Teoday was always going to be a difficult day . I couldn't sleep last night. I was awake at 2.40 fumbling round for the light to see what time it was. It was too hot to sleep and sleep ended up fitful all night . But then it would have today . I never sleep well thinking I have to get up for the train in the morning . Always afraid of oversleeping I tend to stay awake thinking. It was a moonlit night and the light was shining in through the blinds . It should have been shining in through Gabbys blinds as we slept the last sleep of our Spring holiday . When I did wake all I could do was look at my watch and think where would I be now . Eating ... read more

Day 70 - The sun was shining in through the windows this morning. We are into the last few days of May. The Works of Fiction the forecasters got most of Mays weather correct . It has been the hottest Spring and the hottest May for years. Sitting out in the sun has become the norm. Walking has to be done early before the sun comes up. It is Saturday morning and June the first day of meteorological Summer is just a few days away. The next few days will remain warm. By mid -week the threat is for cooler weather . Life is still running along at a very odd pace . House Bingo has now replaced I Spy . Today I need to find house number 70. I thought the best place to find ... read more

Is it too much to go to bed every night and hope that tomorrow things will be different ? Is it too much to wake up in the morning and hope that they have changed . Things are changing little by little . Too fast for some . Far too slow for others . I am in the middle . Sometimes sitting on the fence wondering how I would approach lifting lockdown. I tell myself no-one is paying me to enough to put this situation to right but I wish someone would get a grip. 69 days ago feels like a lifetime away. We would have been almost at the tunnel today at Coquelles. Our Scandavian holiday would be over and we probably would have been craving for beans on toast, a bath - a long ... read more

Day 68 - another day of semi -lockdown . Test and Protect has started in Scotland . Track and Trace has started in England . Will that work ? Somehow we doubt it . Walking round a supermarket who have I been next to? I will not know them. How can I tell the NHS who I walked by, who I stood by, their names, their addresses and their phone numbers . It feels an ill thought out scheme . Premier League Football will be starting up again in a few weeks . After yesterdays news on closed dentists it seems they are opening on the 8th June . On the balance of probabilities do I believe any word that comes out of BoJos mouth ? No I don't especially when he brushes off questions when ... read more

Day 67 - When I started walking on Day 1 I set off on a lonely road . A road that I did not think would take this long to travel . I had a plan to walk the entire village . I wanted to find interesting things and for the first few months I did walk new road , found new things and enjoyed the walking. At the end of March I walked to the sound of the morning chorus and the growth of all those Spring flowers . I made up my mind to look for interesting house names , interesting house numbers and milestones . I looked out for flowers as they came out. Mostly my walks were lonely ones as I set out early . But I liked it like that . ... read more

Day 67 That was the week that was . I wonder what the panel of this show would make of the last week. Then there is Private Eye and Have I got news to you. The satirists would have had a field day over the last few days. It was gone 7am when I pulled myself out of bed. As each day passes by it feels increasingly hard to force myself out of bed. I might only be 10 mins later getting up or even half an hour but waking does feel different the later I set out. As I looked out of the window a dog walker stopped outside our house . He reminded me of a scene in France when the frenchman gets out of his car and wees up against the nearest tree. ... read more

Day 66 or clickety click as they say in the bingo halls . It is Monday and a bank holiday . It feels no different to any other day . When you are partially retired the week has a totally different meaning and feel. 66 days since March. That is 1584 hours of my life that has disappeared and I won't get them back . 1584 hours of travel . Of seeing new places . 66 days don't mean as much when you are younger but as you get older you value every day more . Every day when you don't achieve something feels a day wasted . And all hours wasted . And so many minutes and seconds gone . Dripped away slowly like grains of sand . We overlay this morning. No reason to ... read more

"You must understand the whole of life not just a little part of it " so said Jiddu Krishnamurti . At the moment I don't understand most of it let along the whole of it. Covid 19 has made us all that way. We understand nothing much these days. I fell asleep last night thinking about motorhoming . It is a little over 8 years since we bought our first van and what adventures we have had since then. Apparently there are around 225,000 motorhomes and campervans in our small country . Add rather a lot more caravans and there are a lot of us probably feeling tied down and missing our vans. Motorhoming has become a lot more popular here over the years and we all will be looking for places to go once our ... read more

Someone once told me the story of the escape tunnel . A colleague at work was partially retired . He had about two years to go and had purchased a new car with a credit agreement . His plan was to work for the two years and the wages would pay the debt off . He likened it to being in a prison and digging his way out. He dug a little closer to the retirement date every day and every week. He had the dates written down and crossed the days off as they passed. 2 years he said and that time will pass quickly . I used to laugh at him . Two years was a long time . However he was right . In the end the two years did pass. He paid ... read more

Two things came to mind today as I walked . On my own today. After all the exertion of walking yesterday Sion has decided not to join me . Walking though is perhaps the wrong word . He really did get carried round and yes he did fall asleep. He reminded me about castrated fish and the fact that I had to tell the story . It appears that the local gentry and more particularly one of Hunloke went off to Italy . Grand tour or not he found himself eating the finest fish he had ever tasted . He asked why it tasted so good and was told that the key was to castrate the fish . Castrated fish apparently and I cannot profess to having eaten castrated fish tastes so much better . Castrated ... read more
