We left Hahei today to drive to Waitomo – we are going black water rafting tomorrow. The only highlight of the journey was that we went to Cambridge! It is not as nice as the ‘real’ Cambridge. It is MUCH newer for a start and it is a fraction of the size. There was also no university as far as we could see. Lots of people said “It is like the one in the UK”! I can only assume they have not been there. It is a nice enough small town and it gave us a chance to take the obligatory photo and buy a post card.... read more

We left the East Cape yesterday and headed for the Coromandel Peninsula. It was not the most interesting drive but we did pass a giant kiwi fruit! The Coromandel peninsula is lovely. We are staying in Hahei, which is a really nice beach town. It takes us about a minute to walk to the beach! We went for a quick swim yesterday. The beach gets huge waves so we had fun splashing about in the surf. Today we walked along the coast to Cathedral cove, which is this gorgeous cove, which has a huge natural arch. You can walk though the arch to another beach. In the afternoon we went to Hot Water Beach, which is a beach that has hot springs under the sand. This mean you can build yourself a hot tub! In some ... read more

After all the activities of the last week it is definitely time for some R&R. We are now in Maraehake Bay on the East Coast at this super relaxing hostel. It is in the middle of nowhere. We can see the sea out of the bedroom window! It is about 5 paces away. We have been very lazy the last couple of days. We have filled our days with walking on the beach, looking in rock pools and some kayaking. They had free kayaks here so we decided to paddle round the bay which was lovely. Off to the Coramandal Peninsula tomorrow for some more beaches and fun in the sun. ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Rotorua January 12th 2006

We are now in Rotorua and doing more extreme things! We went zorbing today. Zorbing involves being in a large plastic ball and rolling down a hill! Think giant hamster ball and you get the idea. Tim and I went in the same ball together along with a bucket of water (don't know why). They tell you to stand and then release the gate so you start rolling. We tried to stay standing but it was impossible. Felt a bit dizzy by the time I got to the bottom of the hill but it was good fun. I am sure this is what being in a washing machine feels like! In the afternoon we went to the Polynesian Spa which is a series of hot pools. The main pool is a mineral pool which is kept ... read more

Being that we managed the Tongariro Crossing we decided to reward ourselves with a jet boating trip. It was wicked! You zoom along the river at great speed and then every so often you do huge 180 degree spins (bit like a handbrake turn) This, needless to say, results in lots of spray. The best thing about it was that the boat went over rapids! The first time we flew through the air but the next time we hit the water at a different angle and we got drenched! It was so much fun though. The other thing with jet boating is that the drivers seem to want to drive VERY close to cliffs and other objects then swerve the boat out of the way at the last second!... read more

We got wet!

We did the Tongariro Crossing today. It is a 17km hike that takes you across several craters and by the side of a volcano. The superfit people can hike up this as an aside to the main track! The hike, although hard going in places, was excellent. There were really good views and the scenery was amazing. A lot of this area was used in Lord of the Rings and we saw "Mt Doom". The hike involved two really steep climbs. They were far more of a climb than I was expecting but we both made it after lots of scrambling! The weather was so changeable in the mountains. I had never seen anything like it. When we got to the south crater it was clear blue skies. Within a couple of minutes the whole crater ... read more

As well as art deco architecture another thing that Napier is famous for is wine. Napier is in Hawkes Bay, a famous wine growing region. Not wanting to let all this wine pass us by we decided to have a day touring the wineries! Luckily for me Tim decided to drive (we decided against going on one of the tours as they seemed expensive when all you got was the transport. We thought this way we could save the money and buy lots of wine!) There are lots of wineries to choose from so for no good reason we decided to start at Mission Estate Winery which is the oldest winery in New Zealand. We got a free tour which told us the history of the winery. It was set up by a group of French ... read more

We are in Napier now which is famous for its Art Deco architecture amongst other things. The place was destroyed by an earthquake in 1931 so when it was rebuilt it was in the Art Deco style. It does make it a very nice city to walk around especially as I really like that style of architecture and there are lots of shops selling nice things from that period. We drove here today in our new hire car. We have gone up in the world, due to a free upgrade, so we now have a silver Nissan Bluebird. I have not tried driving it yet but Tim seems to like it especially as it has a bit of power and seems able to accelerate up hills unlike the last car! On the Drive here from Wellington ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Wellington January 4th 2006

We are in Wellington at the moment and it SO windy. We arrived on Monday by ferry and the crossing was very smooth which was surprising as when we left Kaikoura it was raining and very windy and the car was buffeted the whole way. We did read in the paper on Tuesday that there had been hurricane winds all over NZ with lots of forest fires is some regions and over 170mm of rain in 24hrs in others. For once it was not raining on us! Yesterday we explored the city. It is a great city and we both really liked it although it was very quiet. There was hardly any traffic at all. We started out our tour by getting the cable car (it is really a funicular) to the botanical gardens. We walked ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Kaikoura January 1st 2006

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!! I hate the weather! We did not get to do our swimming with dolphins yesterday as it was too windy! It was not that windy in town but apparently it was very windy out to sea and a trip that had gone out earlier had to come back early. The thing that made it all the more irritating was the fact that we had booked it months ago before we left the UK as they get booked up weeks and weeks in advance. We think we will try and go somewhere in the North Island. We did go on a really good walk around the Kaikoura Peninsular though. It was a loop walk that took you along the shoreline then back along the cliff top. There were loads of seagulls (black-billed and red-billed) nesting on ... read more
