village. The best thing is there's cable car that takes you high into the Austrian mountains. We spent 3 hours up there. We had a great time. We hiked to the large cross that has been placed at the very top of the mountain. And BTW it was not a difficult endeavor. Here are some of the photos from today. Lowell... read more

Yes we are still in Austria on the east bank of the Rhine River. Switzerland is only a 10 minute drive from where we are staying. It was a sun and rain day. We have always been impressed by the landscape of the Appenzell. Driving around the small roads you see lush green hills dotted with charming farms and Brown Swiss dairy cattle. What a wonderful life they have (the cows) Everything in Switzerland costs more than Germany and Austria. Fuel, food, clothing etc. Tomorrow we will do a driving tour of the Bregenzerwald. here in Austria. It will take us through the mountain valleys and should be quite interesting. All for now. A few images from today. Lowell... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Mittenwald August 26th 2014

Yesterday we have traveled from Barvaria to Koblach Austria which is across the Rhine River from the eastern border of Switzerland. it was only about 200 miles but stopping at Oberammergau and Mittenwald it took us most of the day. Both of these villages have a multiple of structures that are beautiful painted in a special way. They are painted in a 3D look. Look closely the painting is such that it gives the appearance of depth. So far today we have stayed close to home as it has been raining all day Hope you like the photos Lowell... read more

Today we went to a big gathering of people from all over the region. As far away as Austria and northern Germany. A big event of display of carriages pulled by 10 horses. All sizes down to miniature horses. There were 5000-7000 there. Quite a cultural gathering. It is our last day in this area as tomorrow we leave for Austria. We hope to stop at Oberammergau and Mittenwald on our way. Oberammergau is where they have the Passion Play every 10 years. The next one will be in 2020. Some pics from today. Maybe not all the captions as I can't describe the breeds. Lowell... read more
