Up early again today – 7am wake up to ensure we get to the gates of Troy before they opened the gates. Breakfast was slightly disappointing, for a 5-star hotel it certainly didn’t match its ratings. Anyway, muesli and yoghurt consumed and ready for a day of adventure, we took off for Troy. On arrival, through the gates we were met with a sight of the big famous wooden horse. Now, I won’t go into too much detail behind the history of Troy, I’ve probably lost many readers after yesterday’s step back in history. But in a nutshell, Troy is an ancient city that was destroyed by the Greeks in a war that started cos some young Trojan prince stole the wife of a Greek king. The Greeks, who couldn’t initially break through Troy’s massive walls, ... read more

Phone rings, hold music...guess that’s the 6.30am wake-up call. Early start for our big bus tour today. We chomped down our breaky (quite average it was too) and took off to beat the early morning rush hour, even though given the traffic issues we’ve seen since arriving in Istanbul, I think rush hour is every waking hour of the day. We headed west out of the city and along the European side-border. After half an hour we realised that our bus really was a mini-bus, the seats are quite cramped and I had to get used to Rach’s little knook position (her legs nicely sprawled out across my lap). The air con was quite nice with the blasting 35 degree heat outside however was stuck on either 2 settings, off or extremely cool. We stopped for ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Istanbul August 5th 2012

We were up at 8am this morning to have breakie with everyone at the hotel and then start exploring. So, out the door at 9am into the already scorching heat. Meant to be 35deg and 94% humidity or something today! We wandered up to the Hippodrome initially. This is where events used to take place in Istanbul and is used now I think for prayer and gatherings. Its been preserved pretty well but wasn’t hugely exciting to see. They had a “pencil” slash needle which was given to the turks from Egypt which was in amazing condition after a couple of thousand years! So we took a few snaps and then moved on to the blue mosque. This to my disappointment is not blue! Kind of blue on the inside but not really! It was pretty ... read more

So, the last few days we have been travelling from Edinburgh to London then to Istanbul. Had a few lil dramas like when we thought we had paid for 1 piece of checked in luggage but turned out once we got to the airport we hadn’t. Luckily easyjet doesn’t have a hand luggage weight limit so the only thing we had to forgo was the sunscreen! Noooo not the sunscreen! So we find our 3 lil containers of moisturiser and emptied them into the bin – it ended up smeared all over the rim of the bin – and filled them with some of the sunscreen so we didn’t have to sacrifice the whole thing! The womens all around was on that night so we had got to the airport to watch it and manage dto ... read more

Europe » Spain » Canary Islands » Tenerife July 23rd 2012

We woke to another sunny day in Tenerife. We will be sad to leave this lovely place. Last breakfast...so we decided to have the glass of free champagne on offer (well keith and Rach did, mine ended up in my breakfast and in my lap! i wish I could say it was a sudden gust of wind that knocked it over, but unfortunately it was my clumsy hand, waving around as I was explaining something!) Another omelette(poached eggs for Rach) made especially for us, feshly squeezed orange juice and croissants. Yum! Stocked up on lunch goodies as well...we are getting very slick at making our lunch rolls, wrapping them in tissue and sliding them into our nags without being seen! Keith had nabbed our seats by th pool again, and we sauntered from breakfast to the ... read more

Another day ahead of us the same as the last...excellent! Found our spot by the main pool, as usual, then breakfast by the pool, as usual. Keith found the perfect table, hidden behind the main area, but still right by the pool...perfect because we could wrap our lunch and slide it into our bags relative ease! Still no strawberries so we had to be happy with pineapple daiquiris (which we were!) delivered by our special black waiter (that sounds racist but we don't know his name so we distinguish them by calling them the friendly black waiter and the friendly Irish waiter!). Anyway, the friendly blcck waiter delivered our drinks but warned Rach that she was turning brown, and soon she would be his colour, and then he wouldn't like her as much! The usual swimming ... read more

Continuing on with the theme of Tenerife mornings we were awake early after having barely any sleep due to the constant lovely snoring tunes that were playing in our room all night! We naturally were excited about breakie and about getting lunch prepared at breakie after already trying our hand at being sneaky yesterday. So we scoped out a more secretive table for stealing purposes./ We all had the same breakie as usual. I enjoyed my bacon and poached egg on toast with a lil pain au chocolat toasted! Then we made filled rolls ad wrapped them all undercover and shoved them into handbags – naughty but oh so practical and money saving!! J After, we headed back upstairs for the routine sunscreening session and down to the pool. Unfortunately there was another wedding this arvo ... read more

We woke again after not alot of sleep but luckily our day didn’t require much rest as it was gonna be ful of rest. We decided after yesterdays terrible yet expensive lunch down at the pool, wed steal lunch at breakie and pocket it! So we, actually quite unsubtly packaged up some filled rolls and pain au chocolat and put them in our handbags. We then went down to the pool to find that our area was all roped off for some reason so we had to settle for some not as perfect sun spots by the pool! Listen to me – so spoilt! Haha nah they were good seats! But everyone was jammed down one end of the pool cos apparantley they were having a wedding tonight down the other end so were starting to ... read more

Right...no less snoring last night but luckily we didn’t have a strenuous day ahead of us! We started the day with yet again another yummy breakfast – eggs bacon, omelettes, fresh orange juice, pain au chocolats! Mm! Filled up and ready to lie by the pool for the day! We resumed our posie at the ed of the pool which required us literally to stand up and bend over to slide in the pool barely without even stepping! And that we did all morning. I started reading a really good book recommended by Patsy – A Thousand Splendid Suns. I was engrossed for most of the day yet highly entertained also by the family next to you. A boyfriend and his girlfriend with her family. The boys played catch with her in the water to which ... read more

After very little sleep for Rach and me, and lots of sound sleep with loud snoring for Keith, we started the new day...not as hot as Santorini, but still singlet and shorts weather. Before breakfast we got our towels and selected our posy right by the pool side...it seemed that’s what you do, or you miss out! We made our way down to the breakfast, which was really good! Has everything you could ever want (except waffles as rach said, and except a really good cappuccino as i say!) We also spotted champagne in buckets that we could have had...perhaps tomorrow. We did have omelettes made especially for us, poached eggs made as you wait...and of course croissants, both plain and chocolate! Mmmmm! Next stop...the pool. We lay by the pool in the sun (keith under ... read more
