After a couple of big days hiking, our laundry bag was getting quite full. I ventured out to find a laundramat and brought back breakfast and nice clean clothes even before Rach had gotten out of bed! Now I normally wouldn't start a blog talking about dirty washing however given we are staying 5 floors up, it took quite a bit of courage to hang outside the window and peg clothes to our little clothes line, all the while feeling my vertigo kicking in! We caught the train to Corniglia, the next village along from us here in Vernazza. Corniglia is the only village of the Cinque Terre that doesn't have a wharf. This is because its perched high up on the cliff. Unfortunately, someone didn't tell that to the blokes building the train line and ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre » Monterosso al Mare April 10th 2013

Today we woke up to SUN! We had 2 days of walking to go but the best trail we wanted to do was Vernazza to Monterosso which is actually technically shut. So we decided to do it anyway as we have seen lots of people walking it! We had heard that it was very treacherous and 2 miles of steep steps but stunning views so we were excited about the views but I was not excited about the stairs after how my back coped slash didnt cope yesterday with all the uphill stair climbing! So I downed a 3 euro 50 red bull, did some stretches in the sun to prepare! And off we went! It was such a gorgeous day! Perfect temperature and the sun was streaming through! We climbed for a bit and looked ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre » Monterosso al Mare April 9th 2013

We woke up and had breakfast in bed again...no calzones or coconut pastries for breakie this morning. We had Italy's other traditional breakfast, corn flakes. We couldn't keep justifying spending too much on breakie! I nipped down the street and ordered a slightly weaker coffee to start our day, latte machiattos, which to Rach's satisfaction was a lot easier to drink than yesterday's caffiene overload. We spent the morning planning our day, which was largely dependent on the Cinque Terre weather behaving itself, and going by last night's thunder storm and prediction for rain this afternoon, this was no easy task. We settled on heading to Levanto/Monterosso and doing a nice 'little' walk in between. Before venturing off, we decided to quickly have a sneak peak at 'trail 2 – Vernazza to Montarosso'; one of the ... read more

We woke up this morning to the sound of pouring rain! It was bucketing down! Great day to begin our walks between the Cinque Terre towns! We looked at the weather forecast and it said 88% chance of rain for the entire day. Right - Plan B! Plan B involved a lazy am of looking at diff walking routes for when it is fine and doing a bit of trip organisation from bed! I went out to bring back breakie to have in bed. There was no one out and about except locals who were speaking very fast Italian. I have a feeling a few of them were actually speaking to me but no idea! Hope I wasn't rude! I got us a couple of expresso machiattos (which Ben claimed was the closest thing to a ... read more

So, the day has finally arrived. With the flat bare and spotless, our wordly goods on the back of a cargo ship, we said our goodbyes to Edinburgh and hello to a world of adventures. Our first stop, Cinque Terre!!! We flew into a rather overcast Milan, and were hit with a wonderful experience...temperature above 10 degrees. It wouldn't have been much into double figures however was bliss to only get around with only 1 jumper on! We bussed it into Milan, taking the opportunity to grab a quick 15 min powernap as the 4.30am start was starting to take its toll. We arrived into Milan Central, checked the time...pizza o'clock. We headed straight to the nearest pizzeria, as Rach's stomach was starting to grumble and as we all know, she cannot handle early starts. Not ... read more

We rose and after a quick breaky, we wandered into town to do our staple souvenir shopping for (1) an Iceland shotglass and (2) a postcode that jumps out at Rach. We were a little early for the shops to be open so we got a drink from “Te & Kaffi”, I used my extensive Finnish language skills to determine that this was where Icelanders bought their teas and coffees from…they made a pretty good skinny latte too. After sipping on our coffees and finding the ‘right’ postcard, we realised we were running slightly late for our hotel pick for our geysers & waterfall tour! So we scampered back quick smart and just made the bus in time. We commenced our tour out of Reykjavic and within a couple of minutes the snow started. The landscape ... read more

Ah we had the best sleep last night! We woke up to our alarm at 9.30am and we were both dead to the world cos it was so pitch black outside!! We had a quick breakie downstairs cos the horses were awaiting our arrival! They picked us up at 10am for our Icelandic horse riding expedition but it was absolutely pitch black and made it feel like it was about 3.30am and we just wanted to go back to bed! They drove us about an hour to Islenski Hesturinn horse riding where we met the loveliest couple! After teaching us about the little Icelandic horses and how they are so disease free they don't even need to have jobs over here in Iceland. But as soon as they leave the country for a race or anything ... read more

Off to Iceland for the weekend!! We decided obviously it wasn't cold enough in Edinburgh - Let's crank it up a notch!! We were pretty excited and had booked a few tours etc through Iceland Air and got areally good deal on flights and hotel - £300! Which we were stoked about as we had both heard it was crazy expensive! So the weekend before we went out shopping for winter woolies. I bough a ridiculous new hat with ear flaps and gloves that were much too big my hands got lost in them, and Ben got a new beanie and gloves also! We were ready to go! We landed in Iceland and we were surprised to see it actually wasn't much colder than in Edinburgh but grey and wet which wasn't that nice. We landed ... read more

Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Bruges October 7th 2012

We all woke up with great desires to indulge in Belgium delicacies - waffles, frites and chocolate!! hit me baby! So we started at the b&b with more beautifully fresh croissants, met up with the others and went on a search for good chocolate and the starting point of the river cruise! We found both right next to each other as naturally there is a chocolate shop literally every 10 steps sometimes less! This is my kind of place! So we stocked up on chocs and boarded the very crammed wee boat. It was another nice day so it was such a nice cruise. We had pretty much seen most stuff before but it was nice and relaxing and we learnt a few more things that Chris didnt include in our tour yesterday! :) We even ... read more

So, we arrived in Bruges last night in the POURING and I mean POURING rain!! What a welcome! the flight from edinburgh was only an hour and a bit but we then had to get a bus into the city which was an hour, and then a train from the city of brussels to Bruges which was just over another hour! So even though it was a short flight it took a fair while to get into Bruges! Thankfully I have my brand spanking new amaizng kindle that just kept me engrossed the whole time - so much so it was annoying when we had to get off our current mode of transport and change cos I had to put the kindle down! What a geek! :P Anywho, we arrived into Bruges in the wet darkness ... read more
