Europe » Spain » Castile-La Mancha » Toledo September 25th 2008

We made it!! If you had seen the state of the roads then you would know why that is worthy of 2 exclamation marks. We are staying in a very central hotel which is great but that did mean we had to tackle the very narrow roads to get here. They are only just one car wide and that is one small car. Why people bring big cars here I have no idea. Toledo is home of the tour group, and not any old tour group. These ones act like army ants - they engulf and overpower anything in their path! On several occasions while we were relaxing in our favourite square we watched unsuspecting tourists get swallowed by them! Toledo is also home to the best restaurant we have come across. It is called La ... read more

Europe » Spain » Extremadura » Trujillo September 20th 2008

The next stop on our trip was Trujillo. This is a smallish town in Extremadura. I think it is fair to say we are well off the English tourist trail and we do need to use our rather bad Spanish. We are in the nicest hotel so far. It is an old convent that is now a 4* hotel. The conversion has been done well and there are some super modern lights and art work which look really good. The room where we had breakfast used to be a chapel. Impressive! The problem with such a nice hotel is that we tend to stick out. The rest of the guests are well heeled Spanish tourists and don't seem to have the rucksacs, hats and trainers that we have! I think they must be wondering where we ... read more

We have now left the hustle and bustle of city life behind and we are in the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park. It is in the mountains and we had to drive along some very wiggly roads to get here. Today we went on a big hike. We drove about 10km from the hotel (which is very alpine chalet like) to the start of the trail. We then walked to Laguna Grande. It took us about 3 hours. There was a hut there (Refugio Elola) which is where hikers can sleep. Very conveniently it had a restaurant so we had some soup before we set off on the hike home (well the car park) The walk was really good even though we were exhausted at the end. ... read more

Europe » Spain » Castile & León » Salamanca September 16th 2008

We are currently in Salamanca which was about 1.5hrs drives away. We have learnt our lesson with TomTom and this time we typed in the address rather than just pick the hotel off the list. We made it with no problems, lets hope that continues. We are living it up in a four star hotel - it is the type of luxury we could get used to. Look at the view from the pool. Jealous? Salamanca is a great city and it seems very relaxed. It has a massive student population and one of the oldest universities in Europe. The university has really impressive building. One of the main gates has a very impressive façade. It attracts a lot of attention as somewhere on it there is a frog. There are various stories about the frog ... read more

Europe » Spain » Castile & León » Tordesillas September 14th 2008

We have made it to Tordesillas in Spain. We flew to Valladollid this morning where we picked up our hire car (a Fiat Punto). We only had a 30 minute drive which was enough as we have to get used to driving on the other side of the road as well as changing gear with the other hand. Tim did the driving and it not prove too problematic. We have got TomTom which is pretty useful although it did send us in the completely wrong direction at the end. Then it kept saying “you have reached your destination” when we were clearly nowhere near our hotel and halfway down some deserted A road. Much swearing occurred! We ventured into town in the afternoon for a look round and some food. It was afternoon by our standards ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Cambridgeshire » Wimpole May 11th 2008

Tim and I decided to give up our Sunday and do the Oxfam walk today, which as the name suggests is a walk to raise money for Oxfam. I know doing the walk doesn't really count as travelling but seeing as I am not going on holiday for a while I thought I would write a blog anyway! There has been a bit of a heatwave of late so we had an amazingly sunny day for our walk. It was 13 miles which was a nice distance. It took us 4.5 hours from start to finish including a bit of a sit down in the middle. The walk started at Wimpole Hall, the National Trust property, and took us west towards East Hatley then north towards Longstowe before heading south back towards Wimpole. It was very ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Lisbon & Tagus Valley » Sintra April 29th 2008

Went on a day trip to Sintra today. Sintra is a town about 30kms away. We got the train which was a bargain €1.65 each way. Why aren't trains at home this cheap? We visited a really cool castle when we were here. It is Palácio da Pena which is this brightly coloured castle high above the town. The architecture was a little bizarre in places (think cartoon castle) but I really liked it. We also explored the town, ate another custard tart and visited the National Palace. This is a medieval palace with 2 of the largest chimneys you have ever seen. You could see the chimneys from all over the town. There is also a Moorish castle in Sintra but there are only so many castles you can fit into a single day!... read more

Europe » Portugal » Lisbon & Tagus Valley » Lisbon April 28th 2008

We are in Lisbon! It is very nice but very hilly so we are exhausted! We never thought we would appreciate the flatness of East Anglia. Due to the hilliness of Lisbon and the fact that most of the streets are very narrow and windy we spend most of our time not being entirely sure where we are! We have had 2 days exploring Lisbon. the first day we went to Belém which is a district that is a 6km away. It is home to a Pastéis de Belém - a shop which is famous for making custard tarts. Needless to say we had to go here and sample one! The shop was very busy and apparently on busy days they sell 10s of thousands of these things! We also saw some of the other sights ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Cambridgeshire » Cambridge March 15th 2008

As the title suggests we are back in chilly UK and it only took 25 hours to get here! We had to get up at 5:30am to get a taxi at 6 to go Ko Samui airport. After a very short flight to Bangkok we had to wait 4 hours for our flight back to Heathrow. Luckily we were flying direct. Once we landed it was a further 5 hours before we were finally home. I reconfirmed that I hate Heathrow especially the central bus station. It is always freezing and our bus is always late! We arrived 30 minutes before it was due to leave and it never appeared so we ended up waiting an hour and a half. I was not impressed. All that travelling was worth it though as we had a great ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui March 13th 2008

The holiday is almost over!! Just got the long trek back to the UK to go (can't wait!) The last day and a half of holiday was spent back on Bophut Beach on Koh Samui. This time we are up the other end of the beach in the fisherman's village which was more to our liking. The hotels are smaller here and there are a lot more places to eat. The other end is a bit too big resorty for my liking. Our hotel is run by an English couple. The woman could be Margo from The Good Life. She even looks like her! Whilst we have been here we have walked on the beach, played in the pool and generally chilled out. I am not looking forward to getting back to cold Britain!... read more
