Today we went on a boat trip to the Farne Islands. Decided to write a single blog entry about this as there are a lot of bird photos (they go onto a second page)! The Farne Islands are one of the reasons that I wanted to come to Northumberland. They are home to a wide variety of sea birds including 70,000 puffins! All the boat trips go from Seahouses and although there are 4 companies running trips there is really nothing to choose between. They all cost the same and leave at about the same time (they stagger the departures by 5 minutes as there is only one space to board the boat). We went for serenity II for no real good reason apart from the fact it had a toilet on board! It takes about ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Northumberland » Seahouses May 24th 2010

As it had been at least a couple of months since our South Africa trip we thought we'd better have another holiday. Volcanic Ash, BA strikes and lots of busy weekends coming up meant we decided to stay in the UK (we will not be using the “word” Staycation) Whilst we drive for 5 or more hours on holiday and think nothing of it we had never even considered going so far in England before - especially northwards! The trip up the A1 was fine and we broke our journey at Wetherby (which we had previously considered about as northerly as you could get) and the Angel of the North. The weather was really good, temperature in the high 20's and we arrived to find the house we'd booked was both really nice and in a ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Simon's Town March 16th 2010

We left Franschhoek yesterday for our last destination, Simon's Town. The roads around Cape Town were far busier than we had seen anywhere. South African drivers don't seem to be a patient lot. They change lanes every 2 seconds if they think that another lane is moving quicker. Earlier in the trip we were stopped on the highway for roadworks. We were only stopped for a minute or 2 but even so people had switched off their engines and were out of their cars trying to find out what the problem was. These people clearly have never been stuck on the M25. Anyway, on the way to Cape Town we stopped at Kirstenbosch which is Cape Town's massive botanical garden. The gardens were lovely and we spent several hours wandering around. Apparently in the spring it ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Franschhoek March 14th 2010

Left the lovely Rothman manor in Swellendam and headed to Franshhoek. Andreas (at Rothman manor) suggested the best route for us to drive in terms of scenery and he wasn't wrong. All the driving here has been enjoyable as the scenery really is stunning. (Should mention that when got in our car to leave we found that it has been washed! We like this level of service) Franshhoek is in one of the wine regions of South Africa and generally regarded as one of the 'foodie' destinations. It certainly didn't disappoint and we ate some fabulous food whilst we were here. One of the great things about South Africa is that it is cheap. We can eat in great restaurants which we could never afford at home for the price of a run of the mill ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Swellendam March 12th 2010

We are living it up in a 5 star delux guest retreat! Arguably we have the smallest (and cheapest!) room. It has its own little eco reserve with two Burchel zebras and some springbok. It also has a hot tub which over looks the eco reserve so we got to sit in it and watch the wildlife, how cool is that? The hotel gardens are lovely. There are several plants that attract the sunbirds so I spent ages watching them flit about. I tried to take a photo but it is no easy task! All of this is in Swellendam which we are visiting so we can go Bontebok national park. Bonteboks are a type of antelope which have been heavily hunted in the past and the world population dropped to 17! The park was set ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Oudtshoorn March 11th 2010

Headed back inland this morning to the Little Karoo region. This is a scrubland area famed for its farming of lamb and Ostriches. It took about an hour and a half to get to Oudtshoorn, the last 30 minutes or so past fields of ostriches. Along the way we saw a sign warning us of tortoises in the road, I told Tim to be careful but just around the next bend he ended up having to slam the brakes on to avoid squishing one which was ambling across the middle of the highway! Oudtshoorn is the Ostrich Capital of the World (although I'm not sure there were that many contenders) and was made rich on the sale of feathers in the 1800's. According to the Ostrich Museum in 1871 a day old Ostrich chick was worth ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Knysna March 9th 2010

To say it is hot here in Kynsna does not even come close to describing it. It reached 40.5 degrees yesterday and even when we are in the shade it is well into the 30's. I have never been so hot in my entire life. It is like being in a furnace. We were not expecting it to be this hot and from what everyone else says neither were they! We are staying in a really great apartment on the quayside. It has its own balcony and mooring for a yacht! There are a lot of very expensive boats parked nearby. Of all the apartments we have stayed in I have one question. “Why no colanders?” How ever well equipped an apartment is - this one has a washing machine, tumble dryer, bread bins and multiple ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Keurboomstrand March 7th 2010

Headed a bit further along the coast today and we are now in Keurboomstrand. It is on a really nice sandy beach. We spent the afternoon walking along the beach, occasionally sticking a toe in the chilly sea and watching the sea snails move along the beach in search of food. We are staying in another self-catering chalet. We don't have ocean views but it is a bargainous 470 Rand (£40) a night. It is massive with a big living/kitchen/dining area. On the way here we stopped at Monkeyland which is a monkey sanctuary. There are around 400 monkeys and it is set in 15 hectares of forest. All the moneys were kept as pets or from zoos so can't be released into the wild. There are no cages at the sanctuary so they are all free ... read more

We are back on the coast and the Garden Route, and are currently in Tsitsikamma National Park. We have got 2 nights in a very cool chalet with ocean views. I am looking out to sea as I write this. I can even see Dassies clambering about on the rocks in front of me! This is the life. We thought we might just melt on the way here as the temperature reached 38.5 degrees!!! It was already 34 degrees by 9am. Thankfully it cooled down considerably to 28 degrees by the time we arrived. Went on a walk this afternoon to a suspension bridge over Storms River and then up to a look out. We did not realise exactly where the look out was, otherwise we would have been put off! It was a lot of ... read more

After a long drive we made it to Addo Elephant Park. This has been the highlight of the trip so far for me, I an never see too many elephants! We are staying in the park in a cabin which turned out to be much posher than we were expecting. It has a balcony over looking the park and the surrounding bushes are constantly filled with tweeting birds (#chirp - Tim says this is a joke for those in the know!) We started off by going on our own game drive, within seconds we'd seen a Buffalo and then several elephants. There are around 400 elephants in the park so we expected to see a few but it was good to see so many, and so close to the road. Game spotting is quite tricky here ... read more
