It was an early start this morning for our big travel day down to San Jose in Costa Rica. We got up and wearily made our way to our waiting mini-bus at 4.45am. The sun was just rising as we pulled up at the Ometepe Island ferry station and hopped on for the 1.5 hour journey back across Lake Nicaragua. We arrived back on the mainland, said hello to our mini-bus driver who was the same guy who had driven us from Leon to Grenada, and then Grenada to the ferry for Ometepe. He was such a nice driver, and he reminded me of a Nicaraguan version of Mario from the Nintendo game. We took off from the ferry station at about 8.30am, our guide ensuring us that it wasn't far to the border and we'd ... read more

We had a sleep in today till about 9am which was nice. We were all really disappointed with Ometepe actually. It had been massively talked up but a few diff people and a few Canadians we met on the volcano hike actually said it was their fav place they have been in the whole 10 months they had been here! There is nothing here at all. There is 3 restaurants and one of them is our hotel, one is the vege place we tried yest and werent massive fans of! So, today everyone decided just to sleep in and then have a chilled out day. Our hotel was on the lakefront though and Lake Nicaragua was so so massive that it just looked like the beach. There is just millions of thousands of midges and flys ... read more

We had an 8.15am departure this morning which was a welcome change from some of our previous early morning travel days. We piled onto our mini-bus to take us the 1.5 hour journey down to San Jorge where we waited for a short period until our little ferry arrived. The ferry was more like a mini-barge, space enough for 2 vehicles and we all sat on top to enjoy the views as we sailed across to Ometepe Island. Ometepe Island sits in the middle of Nicaragua's largest lake, aptly named Lake Nicaragua. The meaning of its name literally means two mountains as the island has been formed by these 2 massive volcanos rising up out of the lake. Of the two volcanos, Concepcion is the largest and remains one of the world's most active volcanos, the ... read more

Olly Murs cranked out “Trouble Maker” at 7.01am this morning as we had an early start to our kayaking tour. We were finally staying at a hotel that providing breakfast and it wasn't too bad; really sugary cornflakes, fresh fruit salad and toast. Most of our tour group had booked on the kayaking trip and we loaded onto the waiting mini-bus at 8am. Its was a short drive down to Lake Nicaragua where we'd be paddling along for the next 4.5 hours. This lake is massive and completely fresh water. We got kitted out in life jackets which were 'one size fits all'. Well, they didn't really fit the girls and the kids ones were too small so they had to settle for uncomfortably massive life jackets. We strode down the beach (yep, the lake had ... read more

We got up this am at 7.01am, cos 7am was just a bit early! We had private transport this am so we could start a lil later which was good! We went down to Bigfoot Hostel again for breakie and had oatmeal to keep us going. It was a pretty short travel day today – only about 3 hours to Granada. We sat up the front and Ben wrote a blog while I just chille dout to music. We had one stop along the way in the capital city – Managua for some snacks etc. We arrived around midday and everyone automatically fell in love with Granada! There was a few volcanoes around and really colourful houses and cleaner streets thn Leon. It had a really cool feel to it. Not dis-similar to Antigua! It was ... read more

I've listened to your feedback (well, Gramps') and I'm going to try and enhance the descriptive nature of my blogs, encorpating more of the scenary and locals, instead of just enlighting you on the food we've been eating! So, to begin with, we allowed ourselves a little sleep-in given we were pretty knackered after a couple of long days travelling. We took a short walk to the aptly named Volcano Cafe for breakfast which did really nice fruit smoothies and porridge. We spent the morning wandering around the streets of Leon. It's not the most picturesque of towns that we've visited, and it tried to mimic other Central American cities with the different coloured buildings however most were quite run down. The roads were not cobble stones either therefore there was quite a lot of traffic ... read more

This am we awoke in the 3's to Olly singing to us cheerfully 'You're a Trouble-maker!' Usually this is such a welcome noise but not this am!! We had had about 4 hours sleep and were not ready to get up so we waited until the last possible minute and threw on some clothes, packed up and off we went. Today is all a bit of a daze really and not very exciting so will just give a brief overview. We all piled in taxis as we had done yesterday with our bags all tied on the bag of each card and we dopily convoyed to the bus station that we waited hours at on the way to Roatan so we knew it well. It was all shut up at this tie of them and so ... read more

We all woke up today really not wanting to leave our lil paradise island of Roatan! But unfortunately it was time. Ben woke up inspired to go for a run!! So on his running shoes went (he is determined to prove to me how much of a necessity it was for him to bring 4 pairs of shoes!) and off he went. He said the first half was lovely running across the beach but then it was all in a head wind comin back so he was completely knackered but felt great for doing it afterwards! Every who saw him out running was very impressed! We had the morning to wander round so we got up and headed to Earth Mama's again for breakie this time. Again we found more people from our group there! We ... read more

Today we woke up after a long sleep as we had a relatively early night last night after we rolled home after our giant steaks! We were excited cos today was Take 2 Dolphin Day! We sorted through some pics and then got up and went down into the town to get some breakie. We went back to the same place we were at yesterday as our omelette was amazing. And half of our group had the same idea as we bumped into about 5 of them there! We wandered about the town for while and then headed back to the hotel to chill out before our dolphin adventure. We grabbed a coconut curry chicken wrap to share and take-away from Earth Mamas and it was so yummy! We came into town again to get a ... read more

We woke up to a beautiful sunny day and got our first look of the resort by daylight. Its so cool! Our resort is right on the ocean with a pool area overlooking the sea. We wandered into town and went to a breakie restaurant that had a porch out the back right on the beach. We both ordered omelets (which were delicious) and freshly squeezed OJ to start our day. The restaurant was owned by this really annoying American woman who was treating the poor waitor boy like a school kid, telling him which way all the salt and pepper shakers had to face on tables...like, who cares! We were reliably (mis)informed by our guide that we were booked in for 1pm for the Dolphin Adventure and we were to meet at the resort reception. ... read more
