86,400 - That is a large number . It is a number you never think about . At the start of the day, as you wake you don't give a thought to so many figures . I never did. That was until I read something that told me how many seconds there were in a day . Give or take a few as it is not precise it comes to somewhere around 86,000. That is a lot of seconds . I have never considered a day in such a way. Those 86,000 seconds slip through our fingers like grains of sand . Once they have gone then we cannot get them back . Each day 86,000 seconds can be used wisely or wasted . No-one will give us the ones left over today . We won't ... read more

Gabby the virtual motorhome is on her virtual tour having now reached the lovely Lubeck . Lubeck was one of those places we first saw and read about in blogs. Other peoples blogs. Stories of parking up and wandering through its quaint walls into its equally quaint interior . We always put this northern German city on our must do and must see tour in Gabby. Going to Denmark meant Lübeck with its brick Gothic architecture could be seen on the way to Denmark or on the way back . A city that was once the medieval capital of the Hanseatic League, a powerful trading confederation. Its symbol is the Holstentor, a red-brick city gate that defended the river-bounded Altstadt (old town). It was probably this gateway that defined our ideas about visiting the city . ... read more

Here we are on a road between the Waddenzee which I can see to my left and the Ijsselmeer to my right . These Dutch certainly know how to control the sea .We have tried in the past in Norfolk where the land lies low . We did not do a bad job emulating the Dutch . But we have nothing to compare with what they did to become masters of the sea. We are riding along in Gabby along the A7 otherwise known as the E22. I am here but only in my dreams . Only in my virtual Spring trip. It would be so inviting to see the sea. It may be grey and dismal but there is still something wonderful watching and listening to the waves lapping on a shoreline. Being in the ... read more

After a touch of frost last night the sun finally came out . You feel so much better when the sun shines don't you? Well if you don't you should. Sunshine makes all the difference to a day. My walk took me along roads many times travelled . Crossing the road from sunlight to shade . . Was it my imagination or were there more vehicles on the road today? Surely they were not all key workers? The man in his big 4 x 4 in his open collared shirt . The six large lorries that were heading to the building site just up the road. The construction worker sitting on a plastic chair guiding them in . He looked like an Italian prositute that we often see touting for trade around Bologna. Stories abound about ... read more

Today was a day of Could have, Should have and Would have. We should have risen from our beds at 6.15 this morning . We would have eaten our breakfasts and set out for a trip to North Wales . I could have been driving through the pretty town of Bakewell on my way to the hairdressers . Bakewell is a town bustling with life . Buzzing in the Spring and Summer as visitors teem through the streets. Buying up the Bakewell Tarts or Puddings . Bakewell memories take me back to the 1970's - a TV programme that came on weekly . Treasure Hunt based on a french show La Chasse au Tresor aired the first time round between 1982 and 1989 . The lovely Anneka Rice in her lycra suits boarded a helicopter. She ... read more

Dawn broke and I woke. I lay in bed for a while . It is Sunday after all. Nothing much to get up for . How many days have we been socially distancing for ? I count 5 days on the fingers of my left hand . I move to the right hand and count another 5. Back to the left hand, one , two three , four and five more . Over to the right hand for the second time round . That is 16 days . I feel I must have miscounted . I am slowly losing track of the days . No swimming today . Just got to get up and make breakfast before going for the morning walk . It is a lovely day and it is Palm Sunday. I set out ... read more

Yes it is Chesterfield again . I am in my little world , my own little bubble in and around the village where I live . I would walk 5000 miles if I could . If feels as if I have walked 5000 recently as I pound round the estate day after day . Why did we choose a bungalow at the top of a hill? It is pay back time now as my walks take me up hill all the time with very little flat land to walk on. That was one of the reasons we wanted to move . To find somewhere nearer to civilisation and shops . To be on the flat so walking would not be quite so irksome. Now if I were losing weight then the hills would be a bonus ... read more

Day 13 and Day 14 of the lockdown - I am running out of places to go and walking spots . My brain is lacking ideas of what to write . Who would have thought that I would find it so hard? As I walk I try to just feel thankful I can walk somewhere into open countryside . . I look about me to try to see something new . This lockdown is dragging on and on and we feel very unlucky. Should we though feel lucky ? We are able to stand still and listen to the silence . We feel as if we have been taken back to a much more peaceful and less rushed time. The absence of vehicles on the road is a bonus. Mother Earth might just be able to ... read more

Day 12 - Lockdown still continues . I broke it this morning . I made the decision to do the shopping first , come home , have a coffee and cake and then set out for the morning walk. It was good to be back in the car even if the drive was only 3 miles down the road. What happened next though was not what I expected . The supermarket looked fairly empty. As I walked across I realised that it was closed . The shutters were down. I could see the staff inside and caught their eye. "What time do you open?" 8am. As it was 6.45 I had two choices. Go home have the coffee and try again later or go for my walk now. In the end it was home and cake ... read more

Day 11 - Although I love walking I am increasingly finding it harder to find somewhere new to walk. The same old routes. I pound the same old streets . I look at the same old houses. I try to find ways to make the walk interesting. I look into peoples gardens to see what is growing. I look at the houses . Many pre- 1950 are interesting. Built with love and a care to attention. They are individual, in larger than life plots and in keeping with the area. The 1970's semi detached . All looking the same. The same brick . The same design set in smaller gardens . We had one . Our first house. We were grateful for it . No tarmacced drive in those days . We were lucky to get ... read more
