Left the winelands to head for the coastal road known as the Garden Route - this is because it is green rather than because there are lots of gardens to visit. The roads (Route 62, N2) are really nice to drive, wide lanes, hardly any traffic and good surface, as such we made really quick progress even if we did try and outsmart the Sat Nav and end up doing a U-turn after a shortcut went wrong! Arrived at Haus Am Strand in Wilderness at lunchtime. We have a little studio apartment right on the beach, we can hear the sea crashing from the sofa as we write this blog. We strolled along the beach and saw hundreds of periwinkles in the surf, they are like little green snails that stick their “foot” out of their ... read more

Picked up the car from Avis yesterday- luckily only a 2 minute drag of the bags from the hotel - we got a very cool brand new VW Polo1.4 in dark grey. The driving through Cape Town was good, hardly any traffic and Sat Nav worked well. The drive along the M1 was stunning. About 20 minutes out of town the vineyards and mountains start and didn't stop for the next 2 hours. We drove through a tunnel that must have been several miles long. Arrived in Montagu in the early afternoon, we had a lovely lunch of salad and toasted sarnies, the portions are huge and we are currently eating way too much it is just too darn nice! We've had to switch to diet softdrinks to free up calories for gorging ourselves at meal ... read more

We are in Cape Town in South Africa! It is hot and sunny here and the cold and wet weather of the UK is but a distant memory! We arrived yesterday morning at about 9am. We are staying at a really nice hotel called Rose on Rouge in the Bo-Kaap region of the city. Thankfully they let us check in early so we were able to have a much needed shower and in Tim's case a power nap. However many night flights we take we still have not mastered the technique of sleeping on the plane yet. Bo-Kaap is one of the oldest residential areas of the city and is characterised by really brightly painted Cape Dutch and Georgian architecture. The buildings look really cool and make for a great photo. We spent most of our ... read more

It's my Birthday! Decided to take a day off work and go to London (and being that I took quite a few photos and did a lot I thought I blog about it) We started at HMS Belfast which is somewhere that I have wanted to visit for ages as I have been past it so many times. It is definitely worth a visit as it was really interesting and very well done. It involved going up and down a lot of ladders so it is not a destination for the frail. You could go all over the ship including in the boiler rooms and the shell rooms. It is amazing what things they have on a ship of that size. There was a small hospital/sick bay, dentist, workshop, huge canteen amongst other stuff. There are ... read more

Success! We managed to go cycling. We ended up hiring the bikes through an English company who are based in the Dordogne. This proved to be very useful as they could obviously speak English. We looked like proper cyclists as we had panniers and a map in a special holder. We ended up cycling about 30km and although it was all on the road it was so quiet that we barely saw any cars. We tried to limit the number of times we hummed the 'Allo, 'Allo theme tune as we cycled along.. We ended up climbing quite high (but in a slow gradual way) which meant we got a very long downhill section which was a lot of fun. Friday turned into a very wet day. We had planned to visit some gardens but the ... read more

Tried to go cycling today but failed! It would appear that cycle shops have defined opening times and when it reaches an arbitrary date in September then they all shut. We went into a camp site that had a huge signs saying hire bikes here. We could see the bikes but they said we couldn't hire them. We asked where we could hire them but we just got told that the “la saison est fini, FINI! “ the season has finished! Since when does cycling have a season? Do these people not want to make any money? Maybe George Bush was correct and the French don't have a word for entrepreneur! Having given up on the cycling we decided to visit Sarlat-la-Caneda instead. We got there and got parked without too much trouble. We had been ... read more

Today we headed off in the other direction and into the region known as The Lot. We have driven the road from Les Espioles to Baynac everyday so far so we felt it was time for a change! Our first destination was Rocamadour which is a town that is built into the cliffs. It looks like it is just stuck onto the side of the cliff. At the top there is a château, below that there is a series of chapels and below that there is the main old town. Rocamadour is an important Catholic pilgrimage site, second only to Lourdes, in France. Compared to other places we have been that was not particularly apparent. Considering we are not Catholic we seem to be doing a good job of visiting important Catholic sites. The layout of ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Dordogne September 14th 2009

Just spent two great days exploring the area. It really is pretty here and round every corner there seems to yet another pretty village or town filled with lovely houses. I have lost count of the number of times we have said “There is a nice house, I'd like that one!” Yesterday we went to Domme and then La Roque Gageac. Domme is a village right on the top of a hill so we had great views over the whole area. We could see for miles. The only bad thing about it was Tim's need to use the word Domme to make the tune for F1 racing (Domme, Domme Domme Domme, Domme, Domme, Domme, Domme, Domme...DOMMMMME!) every 5 minutes! The Dordogne seems to be the duck capital of France as every second shop we came across ... read more

Bonjour! We have decided to go away for a week to the Dordogne. We flew to Bergerac with Ryanair (I think it cost more for our bag than it did for us on the return leg!) In terms of views it is one of the best flights I have been on for ages. There were very few clouds about so we had really good visibility. We flew over the Isle of Wight which looked just like it does on google earth (photos to follow when we return home and find the camera cable) Bergerac airport is nice but small. It is currently top of the list for smallest/most basic airport! We have been to a fair few small airports but this one will take some beating. The arrivals area was shed made of corrugated steel. There ... read more

It's Tim Birthday - the big 30! We decided not to let this pass unmarked so we headed off to the Norfolk Broads for the weekend. Considering they are only an hour and a half from Cambridge we don't know why we have never been there before. Vicki and Jo came with us and we hired a 28' cruiser. It was very cool. We weren't too sure what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised. Georgie B (the boat) was fairly spacious and we had a double cabin, kitchen, bathroom and a sitting area with a sofa bed. The whole roof of the living area slid back so we could enjoy the nice weather whilst relaxing. This was just as well as we spent a lot of time relaxing! We had the boat from Saturday morning ... read more
