We have just have had 3 great days on Koh Tao. When we got off the catamaran (still choppy but not quite as bad as the way over) we all got filtered onto the appropriate bus. The Thais are very organised and they had everyone (at least 150) off the catamaran and on the buses amazingly fast. Once we set off we realised that our mini bus was being driven by a complete maniac! Once we left the pier it soon became apparent that there had been some type of accident and all the traffic was gridlocked in the direction we were going. At this point our driver pulled into the other lane. Initially we thought "Oh, we must need to turn right a couple of cars ahead" but no he just drove the entire length ... read more

Just had 3 great days on Ko Tao which is an island out 45km north of Koh Samui. Getting there was less fun as it took an hour and a half on a very choppy catamaran. The weather was not great and it was very windy. We are staying on Hat Sai Ree which is the main beach. It is 1.7km long so there is plenty of sand! The day we arrived the weather was pretty poor and it rained a lot including a few torrential down pours. We did go for a very wet walk down the beach. It did brighten up though and we were able to go for a swim in the late afternoon. The sea is so warm here, it is like being in a bath! The next two days were much ... read more

We are back in Thailand on the beach portion of our holiday. We arrived here yesterday by the smallest plane so far. This one only had room for 50 passengers and we did not go down the tunnel to get on - there were only 5 steps into the plane and they just flicked out of the plane! It was not too bumpy a flight and it only took just over an hour to get here. As you have no doubt guessed by the title it is raining here!! To be fair it is more a case of torrential down pour every now and again then. As it is so warm it does not really matter. We have swam in the pool and the sea and done some very long (and hot) walks mainly on the ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang » George Town March 7th 2008

So we have just had 2 days in Penang and although it was not our favourite place on the trip we had a good time. We did wonder if we were missing something though as everyone else seems to love Penang. To be fair anything would have been a bit of a let down after Luang Prabang. Penang did have some plus points though. Firstly where we were staying was extremely cool. It was a restored Chinese Mansion (Choeng Fatt Tze) that had been converted into a hotel. It is quite a tourist attraction and there were groups of people on guided tours twice a day! The great thing about staying there was that you got free run of the place and you could take photos wherever you liked which was good for me. We started ... read more

As the title suggests today has been a day of travelling. We left Luang Prabang this morning and got a flight to Bangkok. Bizarrely we left about 30 minutes early, lets hope everyone who waned to be on that flight was. For all the bad press that Air Lao gets they were actually ok. The plane did not drop put of the sky, they left on time and we always got our luggage back super quick, although there were only 20 on our flight. We then had to hang about at Bangkok airport while we were waiting to board our flight to Penang in Malaysia. Boarding was an experience to say he least. We seemed to be sharing the plane with people so desperate to get on that they did not mind who they pushed out ... read more

Yesterday we went trekking and kayaking. There was a slight change of plan as someone had died in one of the villages we were going to visit so understandably they did not want to bring a group of tourists there. It worked out well for us as the kayaking was great and we ended up paying less then everyone else as the trekking was cheaper than the combi tour. We walked for about 3 hours and stopped off at one village before having lunch. Then we got into the kayaks and kayaked down river for about 10Km. The kayaking was great and even thought the water was pretty low and therefore not many rapids it suited me fine. The rapid sections we did were rather on the tricky side and we very nearly capsized! It was ... read more

Just spent our first full day in Luang Prabang and as the title of the blog suggests it is lovely. It is a very chilled out kind of place with loads of great restaurants and cafés. It also has a great night market where I have bought far too much stuff. It is NEVER all going to fit in my rucksac! Today we visited some temples including Wat Xieng Thong which is one of the best temples we have visited so far. It was just beautiful with loads of amazing mosaics. Needless to say I was very snap happy. We spent the rest of the day wandering, chilling out and visited a couple more smaller wats. In the evening we ate at L'elephant which was a really great French restaurant. It was very expensive by Lao ... read more

We are now in Luang Prabang in Laos and it is cold! Well maybe not cold exactly but considerably chillier than Chiang Mai. When we arrived it was 19 degrees and now it is a lot cooler than that. I have got my jeans on and a warm top. Being that we don't really have any warm clothes we can only hope that it does not get any colder! Due to time and the fact we did not want to spend two days on a boat we flew to Luang Prabang. The plane was pretty small and because of that the flight was a bit on the rough side. Definitely not for the nervous flier! When we got out of the airport we paid $5 for a taxi only to find that the lao definition of ... read more

What a busy 2 days we have had! Spent yesterday exploring some of the many temples of Chaing Mai. There are loads of them. We tried to limit ourselves to a few so we did not get "templed out!" Our first stop was Wat U Mong (yes, I know it has a funny name) which is a bit out of the city centre. We went there by tuk tuk which is always fun once you have negotiated a price you are happy to pay. This time we had where we wanted to go written down in Thai. However hard we try we cannot make ourselves understood! We are staying at the Sira hotel. We always say "Si Ra" and they look blank. We then show them the hotel card and they go "ah si ra" As ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai February 26th 2008

We are now in Chiang Mai which is in the north of Thailand. We opted to fly rather than take a 10 hour bus or train trip. We went with AirAsia which is Asia's answer to Ryanair. Apart from the fact the flight was delayed for an hour it was good. We had a pretty lazy day on our fist day as we had to get up early to catch the flight. We did visit one temple - Wat Chiang Man Today we went to the Chiang Mai Thai Cookery school which was really good. The day started with a tour of the market showing us some of the things we would be cooking then it was back to the school to cook. We cooked a lot of food! I think it is fair to say ... read more
