Morning all - I guess you will all be up and greeting the dawn . Sleep did not come easy last night . Tossing and turning . You get nights like that at times . Hoping that once your head hits the pillow you will fall asleep . Some nights you do. Others the ticking of the clock gives you clues to the fact the hours are passing and you are still not asleep. All that walking . All that fresh air. I should hit the pillow and be asleep in seconds . But not last night . I don't know why . My mind seemed to be racing . What shall I do tomorrow ? It is week 5 of the lockdown. Many jobs have been completed and like the painting of the Forth Road ... read more

It is Sunday. The shine is shining . It is a day of rest . But each day feels like a day of rest . Everyday feels like a Sunday. I could turn over , fall asleep and have a late breakfast . Somehow along the way , over the last 30 days walking has become an obsession . Much as I want to return to sleep the sun shining in beckons me on. It does not take long to make that cup of tea . Make a full English for the driver. Poke my nose out and make the decision. Decisions . Decisions . Coat on . Coat off. Coat on . It is coat off . As long as I walk in the sun I will be fine . The sky is bluer than ... read more

"Are you getting up?" The navigator woke early this morning . I never heard him getting up . He was standing at the bottom of the bed " What about your walk?" " Are you bothering this morning ?" I had made plans yesterday for todays walk . On the way home I passed a man walking his dog . He started to disappear into a gap which appeared to head off into the woods. I had seen the path before but had no idea where it led to. " Morning " I said to him . "Where are you walking to?" He explained it went through the wood , around the field and came out at the bus turning area where I had just come from . Profoundly thanking him he had given me todays ... read more

The brain this morning does not want to function . One side is saying get up , get moving , get out . The other side replies in a negative fashion . Let me stay in bed a bit longer. My foot aches . Underneath and on top. Shoes are rubbing toes from so much walking . To top it all brain says calves and hamstrings are aching . Lie in bed. Give in . There is always tomorrow . But then t'other side chips in but that is wasting 24 hours . Get up you lazy thing . Plan your day . Do something constructive . Strange to have a strong voice in your head saying Dont bother moving . Lie in , get up late but the other stronger side is motivating. Its voice ... read more

Snuggling up inside the duvet it was hard to make the decision to wake up fully and rise . The sun was slowly rising above the trees . There was a hint of a chilly morning out of the sun . Walking early is a pleasure before the rest of the world has woken . Over a morning panad (the Welsh word for a cup of tea) I mulled over where to go . What direction should I take ? Head into the sun seemed a good decision . With gilet on, nose was poked out of the back door and the air sniffed and tested . It felt cold . There were signs of a slight overnight frost . The tips of the grass were silver . The car roof was glinting in the sunlight ... read more

Sometimes you have to try something different . Chesterfield area is not all Peak District pretty . Nor is full to the brim with pretty stone cottages . Stone walls, fields and Bluebell Woods . There is another side . The A61 divides the two halves . The Peak District side where it only takes minutes to walk from our village into the countryside . The other side was highly industrialised . The Avenue - once the main entrance to Wingerworth Hall became the most polluted site in Europe . This 240 acre brownfield site once housed coking works and has been cleaned up ready for redevelopment . It took 15 years to clear the solil and decontaminate it before planning permission was given for 469 properties . That number of properties mean another 1000 inhabitants ... read more

I take a sharp intake of breath as I test what the air temperature is outside . The chill of the frosty night has not yet been burned away that frosty morning feeling. My breath comes out like a thick wisp of smoke. I need my gilet on today to keep me warm today . I need my gloves as my fingers feel icy to the touch. And my silk scarf around my neck . It will be warm by mid morning but mid morning feels a long way away. I look both forward to the walk wherever the path leads me but equally I look forward to getting home. To wrap my cold fingers around a hot steaming mug of coffee. I know when I get home I will have plans formulated for the day ... read more

I love walking on my own. It is never a lonely experience. There is too much to see and too much to take in . Even on Day 24 of the lockdown I am still finding nooks and a cranny or two in our village that I have never investigated before . Yes I am covering the same ground sometimes but there are still footpaths I have not explored . There are still the squirrels who delight me as they cross my path; the owner training his gundog . A young puppy who will stay until told to run but then gets distracted by me walking close by . She comes to play with me. Our village is large 10 thousand live here . It feels more like a small town than a village having grown ... read more

Day 23 - Gabby the motorhome is still on furlough . We keep checking on her . To make sure she is Ok . That she is not missing us as much as we are missing her. Walking makes you stop and think . Instead of a mind racing on "important " things it goes into slow motion . For the first time in years I have found myself stopping and staring . I notice the dainty delicate Sweet Violets hiding in the undergrowth . I would have walked past them a few weeks ago . I pass a small chapel and see the signs inviting a congregation in . Sadly today there wont be a congregation celebrating Easter inside . It makes me think of childhood and Good Fridays in 1960's Britain . Our tiny ... read more

My virtual trip has taken me to Denmark . Another country added to the list and another magnet purchased for the board in the kitchen . So thoughts on Denmark . I wonder what the roads will be like. Will they resemble the de dum de dum roads of Belgium or the straight as a die roads of Germany ? I imagine a very flat country. A country of pigs, bacon and more pigs. There is more to Denmark than pigs and lovely bacon. Considered to be one of the most economically and socially developed countries. It has a very high standard of living and welfare state. It may be expensive but we have a pocketful of Danish krone to spend . Will we find it too expensive ? You only live once so spend we ... read more
