Rain - it can be quite therapeutic . When it patters on Gabbys roof it can lull you into sleep . When it hammers down it is worse than listening to Ginger Baker and Keith Moon on their drumkits on the roof. It does the garden good . But lying in bed listening to it keeps me awake . I guess my mind is all over the place . Even though we are not heading to Canterbury after work I cannot stop wondering if I have locked the windows . Are the plants Ok to be left until we return? Have I put enough clothes to wear in Gabbys lockers ? I know I won't be going on holiday but the ritual of making sure everything is ready is a ritual hard to break . Eventually ... read more

It was not the aching feet that were stopping me in my tracks . To be fair they were burning . This walking plays havoc with the arches of your feet . It was not my brain working overtime thinking of reasons not to go out . Although it would have been easy not to get up and just laze the day away . Ming -Dao- Deng suggested to me this morning that "Every day passes whether I participate in it or not". So I could waste the day doing nothing or get up and make the most of it . As you get older each day becomes more precious. It was the sound of that rain that had hammered down all through the night that was putting me off moving .. The washing left out ... read more

"Is that rain I hear ?" Gently tapping on the window . I cannot hear anything as I lie under the bedclothes . "I am sure it is raining ." The work of fiction the weather forecaster got it right . April is going out in the way April should go out . Light rain showers . I get out of bed , look out of the window and sure enough the ground is wet . It has been raining . Not enough to force me back to bed yet . The ground is darkened by the rain splats . Time to make a brew and see what happens next . If it pours down it will stop me walking . I think a silent thought . Please stop raining - just long enough for a ... read more

Shall I let you into a little secret ? oh go on then . I am quite enjoying this walking . Lying in bed unable to drop off to sleep I sorted out in my mind where I was walking to in the morning . The weather whas a let down . Over the past few weeks someone told me that the clouds were social distancing too. The lovely weather had made this inprisonment bearable . But then late yesterday afternoon the clouds arrived broke and the heavens opened . The April showers had arrived with a vengeance . Good for the potatoes , the carrots, the peas and beans but a river running down the hill meant no sitting out. A wet and damp walk in the morning . By morning the rain had ceased ... read more

Thankyou to my travelblog friend (you know who you are ) for introducing the colour Borage Blue to my collection of colours . She told me that the plant I struggled finding a name for yesterday was Borage . An electric blue and a stunning plant . Another weekend has come around . Is it now 35 days of lockdown? . I have to count on my fingers No its 37 I think . I have lost track. Each day feels like a Sunday in the 1950's and 60's . I am truly bored with my walk this morning . I have almost exhausted the pathways. I skirt the village the other way round just to vary the feel of the walk . The government are talking of using a phone app to track Covid 19 ... read more

The work of fiction known as the weather forecast has been giving us a sandwich message the last few days. The good news - the bread of the sandwich has been that April has been a lovely month . No April showers. Wall to wall sunshine. Then came the filling of the sandwich - tomorrow the weather will change . It will feel cooler . It may rain. Not what you want to hear on Day 35 of the lockdown. The thought of rain keeping us indoors fills us with horror. I woke up to what they said I would wake up to. The sun was not shining in through the window . The central heating was running. I could have quite easily have turned over and gone back to sleep . Funny how walking always ... read more

Yesterday it was horses, birds, coots on the pond, rabbits and squirrels . Today chickens. Guinea Fowl - a bit of an odd sight around the village as they walked alongside me. My plan was to head out into the countryside . Luckily living on the spine of England we can find walks and I still keep finding them. Today it was going to be Top, Middle and Bottom or so that was the plan. A look at a map last night showed three paths with many footpaths running from them. So much I could lose myself for a week . The hatched plan consisted of just reconnoitring the area. I knew it was going to be uphill and planned with military precision a route to the top of Top Road . I had little idea ... read more

The early morning dawn light was streaming in through the window . The time seemed irrelevant . It was still not quite light enough to rise . Looking at my watch I hoped the green luminous fingers would give me a clue to the time . It felt like 5am. The fingers went round but they were not luminous enough for me to work out what time it was . Sleep had come easily last night . Perhaps that last bit of fresh night air. Sitting outside on a bench watching the night sky. Venus as bright as ever . A satelitte passed over north to south . I waited in anticipation of the 41 satelittes that would travel the night sky above me . I think I saw 5 but I could never be sure ... read more

I won't lie to you. My brain was Ok this morning - accepting the fact that a walk was on the way after breakfast . It also knew that today was shopping day . The day of a telekit from work. It was my feet that were complaining . Complaining loudly at that . It was an effort to force them out of bed and out into the car to head off for the combined early morning walk and shop. Ziggy the car has only been out 5 times during the lockdown. Four for shopping and one trip out to pick up cement . It was a strange experience starting her up and listening to her growling engine. A strange experience heading for my walk . I promised I wouldn't lie . The pictures on the ... read more

"The butterfly counts not months but moments and has time enough" Rabindranath Tagore - one of my favourites. I saw the first butterfly of the season today . A Cabbage White - the scourge of gardeners who love their cabbages . The pretty white things lays so many eggs on the leaves that the cabbages are beyond redemption. My walk today would be the other way round the allotments. Before leaving whilst pondering where to go and how long it would take I came up with an hour to walk the reverse route which would be uphill most of the way . I would be back by 8.05 I thought . Watches synchronised it time to set off . Across the park . An ambulance was parked up outside a bungalow . I wondered if Covid ... read more
