18 Birds! at least Some We arrived in Mayaka River State Park after a lovely ride through some of Florida back country. Orange groves with that smell of orange blossoms, cattle ranches and lots of "old Florida". What a refreshing change. It was pleasing to see we had a nice large site quite close to the restrooms with lots of shade. The whole campground is in an old oak forest with the trees towering over us. There are palm trees mixed in and the ground cover is palmetto palms. Pictures. Camp was set up in about an hour and dispite the fact that I was tired Watson really needed a walk so we hiked up the road til there was a glimpse of the lake. We sat on an old tree limb, Watson sits up there ... read more

Blog 03-17-18 Happy St Patrick's Day The morning walk was cut just a little short because I was going to the quilt and small engine show here at the campground and wanted to save my back for a little extra walking. I went to the area with the historic buildings and there was a whole bunch of canopies set up with people milling around all over. There was a section for yard sale items, small engine exhibators and some food items scattered about the grounds. There was even a farmer's market with all kinds of fresh fruits and veggies. I don't know why the people with small engines came and went through all the trouble of setting up their engines, perhaps to just show off what they have accomplished and the toys they have made. blog 03-16-18 Historic Tour We had a later start to the day but got a really good walk in for Watson because I was leaving him while I went on the tour Of the Koreshan Historic Site scheduled for 2 pm. The tour started on time and was run by a volunteer who has been conducting these tours for 15 yrs, she loves it. I was part of a group of about 25, almost all retired snowbirds. We started in the Art Hall where I had been Wed night for the meditation and learned that it was built about 1897 and the grand piano on the stage is an original Steinway, a limited edition at that. Hope they have a security system. The followers, The Koreshan, believe that we live inside the earth and the sun ... read more

blog 03-15-18 Sanibel Island No walk today, Watson is coming with me to Sanibel and there will be enough walking there. We headed out by 11 am and took the scenic route to the Island. It was absolutley beautiful going over several bridges and island hopping, enjoying the colors of the water and the powder white sand beaches. Only one problem, the traffic was horrific. Finally, there was the bridge to Sanibel with a $6.00 toll. Oh well, it will be well worth the price. There are 2 parks on the causway to Sanibel and they looked so inviting especially since they had restrooms. We stopped and after a short delay I took Watson for a walk around the small island. We both needed the stop and the walk and we were finally ready to continue. ... read more

blog 03-14-18 On the River Happy Birthday Pat! After taking Watson on a really long walk we came back to camp where we both relaxed in the sun. I was determined to make it to the river today so after a short time I headed to the boat launch where I inflated my kayak and carefully got on the boat without getting all wet, something of an accomplishmet. The life jacket and water bottle were my only passengers, no camera, cell phone or dog. I headed upstream where the best scenery is supposed to be and found the canopy of vegetation very relaxing. I passed an old plantation style house that is very well kept, then another kayaker appeared, a fellow fishing from his foot paddled boat. From behind I heard a motor noise and there ... read more

blog 03-13-18 Exploring Koreshan State Historic Site On Sunday March 11th I moved from Alafia State Park to Koreshan State Historic Site where I will stay for the next week. The trip was uneventful and we were at our site and settled by 4 pm, not without some sweat. The temperature was 85 with very high humidity so any exertion caused a lot of perspiration. That evening was very warm and in the morning the skys were cloudy with the promise of rain and cooler temperatures. Watson and I had a nice walk before it rained exploring the nature trail and the river. The Estero River runs through the park on it's way to Tampa Bay. You can rent a kayak or canoe and paddle the 4 miles to the bay or paddle upstream and be ... read more

blog 03-10-18 Exploring and Visiting The weather was beautiful, sunny and cooler, about 70, a great day for a walk. Watson and I headed for a trail the ranger told me about that led to a picnic table then a pond and another trail to the river. There are 3 kinds of trails here in the park, equestrian, bike and hiking. There are pens and covered stables for horses and camping sites for your horse trailer. There are 3 in the park now and they are multi use trailers, a regular rv and stalls for 2 horses. Kind of living in a barn. There are miles of horse trails and some people trailer their horses to the park for the day and several times a year they hold equstrian events. There are also miles of bike ... read more

Blog 03-08-18 De Soto National Memorial I missed 2 parks in the St Augusteen area to get my Passport book stamped so I wanted to see what was in this area so any parks here wouldn't be missed. De Soto National Memorial is in Bradenton about an hour from here and as a bonus they allow dogs in the park so I wouldn't have to leave Watson. We left here about 10:30 and drove back roads to Bradenton, then it was city traffic. What a change from being in nature to traffic lights, crazy traffic, hundreds of stores, just crazy busy. Culture shock. De Soto park is along the Manatee River near Tampa Bay and is a small penninsula. When we got there we were immediately back in nature again, a welcome relief. First stop was ... read more

Blog 03-06-18 Enjoying the Park The past 2 days I have been exploring the park and enjoying the sights it provides. It has been very relaxing doing almost nothing but living to the timing of nature. Watson won't let me forget his morning walk or cut it short but it's good for both of us so we smell the smells, listen to the birds and explore new places. I have included pictures of some of the different sights, the beautiful oak trees dripping with spanish moss, the lake and the osprey nests all along the power lines, think I counted 8. The bird traffic gets hectic sometimes with all those new hungry mouths to feed especially with one of the pair having to stay at the nest so it's not raided. This limits the family's food ... read more

blog 02-26-18 to 03-05-18 Catching Up I have gotten so far behind so I'm catching up here. Monday the 26th was moving day and it was so nice having help to pack everything up and hook up the car. I didn't have to get in and out of the car to see if the distance between the 2 was good for attaching the tow bars. We were off and in Clermont by 11:35 am to get a spot next to Ginnie in the Thousand Trails campground. I did get a nice site and we set up and were ready for happy hour early. It was great catching up with Kat, Kim and Ginnie and for dinner we went to a local Italian resturant that has become a favorite. The next morning I took Dee to the ... read more
