As it had been at least a couple of months since our South Africa trip we thought we'd better have another holiday. Volcanic Ash, BA strikes and lots of busy weekends coming up meant we decided to stay in the UK (we will not be using the “word” Staycation)
Whilst we drive for 5 or more hours on holiday and think nothing of it we had never even considered going so far in England before - especially northwards! The trip up the A1 was fine and we broke our journey at Wetherby (which we had previously considered about as northerly as you could get) and the Angel of the North.
The weather was really good, temperature in the high 20's and we arrived to find the house we'd booked was both really nice and in a great location. We took a stroll into Seahouses along the coastal path. It is a old fashioned sea side resort with arcades, ice creams and crazy golf. What more could you want?! We started with an ice cream (Tim had a Newcastle Brown ale flavoured one which he claims was lovely) before heading for the beach to look in the rock pools.
The next morning gave us a taster of the range of climates available in an hour here. On the 5 minute stroll to the shops it was icy cold but by the time we were walking back it was warm and half an hour later we were in shorts and throwing a frisbee around on a lovely deserted beach. The beaches here are so nice - sandy, wide and hardly any people around.
In the afternoon we went to Holy Island (Lindesfarne), to get there you drive along a causeway which is underwater for around 5 hours each day. Despite the warnings there are people who risk it and get caught out almost every week. We did a walk around the island, it has a castle, priory and village centre however Tim's favourite thing was a puddle full of leeches! I had open toed sandals so stayed a long way back!
Whilst we were there the sky went very black and we could see a big storm in the distance, we remained dry but when we got back to Seahouses there seemed to have been a cloudburst and we saw lots of drenched people.
Day 3 saw
us head for Bamburgh along the coastal path - this involved about 4 miles each way of walking along the beach. It was a nice walk and we did get some sunshine although it was nowhere near as warm as the weekend. People who holiday in the North are a hardy lot and the slightest ray of sunshine and everyone is eating icecream, sunbathing on the beach and walking around in shorts and T shirts. It wasn't that cold today but it certainly wasn't the weather for shorts and a vest top which I saw several people wearing. Amazingly they didn't even look cold!
The castle is in a stunning location and looks really impressive from the beach. It was interesting and we had a nice lunch. Portions are on the generous size up north, Tim had a Cheese and Potato pie which was served with boiled potatoes and crisps (plus token lettuce leaf), I had an afternoon tea which was advertised as a sandwich, scone and tea but I got a big sandwich, a huge scone with jam and clotted cream on both sides AND 2 big slices of cake! Not even I can eat that much cake
in one sitting!
We walked back, a bit slower than on the way and flopped in front of the tv for the evening.
