It was the last day of FeeJee experience today. We got the bus from Volivoli back to Nadi. We stopped in a town for lunch before heading to Sabeto hot mud pools. The mud was very warm and squidgy. The longer you stood still the deeper you sank in it! There was also a mud free hot pool but it was too hot for us to go in. The place we are staying in seems nice and has 2 swimming pools and several restaurants. Tim is drinking Fiji Bitter while he still has the chance. We are off to the Cook Islands tomorrow afternoon. When we arrive it will be this evening! ... read more

Left Suva yesterday morning and headed towards the north of the island. Our first stop was Wailotua Village where we took part in a sevusevu (kava) ceremony. The root of the kava plant is ground up and the powder is used to infuse water to make a drink. It is supposed to have narcotic properties and is generally thought to relax you. It is apparently very good for stress and depression. The kava is made in a special way and you have to accept the first cupful you are offered or you will offend the chief. Also it is polite to drink it in one go. It looks a bit like muddy water and tastes a bit like it too! I am not sure about the effects – it makes you sleepy so we were all ... read more

We did a MAJOR hike today. We left Mango Bay and headed further round the coast a bit before going inland. There we transferred to a truck that drove us half way up a hill before we all got out to start walking. When we left the bus it was very warm and sunny but unfortunately that did not last and when we were in the back of the truck it started to rain. This was proper rain not a light drizzle. By the time we had to start walking it was pouring – it was like being in a shower and I am not joking! At least it was warm. After about an hour or so going up this mountain we actually entered the forest. It was so cool. It was proper jungle trekking although ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Viti Levu » Coral Coast January 30th 2006

We started our FeeJee experience trip today. We decided to risk travelling with them (as there is not much choice) and hope that they are not too much of an 18 – 30 party bus! They were late picking us up but apparently that is just Fiji Time! Our first stop was Nataidola Beach. A lovely beach with the warmest sea I have ever been in. It was like being in the bath! We spent several hours on the beach chilling out. There were several footballs on the bus so we got to play various ball games in the sea. It was nice to be part of a big group again. The sea was very calm apart from the occasional massive wave. I got completely wiped out by one, which Tim though was hilarious! After that ... read more

Bula! We are in Fiji. We got here yesterday after a (relatively) short flight from Auckland. When we arrived there was a band playing music and we got strings of beads made from shells. All very tropical. We are staying at the Beach Side Resort, which is nice, and we have our own little bure (cottage). We have been taking it easy as Tim is still recovering and we need a rest before the next leg of our adventure! It is very hot and humid here although it has rained pretty much non-stop! Lets hope it brightens up a bit tomorrow when we start our trip around Vitu Levu (main island).... read more

We are now in Auckland. When I said Tim was feeling a bit better I was wrong! I think it was the quiet before the storm. It was definitely the quiet before the day from hell! It turns out that he has campylobacter! It is some type of bacterial infection that can be caused by eating contaminated food or water, or eating raw meat. As far as we are aware Tim did none of those things but apparently it is rife in this area and it is probably just related to poor food hygiene such as using something that was not washed up properly. We know all this as Tim went to the doctors. Under normal circumstances this would have not been particularly troublesome apart from the fact that the nearest doctors was at the hospital ... read more

Tim is ill! We knew it would happen sooner or later but we thought it would be in Asia. It was only a matter of time before one of us got the lurgi! Tim has had some nasty stomach bug that came on yesterday lunchtime on our way to Ahipara. He seems a bit better now but we had to cancel our trip to Cape Regina today. On the plus side I got to go boogie boarding which was excellent fun. You could go on the beach which was right outside the hostel. They even lent you boards for free. It is not as easy as it looks but a got the hang of it. I left Tim on the beach with the camera to film and photograph me in action!... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Islands January 21st 2006

Having a great time in the Bay of Islands. Got here on Thursday and it was raining (first rain we had seen for ages) so we had a pretty quiet afternoon. Just made a brief trip into the town centre and the supermarket. Yesterday we went on a cruise of the Bay which was great. As well as a cruise it was a dolphin spotting trip and I am pleased to say we saw loads. We were very lucky on the dolphin spotting front as people we spoke to yesterday only saw two. We saw several pods. The first type of dolphins we saw were bottle nose dolphins. They kept swimming right up to the boat and jumped out of the water several times. I never realised that they were quite so big (they can get ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Orewa January 18th 2006

After the black water rafting we headed to Orewa which is just north of Auckland. We decided to stop here to break up the Drive to the Bay of Islands. The most amazing thing about coming here was that we met Marion and David. We first meet them in Lake Tekapo and then in Mount Cook back in December. Our paths also crossed in Franz Josef. We were really surprised to meet them again in National Park as they said they were not going to do the Tongariro crossing but they had had a change of plan. By this time we were good friends so when we left there we said our goodbyes. When we arrived in Orewa today and checked into the hostel they were the first people we met. We could not believe it ... read more

We have been black water rafting today and it was fantastic, if not a little scary! It is not really rafting at all, more a cross between caving and tubing. You get kitted out in wetsuits, helmets with lights on the front and these very tasteful white boots. You then get given a big rubber ring to sit on and you are ready to go. We started off by walking in the caves which are between ankle deep and waist deep in water. The first bit of tubing involved getting on our rings and lying right back so we could float through a section of cave with a very low roof. You had to lie horizontal or else you would not fit. I found this bit a scary! After that it was sections of walking and ... read more
