Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Albany March 10th 2009

We have now left the lovely beaches of Esperence and are in Albany, home of the Dog Rock! This has got to be one of the most bizarre tourist attractions so far. It is essentially a huge rock that is supposed to look like a dogs head. This would be fine if it actually looked like a dog's head. As far as we could see it was a large rock with a collar painted on it but that was it. We took the obligatory photo, so you can see what you think. When we were in tourist information they told us that the Lonely Planet guide has been none too complementary about Dog Rock! Clearly we were not alone in our thoughts. Albany itself was not really our thing. We don't really like Australian cities that ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Esperance March 8th 2009

We have now left the outback and are back on the South coast in Esperance. It was a relatively short drive of 4 hours. We have driven over 2000kms already! Although it is a bit dull at times the roads are very quiet (no chance of getting stuck in a traffic jam around here) and we do have the ipod. The itrip (which lets us play the ipod through the radio) is one of the most useful things we brought with us. We are listening to Tim’s entire music collection of 900 songs on shuffle so we never know what is coming next. Yet again we are in a unit on a caravan site. This one is lovely, probably the best so far. We are really liking the whole unit thing. We like cooking for ourselves ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Kalgoorlie March 5th 2009

Today we drove, and drove and drove! We are now in Kalgoorlie which is about 600km west of Perth. Once we had left Fremantle it was a long straight road all the way! I am sure we did not turn for at least 6 hours. The roads are so quiet that you barely pass any traffic. There were quite a lot of road trains (giant lorries with 3 trailers) but the novelty of them was beginning to wear a bit thin towards the end. There were a few things along the way to distract us. We passed a museum that was shaped like a giant SLR camera. The museum seem to have shut up shop which didn't surprise me too much as we were miles from anywhere. Due to my love of photo taking I obviously ... read more

We went on a day trip to Rottnest Island today which is a 25 minute boat ride from Fremantle. It was such a lovely place with gorgeous beaches and coves. The boat was fairly full and the townships had quite a few people in but once we were out of them everywhere was empty. We hired bikes and now have sore bottoms! We cycled all round the island which was 24km (I think). That is a lot of cycling for me. We cycled from one lovely beach to another. We had to get quite picky towards the end as we could not and stop and go for a paddle at everyone or else we would have been there for the whole holiday! We did have a swim at one of them. The water was quite warm ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Kalbarri March 2nd 2009

We have now travelled further up the west coast and are in Kalbarri. We are on anther caravan park in another unit. It is really nice and it is ensuite. We have big lounge-diner as well as the Kitchen, our room and other room with bunk beds in. We can also see the sea when we are sitting on the sofa! The units so far have been great (lets hope it continues). I think the move from backpacking to flashpacking is definately complete! As Kalbarri is right on the coast we hand a long beach walk on our first day which was nice. When I went out later to take a photo I saw a big flock of galahs! I was obviously highly delighted about this and took lots of photos. They were very tame and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Cervantes February 28th 2009

We have picked up our hire car and are now cruising around WA. Our first stop was Cervantes which is about 3 hours north of Perth. The town itself (or should that be village) is tiny but is close to Nambung National Park which was our main reason for comuing here. We are staying on a caravan site(the Ozzies love caravaniong and camping). Obviously we are not camping, we are staying in a 'unit'. I thought that this would be a mobile home but it seems to be a mini house. There is a living room/kitchen with a TV. There is a double room and a room with bunkbeds in. It is not ensuite as it was a budget unit, but this is a bank holiday weekend so we had to take what we were given! ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Perth » Perth City February 27th 2009

G'day! We have made it to Oz. It was only a 5 hour flight from Singapore which was all the better for the fact we managed to use our airmiles so it was free. Perth is a nice city and we have mainly spent our time wandering about. As it gets dark quite late here we have plenty of time for exploring. After the obligatory trip to the supermarket yesterday (I now have 100 tea bags!) we went for a short walk. Even though it was gone 7 there was not a cloud in the sky and it was still warm and sunny. The highlight of the walk was seeing huge flocks of little corellas. (They are white parrots if you are not up on Ozzie birds) Needless to say I took loads of photos from ... read more

Asia » Singapore February 26th 2009

We are currently in Singapore. We are now at Chiangi airport waiting for our flight to Perth. Singapore has a great airport and as a result there are free internet terminals all over the place. Heathrow could learn a lot from here! When we arrived on Tuesday it only took us about 15 minutes from landing to get off the plane, clear immigration and get our bags back. We spent all of yesterday walking about and exploring. As this was our 4th visit to Singapore we did not have loads of 'must sees'. We started by visiting a Hindu temple before heading to Clarke Quay and then along the river. This is quite a colonial area and there are some great buildings. It is also the CBD so there are some massive skyscrappers. Whilst we were ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Carmona September 28th 2008

We have just visited Carmona. It was the last stop on our holiday and it wasn't quite the relaxed last day we had planned! We left lovely Cordoba just before mid day and drove to Carmona which is a little over an hour away. We thought we would spend a night here as it is a lot closer to Seville airport, where we had a flight home from. We made it to the outskirts of town without any issues. The problems started when we tried to get to our hotel. We had chosen the hotel based on the fact it was easy to get to (how wrong were we!) It was on a road just off the main road through town. We found the turning to said road without any problems and got half way down ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Córdoba September 27th 2008

The wet weather is behind us and it is hot and sunny again. We are in Andalusia and there are so many olive trees. I don't think Tim appreciated me saying “what a lot of olive trees” every 5 minutes on the drive here. One of the reasons that I wanted to visit Cordoba is the Mezquita, and it certainly didn't disappoint. The mesquita is a massive mosque that has been converted into a Catholic cathedral. Because of this the interior has an interesting mix of styles. Inside there are lots of orange and white giant arches that are supported by over 800 columns. The photos don't due it justice, not to mention that they are a bit fuzzy as it was fairly dark in there. Some of the arches have been painted with Frescos as ... read more
