We have made it to Bangkok. The journey was very long. I think it took just over 20 hours between us leaving our house to us arriving at our hotel in Bangkok. This was not helped by the fact that the plane was delayed for over an hour. We had already been at Heathrow for hours when we found this out. The flight wasn't too bad though and they let us sleep all the way without keep pestering us with food and drink. Managed to fit in one film in during the 11 hour flight as the rest of the time was spent trying but failing to sleep! By the time we arrived last night there was pretty much time to get some food before falling asleep. Today we decided to do some sightseeing and try ... read more

Europe » France » Pays-de-la-Loire September 22nd 2007

Several months have elapsed since my last blog, and therefore our last travels. To rectify this we decided a short trip to the Loire Valley was in order. We flew to Tours (cheap Ryanair flights) and decided to base ourselves there. We arrived in Tours mid morning and aside from a slight hotel hiccup we were soon ready to explore the town. We saw the Cathedral, The Loire itself and various nice squares and buildings. I saw my first château! Tim, having already visited everywhere in France in his youth, had already seen plenty of châteaux but I was impressed. The château in Tours is pretty small and does not have the impressive gardens that are common in some of the others. The following day we decided to cycle to Villandry to visit the château. The ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Cambridgeshire » Cambridge May 23rd 2007

It's true! The honeymoon is indeed over and we are back in the UK. After driving over 4300KM around Namibia without any CDs to put in the CD player and no radio stations to receive on the radio and only our own singing to amuse ourselves the trip is over. We saw (and ate!) springbok, kudu, gemsbok and ostrich. We saw (but obviously didn't eat) elephants, zebras, lions, black faced impalas, rhino and meerkats amongst other things. Tim drank 25 bottles of Windhoek larger and 15 glasses/bottles of Hansa/Tafel. I drank 22 glasses of wine. We ate more food than you can imagine! A mouse ate my shoelaces! Our trusty Toyota Corolla made it round and officially had "no new damage" which was a relief considering the rattling noises it was making at one point! We ... read more

Africa » Namibia » Kalahari May 22nd 2007

We are at our last stop on our tour and we are cold! We are in the Kalahari and although the sky is bright blue and the sun is shining it is only about 10 degrees. It was actually freezing last night. We are staying in a very nice bungalow on stilts that over looks the desert. The first night we were here we were the only people in the whole place! Tim claims he booked the whole place out as a treat! On our first afternoon we went on a cheetah feeding drive. They have 4 cheetahs that cannot be released into the wild for various reasons so they are kept here in a large enclosure. We got in a safari vehicle and were driven into the enclosure so they could be fed. They get ... read more

Africa » Namibia » Fish River Canyon May 19th 2007

Today was another long drive, over the normal 4 hours! The road from Luderitz was mainly tarred so it was an easy drive. We stopped on the way to see some Desert Horses; these have evolved to go without water for up to 4 days, far longer than Tim can go without a cold Windhoek lager on this trip! We arrived in time for lunch at Canon Lodge, one of the most attractive places we've stayed, it's lots of bungalows built around huge rock boulders that sometimes are partially built into the rooms. We spent a lot of time watching the Rock Hyrax (also known as dassies) which are related to Elephants but look like fat Guinea Pigs. After a trip through the Valley of Salads (their name for a salad buffet!) we went to bed. ... read more

Africa » Namibia » Luderitz May 17th 2007

We are now in Luderitz and therefore back on the coast. It was a bumpy 4 hours on gravel roads followed by another hour or so on tarred road before we got here. We did pass through the Namib Rand national park on the way and managed to spot the usual array of animals including springbok and gemsbok/oyrx. I felt the need to take more animal photos (don't ask me why). Later on we saw 3 bat eared foxes, which was good, as we had not seen them before, and they are not normally out in the day. We also saw a huge black snake in the road. Don't know what it was but we decided against hanging about to find out. Luderitz is supposed to be a big city but we are yet to be ... read more

Africa » Namibia » Sossusvlei May 15th 2007

After another 4 hour drive - it takes at least 4 hours to get anywhere round here - we are at the Desert Homestead. Like most places it is in the middle of nowhere. Nowhere in this case is on the outskirts of the Namib Naukluft park and near the tallest sand dunes in the world. The journey here did have one highlight and that was that we crossed the Tropic of Capricorn. There was a huge sign to inform us of this fact so needless to say we had to get out to take a (well several) photos. Today we headed to Sossusvlei in search of the dunes and after a slight bit of driving in the wrong direction we found them. They were huge - over 300 metres in places. As well as seeing ... read more

Africa » Namibia » Swakopmund May 14th 2007

We are now in Swakopmund which is the adrenaline capital of Namibia. It is not quite on the same scale as Queensland in NZ but there is still a fair amount of stuff to choose from, most of which seem to be based around sand in some way! Swakopmund has the coast on one side and the Namib desert on the other. When we arrived the wind was blowing off the desert and it was like being in front of a hair dryer and getting blasted with sand at the same time! When we were driving here the sand storm was so bad that we could hardly see the road or the car (yes, it is busy enough here that there are other cars on the road) in front of us. The next day was more ... read more

Africa » Namibia » Cape Cross May 11th 2007

Seals are smelly! I did already know this from NZ where a small number of seals made a terrible smell. This was NOTHING compared to the stench of Cape Cross. There are 200,000 seals here and they all smell! When we first got out of the car it was pretty overwhelming. You did get used to it pretty quickly though. The seals were amazing though mainly because there were so many of them. They were as far as the eye could see. It was like being in a BBC documentary! The only not so pleasant thing about it all was the fact that there were loads of black backed Jackals about waiting to prey on any unattended seal pups. Once we had finished at the seal reserve we went back to our very nice accommodation for ... read more

Africa » Namibia » Twyfelfontein May 10th 2007

We arrived in the hottest place in the world after a long drive. We did stop along the way, once for petrol where we felt like we were actually in Africa with hustle, bustle and hawkers everywhere, and once to see a Petrified Forest (presumably it had seen Laura driving on the rock laden roads!). The Lodge is nice although we can't walk more than 5 paces without looking at the Lizards and Bushy Tailed rock rats (stick a bushy tail on a rat and you are happy for them to run around your feet....). After a lovely lunch in the kind of place the Flintstones would go for a posh meal we relaxed by the pool. The next morning we went to see the rock paintings this area is famous for, we had a guided ... read more
