blog 03-13-18 Exploring Koreshan State Historic Site
On Sunday March 11th I moved from Alafia State Park to Koreshan State Historic Site where I will stay for the next week. The trip was uneventful and we were at our site and settled by 4 pm, not without some sweat. The temperature was 85 with very high humidity so any exertion caused a lot of perspiration.
That evening was very warm and in the morning the skys were cloudy with the promise of rain and cooler temperatures. Watson and I had a nice walk before it rained exploring the nature trail and the river. The Estero River runs through the park on it's way to Tampa Bay. You can rent a kayak or canoe and paddle the 4 miles to the bay or paddle upstream and be embraced by the canapy formed by the jungle. It's on my plan of things to do.
I left Watson to go to the laundromat 2 miles up the road but was told to come back later, they had every machine busy with a stock pile waiting. Oh well, it is Monday morning. I did some grocery shopping and returned to rest up
for the afternoon shift at the laundry.
That did happen about 3 and was home again by 4:30. Another walk and I made dinner and retired for the night.
Tuesday morning was cool 45 degrees, and it was a very refreshing change from the day before. Watson and I went for a nice nature walk along the river and watched a family load themselves in a canoe without getting wet. Miracles do happen. The dad was very nervous, insisting ALL had their life jackets on and with great courage shoved off and up river they went. Hope he didn't know that there are alligators along the way.
When we got back to camp I made and packed lunch to take to the doggie beach. I had promised Watson a fun trip today so off we went with the help of google maps. It was a half hour trip into Bonita Springs then up to Ft Myers over a bridge and we were there. The trail led to a mangrove forest with several trails leading to small beaches occupied by people with their dogs of various sizes. I walked along til I found a beach with several small
or medium dogs and thought it would be safe there. After a short time of dogs smelling and saying hi I was brave enough to take Watson off his leash. He ran up and down the beach with a couple of dogs then we played catch for a short time til his attention went to another dog.
That dog ran into the water with Watson in hot pursuit, he never did realize or mind that he was getting wet. He even retrieved a stick from the water with no hesitation at all. Then of course, it was time to roll in the sand. Picture. Didn't he remember he just had a bath 2 days ago!
We stayed at the park for almost 2 hrs then headed home. It was a beautiful day and many people were out at these sand bars with their boats parked and enjoying the sun.
We came home and I had every intention of launching my kayak in the river but it never happened. I sat in the sun in my lounge chair, read my book, talked on the phone til it was too cool for me to hit the water.
I
had started the crock pot this morning so dinner was ready whenever I was.
It is going to be a cool night tonight, makes for good sleeping.
